Spiderleaf was in the main clearing, pawing a ball of moss between her paws thoughtfully. Hanging around kits all day sometimes annoyed her, but sometimes it also made her playful. With a smirk she hooked the ball and tossed it at the nearest figure she could see. "Catch!" She demanded with a musical laugh. THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

'Catch!' Crevicepaw zipped her head to find whoever was calling out such a demand to find a ball of moss flying passed her. What was going on? Someone was in a playful mood and the apprentice jumped up and down in circles around the moss ball, picking it up. She then saw that it was the well renowned queen, Spiderleaf, who was the victim of such a crime. "Hi mom!" she squeaked, barely believing her eyes. "Oh right, the moss ball!" The Turkish Angora then threw the ball back to the queen in hopes for a game.

"Crevicepaw!" Spiderleaf purred as she recognized her daughter. It had been a long time since she'd seen any of her children, and it looked like Crevicepaw had grown a lot since their time in the nursery together. "How have you been?" She asked, catching the mossball in her claws.
With a brief laugh she flicked it back towards the apprentice.

Crevicepaw gave a large grin when she heard her mother calling out her name. Spiderleaf's approval was everything to her. "I'm great! Cloverstar's the best mentor ever, and I keep wondering when I'll get my warrior ceremony, but I don't mind always being Crevicepaw! There's always so much to learn and even though I think I'm ready to be a warrior, I feel like I'm not the same time!" Crevicepaw then stopped her monologue, realizing that what she was saying was like a rapid fire answer and finally breathed. "Sorry! It's just I haven't seen you in a while." The apprentice dipped her head and then hit the mossball back to the queen with her thick tail. "How have you been?"

It always made her proud when her kits excelled at training; and that Cloverstar herself was mentoring Crevicepaw made it even more special. "I'm sure you'll make a great warrior, when the time comes. I felt the same way when I was an apprentice. Trust Cloverstar, she'll know when you're ready." Spiderleaf's mind flickered back to her own days as a warrior, however short they were, and she smiled. Yes, she was certain Crevicepaw would make a fine warrior; especially if sh kept her joyful spirit alive.
Spiderleaf swung and let the mossball bounce into her flank, before scooping it up with a paw. "It has been far too long." And since Crevicepaw was her only kit that actually visited her, Spiderleaf had missed her even more. "I've been well, the nursery is as quiet as ever. I think I may actually die of boredom soon." With a chuckle she threw the ball back at Crevicepaw. THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

'I'm sure you'll make a great warrior, when the time comes. I felt the same way when I was an apprentice. Trust Cloverstar, she'll know when you're ready.' Once again, words of wisdom from her mother. Sometimes, Crevicepaw wondered how it would be if Spiderleaf was not a queen, but rather a warrior. ' She'd make a great mentor.' But then again, her mother's task already required that mentoring personality - optimism and friendliness. Once the ball returned to her, she was hearing her mother's last statement, an emphasis on the dying portion. "You can't die of boredom mom!" she gasped. "You just have to - " she began to unintentionally claw the moss trying to find her words. "Why not ask Cloverstar for a break and try the life of a warrior for a while?" In other words, it would have been cool to have more time to bond with her mother over a hunt or patrol.
spicing it up by having the moss shred up a bit. xD ✿

Spiderleaf's face broke into a grin as Crevicepaw all but read her mind. There were some days when she truly missed being a warrior. It had been tolerable until she'd been reunited with Robbie, and then remnants of her old life began to reemerge. "I might just do that. Imagine how that will be, working as warriors together."
She felt a tingle of doubt that Cloverstar would allow her to do such a thing. There was no harm in trying though. The black and white she-cat tired to catch the mossball, but after Crevicepaw's ministrations there wasn't much less to catch. Instead she chuckled and pushed it towards her daughter. "Do you have any friends your own age, Crevicepaw? Any cute boys?" Her mother asked with a teasing purr. THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

Once Spiderleaf nudged the spoiled mossball towards her, the apprentice gave it a sniff. Whoops, she must have over done it. "Everyone's my friend!" she teased, aware that half the clan was in fact, annoyed of her. "There is a certain tom. . ." she mewed, trying to casually mention her non-Rockclan friend. What would her mother think?

Spiderleaf laughed, encouraged by Crevicepaw's cheer. So everyone was her friend? It was easy to care for everyone around, she knew that well enough. But there had to be someone special in her life that could receive even more than just basic friendship; otherwise she could be left loving everyone, and no one at the same time. Spiderleaf herself had been reduced to as much, when everyone around her was loved an equal amount. It was a nice sentiment, but having no one special left you nothing but hollow.
"Oh, do I know him?" She asked, instantly curious, thanks to her prior thoughts. "He must be special, if you're making a special note of him." THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

Crevicepaw giggled at Spiderleaf's laugh, now wishing that she spent more time bonding with her mother during her kitten days. A shame how she wanted to grow up so quickly. Her ears dipped when she was questioned about her friend. "Probably not!" she chirped. "He's from another clan, so I only see him when Cloverstar lets me get into the Gatherings." Now she was curious of her own mother's love life. "Is there a certain tom for you?" The apprentice playfully nudged herself against the queen's shoulder.

Spiderleaf's blood chilled when Crevicepaw spoke of the tom from another clan. She relaxed a little when the gatherings were mentioned, but inside she was still tense. Did Crevicepaw take after her mother so much that she was destined to find love in another clan? It wasn't a fate that she would ever wish upon her daughter. Though she tried not to fear. It sounded like they were just friends anyhow, and Crevicepaw was much too young to be worried about love.
"You know queens can't take mates," Spiderleaf replied, effectively dodging the question. She nudged Crevicepaw's shoulder in return and sighed. "If you track our family history, you'll find it hasn't gone wonderfully in the love department." THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

She blinked. Surely Spiderleaf had a lover before becoming a queen? Her first litter should have been with someone that she loved, right? "Did you have a mate when you were a warrior?" Crevicepaw knew the question was something that was in the queen's long history, but hopefully there would be a more definite response. Redfern. . . that was really the only name the apprentice could recall of her family tree. She'd never met her grandmother, but she wanted to know about her. "What happened with Redfern's love life?"

She was trying to humor Crevicepaw, whose romantic ideals of love seemed much fresher than Spiderleaf's own past ordeals. There was not a single part of her that wanted to ruin that for her daughter, so she kept her smile in place. "I was in love, once," she merely answered with a smile. "But I never took a mate, no."
She almost snorted at Crevicepaw's question. "Oh, there are not enough minutes in the day to tell you the full story," she chortled. "But to put it simply, your grandmother was born in Fireclan. When she was an apprentice, a loner named Fear arrived, and asked to join. I doubt you know the name Bloodflame, it isn't often spoken these days, but he was a great warrior that saved all of the clans in the past, and this Fear claimed to be her brother." She paused, trying to remember the details Redfern had told her. It wasn't often the two spoke about such things. "Redfern was like me, and you. She was curious, and followed Fear back into loner territory when Darkstar denied him entry to Fireclan. She continued these meetings all through her training, and first there was friendship, then there was love. The day she became a warrior, your grandmother left her clan to live with Fear. A few seasons later, Hawkstar, our old leader, approached Fear and asked him to become Rockclan's deputy. When he came here, Redfern followed him. Shortly after Fear, then Redspirit, died, and your grandmother was left in a strange clan alone and pregnant."
The times when Redfern had kitted, she had done so in loner territory. It had been the same when she had given birth to Spiderleaf, leaving Rockclan behind for a short time. That was the only reason Spiderleaf had ever fallen in love with Robbie, and she wasn't sure whether or not to be grateful to her mother for that. "So she fell in love with someone she wasn't supposed to. Just like I did. And hopefully, you wont have to ever go through that same pain." THIS IS THE NEW YEAR

In love, but never a mate? She was confused. What made her mother want to be a queen? The inclination to ask was high and the apprentice finally managed to settle down to sit. Since they were conversing it just felt right to get into a more comfortable position. Her tail start to thump with excitement once hearing the story of Redfern, her grandmother, the - did she hear this right? Fireclanner? 'That's Crowpaw's clan!' she recalled, remembering her dark friend. Bloodflame saving all the clans. "Bloodflame should be told in our nursery stories," she quickly said before silencing herself again. Redfern like both of them? Her heart started beating at the comment. At least they had something in common! The apprentice then frowned at the mention of Redpaw's dismissal with Fear. Why would she want to leave clan life? 'But Crowpaw wanted to leave Fireclan for a while too. . . Is Fireclan that bad?' "She did all that because she loved Fear. . ." Crevicepaw was speechless. To follow someone the leader did not trust to be a part of a strange clan. That was either the most hawkbrained thing a cat could do, or the most courageous. She could not yet decide. "Why didn't grandma go back to Fireclan when Fear died?" She then jumped back to her feet. "Were you in that litter?" Which meant that her mother was probably the reason why her grandmother stayed in Rockclan. Hearing Spiderleaf's request made Crevicepaw shudder. As much as she wanted to live her life as similar to her mother's she was now brought to a position to not fall in love with a cat not of Rockclan status. "If you loved your cat too, why didn't you leave Rockclan for them? Or they come to Rockclan for you? Ashmist eventually left Iceclan for Fireclan." She did not know much of Crowpaw's grandmother other than that. What if both their grandparents knew one another?
yaayyy, I missed writing longer responses for Crevicepaw considering how I was just reading her kit post length. xD ✿

She'd expected the story to be a little too much for Crevicepaw, but it was their family history and she deserved to know it. Besides, she so rarely actually got to tell it. Now if only she could find a way to say it, that didn't sound like a warning or a premonition of doom.
Noticing Crevicepaw settle herself down, Spiderleaf smiled and sank back on her haunches. It seemed they were getting ready for a good chat, which she had no problem with."He should," she agreed readily. "But it was long ago, and those who remember the story are either too old, or too scarred to properly tell it. Even I was only told because my parents lived in the time after Bloodflame's peace." Of course she could also tell the kits the stories. Generally they went to the elders for such things, but Rockclan was surely lacking in those. "Yes, that was the litter I was born in, along with your uncle Jollyberry. Though it's not so simple." Spiderleaf replied with a sigh, enjoying the apparent naivety in Crevicepaw's comment. "She was exiled from Fireclan because of her love, there is no chance Darkstar would have welcomed her back. You've heard of Darkstar, I assume? She is not the kindest of cats." Not that she needed to bring up Darkstar's history of eating kits, and then one of her warriors. No one needed to be reminded of such things.
Her tail twitched uncomfortably and Spiderleaf looked away, sadness fogging her gaze. "I said Redfern gave birth to myself and your brother outside the clans, yes? We were raised there too, until we were old enough to make the journey back to Rockclan ourselves, or make our own decision about not wanting to go back. That was just her way; she very much enjoyed giving us all free choice." A thrum of warmth filled her at her own words. Sometimes it was hard to realize how lucky one was, until you were actually talking about it out loud. "At that time, my name was simply Snap, and your uncle was Lion. He was carried off by an eagle when he was young, you know, and I thought he was dead. You should ask him for the story sometimes, he loves telling it." She added almost absently.
"But anyway. Redfern left for Rockclan and I was alone, that was when I met Robbie. He is the one I fell in love with; but we, well we were separated and I never thought I'd see him again. I joined Rockclan, and a few moons ago, you know, I found him again. Now he goes by Robinfrost. Do you know that name?" She asked, equally parts proud and bitter. Then she paused in surprise. "Ashmist? And how do you know that name?" Now there was a history.
