Natalia gazed upwards.
There had been a time... Where she'd kept running into cats. Despite how much she advertised how she didn't believe in things such as friendship and love... It had been... Nice to talk to cats. Even cats she thought were a bit too happy like Slate and Dove. She closed her eyes as she tore her gaze from the glittering starry night sky.
It was dark and bright all at the same time and she was alone in a clearing. Heck, she wasn't sure she'd even mind if someone came in and pounced on her, trying to claw out her heart. Literally. Just anything to fill this silence. Of course, things were never quite silent...
But it felt like everything was dead.

Slate would get no sleep tonight.
It was a beautiful new-leaf night, but he could barely close his eyes. He wasn't sure what was wrong with him, why he hadn't got a good night's rest in ages. But right now, he felt like he needed to be awake for something.
Slate looked around outside his den, bright teal eyes flashing in the darkness. Nothing. He continued out, working his way over to a clearing, only to find... Someone he knew, alone. He began walking up to her, not even bothering to hide his footsteps.
"Hey 'Nat." He mewed "You okay?"

Natalia saw something quite alive coming towards her.
Slate. That was a familiar barely visible face. She folded her ears back. A nickname? It was a shortening of her name. She wasn't quite sure how she felt about that. She didn't know how things were supposed to be in a relationship of any nature. Were nicknames a personal or impersonal thing? She didn't know.
"... I suppose." She replied quietly. "Everything just seems... Slow."

Slate sighed as he sat by Natalia.
"I hear ya." He murmured, looking up at the night sky. His coal-black fur bushed out against the cold as a small breeze whipped by. He looked down at her for a moment. I wonder if we'll ever be friends. He felt something strange in his chest, like warm, and fuzzy. He looked away.
"Hey, do you l-" Slate started slowly, but cut himself off at the last second "Nevermind, forget that." He felt awkward, his paws absentmindedly scuffling the ground.

Natalia sighed.
A breeze flew by through her fur. She shivered. It wasn't like she had a full blown winter coat to protect her from the nips and bites of Leaf-bare, which was fighting to stay but losing.
She turned her head to look at Slate. "... No. What were you going to say?" She tried to ask nicely, but it came out more demanding. She wasn't the best at talking properly to others.

Slate stiffend as his tail flicked.
She was demanding him. Oh no, what if she pinned me to the floor and forced- He stopped, his stupid thinking getting a hold of him again. Natalia always had that strong tone of voice. He debated asking, his whiskers twitching.
After a long, slow, and awkward pause, he said "Do... You like me?"

((Mm... Slate needs to befriend her first. Ahahah this'll be fun.))
Natalia noticed Slate seemed... Uncomfortable.
She sighed and looked to the side, slightly embarrassed by her perceived weakness. "... I enjoy your company. I'd... Prefer you to a stranger. I know you. Slightly. You're familiar." She meowed, rambling slightly. She refused to admit that they were friends. She was above that sort of stupid thing... Right?

(Noooo, not character development XP)
Slate perked up when Natalia admitted to like him... In the slightest way possible.
Oh well, it's a start. He thought. Wait... Why do I care..? What start to what? He perished the thought with a flick of his ears.
"That's..." Slate fumbled with his vocabulary, what would that be? "...Nice. I'd, I mean, you're familiar too...? I guess? Uuuhhmm." He shuffled a little farther away, his tail twitching nervously. Way to get off on the right foot Slate.

((Don't worry. I'll um... Try to edge things along best I can.))
Natalia stared as Slate stumbled over his speech.
What was wrong with him? She didn't recall him having any trouble of this sort prior to this encounter. It was... Weird and she didn't really get it.
"... I dislike strangers... And I will admit, interaction is inevitable. It's best with somewhat I have some degree of familiarity with." She didn't mention that oddly content feeling she had, talking to him.

(I was kidding with the character development, BUT OKAY)
Slate felt like an idiot talking to her.
What was wrong with him? He was just stumbling over words like a kit over its own paws. He took a few quiet breaths and felt better, then Natalia started talking. He looked at her, always confused by her choice of words.
"Yeah, I agree." Slate agreed. Even though I have little to know idea what you're saying. "Sorry for being such a dork, I haven't gotten much sleep lately."

((Y'know what... I'mma say they're already friends at the least. It's just a problem of getting her to admit it mostly ahahah))
Natalia wondered why Slate looked at her that way.
It was almost as if she was an alien. Was she? She knew she wasn't exactly... Like most cats. Her rejection of relationships being a large factor into that. Though... She was beginning to house doubts as to that. Long ago, her family, her closest bonds had all walked out on her.
Surely friends, who would not be as close as family, would walk out on her as well? Now, she was not so sure. She tried to dispel the doubts, but it remained as a niggling sensation in the back of her mind. "... There is no need to apologize. I'm... A bit of a... Grump." She stated awkwardly and lamely.
She felt out of place talking to him.

Slate huffed a laugh.
"Ha. You're the grump, right." He said in the most sarcastic voice he could muster "You obviously haven't seen me on a bad day, I'm like a badger." He stretched his jaws out in a yawn, noticing the moon was a long ways across the starry sky now.
"Great Light, how long have we been sitting here?" Slate yawned again, blinking his bright eyes.

Natalia didn't respond aside from a subtle twitch of the ear.
She recognized the truth in Slate's words. It was true, she'd never seen him in a less than cheery mood before. She looked away towards the stars as the dark furred tom yawned.
"I am not sure...." She responded to his question. She didn't say anything for a moment. "I believe you've never seen me on a good day." She meowed quietly. She was fairly sure all her good days were back when she could barely remember.
