It was a pleasant evening in IceClan - though chilly, there was no wind and the air smelled nice. Maplefrost probably would've been stargazing if he could see. Instead, the elder was laying outside his den and listening silently to the chatter of his Clanmates as they returned from patrols and grabbed their shares from the fresh-kill pile.
The calico cat twitched his ears upon hearing pawsteps nearby. "Hello."

Maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ Quillfoot had returned to Iceclan chilly and miserable. The weather itself was common in his snowy home, but with half a body's worth of fur missing, it was harder for the warrior to deal with it then most. Still, he suffered silently and made do with his internal complaints. No point drawing even more attention to himself.
The hungry warrior picked a rabbit off the fresh-kill pile absently, wondering how close his clanmates would have been to Fireclan to have caught it. Eager for company, yet averse to the rambunctious warriors his own age, the burned tabby found kindship in the sight of one of the clan's elders, and hurried over eagerly. "Mind if I sit? I'd be happy to share, if you'll take it as payment."

After some vigorous sniffing of the air, Maplefrost nodded. Rabbit wasn't his absolute favorite prey… but that didn't mean he wasn't happy to have it. Food was food. "Sure," purred the old Maine Coon. He twitched his tail to one side, indicating the free space nearby.
"You're… hmm. Skyfire?" he guessed, knowing the tom's scent was familiar but not being able to use Quillfoot's appearance for help with his memory.

Maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ Quillfoot smiled and dropped the rabbit, letting the last of his nerves fade to a simmering level. Some days it seemed he was never rid of his self-conscious nature. With a grateful purr he settled down in the offered spot.
The mottled tom laughed, absently pushing the rabbit closer to Maplefrost. "Close, you got the 'fire' right, anyway. I'm Quillfoot." There'd been rumors about the colored tom's loss of sight, and now it appeared they were true. "I was blind for a moon once, and you're handling it much better than I ever did. That's pretty admirable." Quillfoot was able to find things to admire in everyone but himself. It was actually a hobby.

He chuckled for a moment at the other tom's somewhat-morbid joke. Maplefrost had seen Quill's injuries before; they'd always looked rather painful. He wondered whether his fur would ever grow back. Or perhaps it already was? Well, no way to know for sure.
"Good to hear from you again, Quillfoot. I knew I remembered your voice from somewhere." The elder nodded to himself before continuing. "Honestly, the whole ordeal is probably made easier by the fact that Hawkbreeze took half of my sight several seasons ago. It's just recently that my other eye decided to stop working. Not sure why. Age, maybe?" He casually reached out a paw to locate the hare, and dragged it closer to take a bite.

Maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ He was glad the calico had remembered him at all. It seemed like something similar to an honor. "You as well, my friend. It's certainly been a while." After the death of his mother, and then Bramblethorn's disappearance, Quillfoot had become something of a recluse. He didn't actually enjoy it, and he was truthfully annoyed with himself because of it. Unfortunately the only way to help himself was to talk to others, and that wasn't something he excelled at.
"I suppose that would help you adjust," Quillfoot agreed thoughtfully. His expression was quickly taken over by a wicked smirk. "Though if I suddenly lost the other half of my fur, I doubt I'd adjust to that without trouble. Can you imagine? A hairless cat in Iceclan." He'd die off pretty quickly, he imagined with a morbid roll of his eyes. Luckily, he didn't plan to leap into any more fires for some time.

"I wouldn't recommend going completely furless here. You'd freeze like the river in leaf-bare," he commented after swallowing the bite of meat. "Though I have heard that some cats are born without a pelt. Guess I'm not surprised that they don't live in the mountains. It must be hard." Maplefrost continued to munch for several moments, then he spoke again.
"Have you had any apprentices recently? Retirement is so dull that I've found myself wanting to teach a youngster again."

Maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ "Now that would be an interesting sight." The young tom laughed, leaning forward to snag a bite of the rabbit. He'd been polite enough to allow Maplefrost first go, but he'd been working all day and he was hungry. "There was one in Fireclan I met. An odd little she-cat. I suppose cats like that can't live anywhere but in a place that spontaneously bursts into flames." His voice was dry and somewhat sardonic, laced with his own memories of fire and Fireclan.
Quillfoot's expression quickly turned bashful. "Actually, I've never had an apprentice." Here he was in the prime of his life, avoiding his duties, when Maplefrost was ten times the warrior he was and missing out. His chest felt hollow with guilt at the thought.

"You know, I'm convinced that Darkstar is already a member of CloudClan, but she's somehow stayed in her ancient body. Since spirits can do all sorts of things, like shoot lightning, it all makes sense. Although doing it in a place where one small fire can end up burning down the entire territory probably isn't wise…"
He trailed off and blinked his sightless eyes in surprise at Quillfoot's confession. "Really? You should talk to Dustpetal; she can probably set you up with one. It's a lot of work - but it can be fun and rewarding, too."

maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ Quillfoot chuckle, tail flicking in amusement. "From what I've seen of her, I'd believe it. I think the only reason she let me stay there was because she was planning some kind of ritual sacrifice for me." He was joking of course, but there was a part of him that was afraid it was true. The black leader was a megalomaniac at best.
"You think?" He questioned, somewhat reluctantly looking at the elder. "I'm not exactly a flashy warrior, or a great one. I'm sure I'd be a disappointing mentor to any apprentice."

"Sounds about right. Darkstar is a sick and twisted cat," shrugged Maplefrost. "There was that one time she kept me as a hostage for several moons. It wasn't very fun."
He took another bite of the hare, then sat back to let Quillfoot have the rest. "You don't need to out on a show for apprentices. Just show them what you know; I'm sure it'd be fine."

maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ The mottled warrior hummed in agreement, stretching out his paws to tug the rabbit a little closer to himself. "Seems like strange leaders are a running theme," he noted, rolling his eyes. Darkstar was loony, Wildstar was practically nonexistent, and he doubted the other clans were much better. Or at least he hoped so. It would have been a nice coincidence.
Quillfoot was still fidgeting nervously, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't know....I don't seem like the kind of person that has a lot to offer. I mean, compared to you and all of the other cats who have much more experience."

| Oops, forgot about this. |
The elder quirked a catlike eyebrow at Quillfoot's nervousness. "I suppose we'll have to disagree on that subject. Some cats get apprentices only moments after they become warriors. I was one of those - and I don't think Dapplepool turned out too terribly," he meowed with a small shrug. IceClan did need mentors, and the younger tom seemed capable enough...

Maplefrost | ◀ | nothing burns like cold ❤ He certainly couldn't argue with the logic Maplefrost presented. With a slightly submissive bow of his head, Quillfoot gave an allowing smile. "I suppose there's only one way to find out," he added with a slight chuckle. So he'd volunteer for an apprentice. Funny how Maplefrost could change his mind so easily. Though, Quillfoot was easy like that. "Thank you for pushing me, Maplefrost. I'm kind of pathetic like that."

He purred quietly at this, taking a moment to raise a paw and lap at it before speaking again. "No problem. The Clan does need more mentors - we seem to have a steady flow of new apprentices these days. Isn't it strange? There's times when we don't have a single kit in the nursery for moons, and I hadn't expected leaf-bare to be the opposite." The queens were still a bit of a mystery to Maplefrost. He couldn't hope to understand how they managed the nursery so well, for one - CloudClan knew that kittens would be running amok if he was in charge.
