Paleheart was a literal mess these days, his sandy pelt was always tangled and muddy out of neglect, he never talked to anyone, he was just a cat who brought only a mouse to the prey pile. But hey, the clan had so many blind cats that no one would probably notice. It was an average day until he spotted his mate for the first time in forever, but he didn't feel that much love, only friendship. "D- Dewmask?"

Dewmask had just been hunting. She had gotten used to life around here once more, even stopping by to talk to her eldest daughter once in a while. The scents of the mouse in her jaws and the squirrel beneath her neck overwhelmed her scenting any other cats, so she placed the prey she had just hunted for onto the pile. She stepped away to try and breathe in the scents of the clan of trees when someone stammered behind her, "D-Dewmask? The moment the statement had finished, she had turned around and immediately sniffed the air with both her nose and her mouth.
Paleheart. She had hung out with him for most of her life, being his old mate and all, so the blind cat knew his scent all over. However, she didn't feel anything like she had before. "Paleheart? That's you?" She mewed, padding towards his scent. "I, uh, I didn't know you would be around here." She kind of felt bad for flaunting her prey when she entered the camp now.

Paleheart felt panicked inside as Dewmask headed over towards him, his short tail twitched. All his mind could process at the moment was 'oh crud'. Moments passed and the tom snapped back into reality, he stared at the blind she-cat. "Yeah, it's me... But you, when did you come back? I've missed you forever..." He held back tears, thinking it'd get more awkward if he cried.

He sounded heartbroken over her disappearance. How was she going to tell him that she didn't really feel anything but a small relief for him being okay? "I got back to Treeclan a few... er, weeks ago, I think." The mask-furred she-cat sat down, curling her tail over her paws and placing a smile on her face. "I don't know where I went, but I'm glad I'm back here." She made sure that her blind amber eyes stared at Paleheart's own face.

The tom didn't know what to do right now, he was happy Dewmask was back, but he didn't know why he couldn't feel much about her. "A few weeks!? Ugh... I'm an idiot. But I'm happy you're back too." He smiled, lowering his ears.

The tan she-cat laughed at Paleheart slightly, shifting her weight slightly. She waited for an awkward cheek rub, or something along that line. Paleheart didn't do any of those things. She really didn't know what to talk about, and she didn't want to initiate any lovey-dovey contact when she didn't feel like doing so, so she just sat there, eyes narrowing in her thought. "...I've been running into more trees than my whole apprenticeship combined." Dewmask mewed, tail waving.

Paleheart snorted a bit, feeling like the awkwardness is crushing him like a bug. He didn't try to nuzzle his mate, he didn't want to ruin the conversation by making a stupid move, she didn't seem like she loved him that much, he pushed the thought aside for later.
"Heh. I remember that, that's kinda how we met, right?" He meowed, catching on in conversation.

Dewmask nodded, leaving behind the thoughts of her past mate not nuzzling her as she continued to talk. "Yes! Well, except I ran into a den wall, but that was pretty much the same thing." She smiled, her mind bringing up the scent and mind-constructed image of Acaciapaw. "I think I almost ran into a tree on the way to meet..." She fell silent, ears swiveling around to see if other cats were listening, and was sure she smelled someone else, "...your dad hunting, but I'm growing out of it again. Hopefully."
(when will the topic of the kids come up? who knows)

Paleheart shook his head a bit, it was funny. Each time the two saw each other, Dewmask was running into something. At the mention of his father, Paleheart looked around and replied, "You did? Did you see him, is he okay?" He hadn't seen Spruceclaw in a long time, he should visit sometime. (Eh, who knows? Paleheart could remember he actually had children )

"...I was talking about the time you brought me to him, heh." Dewmask laughed, tail tip slightly leaving her tan paws. "Wasn't he a brown tabby, if I remember your talks about him correctly?" She tilted her ears upwards, but it seemed like the other cats were going on their own business, leaving for patrols and talking to others or something along those lines. Acaciapaw was likely sitting in her den, or out practicing with her mentor. Her daughter said she was a brown-ish tabby, right?
(I had Dewmask meet Acaciapaw earlier, so she remembers them, for sure. She's trying to remember Pale's dad...)

Paleheart wanted to slap himself, "Oh, sorry." He meowed awkwardly, turning red in the face. "And yeah, my dad's a brown tabby with green eyes, explains my brown paw and ears." He added, it also explained his left green eye. A thought struck in the warriors mind that made him feel terrible.
"Oh yeah... How are the kits doing...?"
(Oh XD)

Dewmask paused, nervousness rippling through her whiskers. "The kits... um..." The tan she-cat tried to let a smile be placed on her face, but it was failing. Badly. "Er, Acaciapaw is getting along great with her new mentor... but..." Dewmask's ears fell slightly when she remembered what Acaciapaw told her. It would worry her former mate as well, right? "The other kits have disappeared, like I did, and I worry that when I disappeared, I may have taken them with me..."
She couldn't remember. Dewmask only remembered that her daughter was a brown tabby much like her grandfather, and not a lick of what her other kits looked like. She felt motherly towards them, but the blind cat wasn't feeling like a mate towards her former mate.

(Welp)
Paleheart's fur fluffed out as the blind she-cat spoke, he lowered his brown ears. She didn't look too happy. "Oh... Well... At least we have one kit here." He murmured, remembering his son Thicketkit. He was gone too? He shook his mind away from the thoughts and shuffled his paws.
"I don't blame you, but can I say something... About us?"

He doesn't blame her. Thank goodness. Dewmask let the slight relief wash over her whiskered, but at Paleheart's next statement, the relief faded away to worry once more. "Err, sure, Pale." She mewed, ears perking up on her head to listen well to Paleheart's next statement.
(gotta get those divorce papers beep beep)

Ugh, how was he gonna put this. Paleheart thought for a moment before continuing, "Um... I kinda think that what we were was a fling. I love you... But as a friend now." He meowed, lowering hos ears. "I guess we were caught up in the moment?"
