Squirrelbite Redkit was worriedly staring down at a mouse, he was holding between his two tiny paws, though it was big enough to make it seem like he was hugging it instead of holding it. He was by the fresh-kill pile, been curious about the prey.
He understood that the prey had to die to feed the clan, but this furry creature had been seemingly mangled. He'd seen the other prey and the kills weren't nearly as messy as this one. It troubled him. He lightly pawed at the prey's dead ears.

"Hey kid."
Squirrelpaw scented the air, which besides for the normal trees and prey, held something more interesting. It was faint, but the scent clinging to this kits pelt was unmistakable. He was an outsider.
She looked at him contemptuously, unsure why he was just staring at the mouse rather than eating it, as if he expected someone to feed it to him. "Playing with prey is against the warrior code, y'know."

Redkit looked up at see an older she-cat, presumably an apprentice. He was pretty sure she was apprentice-sized, anyways. He blinked. "Is it?" He asked. He was... Reasonably sure he had the gist of the code in his head, but he might've forgotten a detail.

Squirrelpaw rolled her eyes. Of course kits didn't know the warrior code nowadays, Arrowstar and Crystalbird were too busy making best friends with rogues and kittypets to focus on actually helping their clan-mates. "Yeah, it's pretty bad. So I suggest you eat that mouse before someone sends you back from wherever it is you came from."

Redkit's eyes suddenly widened in fear. "Okay, okay, I'll eat it!" He immediately took a bite out of the mouse, trying to internally console himself, and swallowed the bit of meat. He didn't want to be sent back! If he got sent back to his original housefolk, they'd never let him leave again!

"Well, don't make yourself choke." Squirrelpaw mewed, amusement in her voice. She looked down at the little kit with glinting eyes, the tip of her tail flicking back and forth. "Listen, it isn't that hard to adapt here. I could give you some tips, if you want."

Redkit slowed down to a more reasonable eating pace, looking up, slightly wary of Squirrelpaw. Then he internally scolded himself. It seemed like she wanted to help him, not kick him out! He lifted his head from the mouse and tilted his head. "Some tips? That'd be wonderful, thank you."

"It's nothing." Squirrelpaw shrugged it off. Clearly, this tom-kit needed as much help as he could get with fitting in. Maybe Squirrelpaw would even end up being his mentor- that would work out fairly nicely. "Watch what cats do, not what they say. There's a lot of cats who are only looking out for themselves here."

Redkit smiled gently. Then he blinked and his expression fell into neutral confusion. "Looking out for themselves? That sounds... Weird." He sounded uncomfortable, not really sure how to describe it. He might've left his family in search for adventure, but... He still cared for others despite not knowing much about anyone.

Squirrelpaw nodded. "Yeah, I know. It sucks." She sat down beside the kit, curling her long tail over her paws. She felt a bit bad, bringing up these serious subjects, but he was going to learn sooner or later. "Some cats here care only about themselves, and not the good of TreeClan."

Redkit blinked. "Why are they here if they don't care about Treeclan...?" He asked, his ears folding back. He felt a bit guilty, since his reasons for coming to Treeclan were a bit selfish... But he was sure if he stayed, he'd have plenty of reasons to love Treeclan and want to stay! He just wanted a chance.

"Well.. To be honest, I'm not sure." Squirrelpaw didn't particularly hate this cat because he wasn't born in TreeClan, since he was just a kit, but she didn't want him turning out like other non clan-born cats. "I think they just prefer the safety that living in a clan offers. Or the power, for some of them."

Redkit blinked. "Oh. That's weird." He shook his head gently. "I don't understand it." He had no interest in power or living a safe, padded life. He wanted a life of excitement, something that could feel real and fulfilling.

She nodded her head in agreement. "So, to be sure that those cats don't hurt you.. You have to be careful, and figure out others intentions before you decide to trust them." Squirrelpaw explained, hoping the young kit would understand.

Redkit thought that sounded a bit... Lonely almost. "Shouldn't I be able to trust anyone in the clan...?" He was rather troubled by Squirrelpaw's words, not used to living somewhere where had to exercise such extreme caution with others. He kept a lot of things from his parents before he came to Treeclan, so he did have a concept of secrets and trust but... It still felt off.
