It is going to be entered in a national contest across the US and i really want to win, please keep in mind it is a rough draft...
Does Patriotism still matter?
I strongly believe patriotism still does, ever since 9/11 people have been trying to prove they are loyal to America. Doing things such as buying magnets to put on their cars, flags to put in front of their home, or even a small flag to carry around. Sales have gone up in the past few years of those items and other things to show that people still care. My dad and I even bought a huge flag and put it in front of our house to show we love America, I even own a few red, white, and blue necklaces that I wear sometimes. Radio stations have been showing their love for America by playing patriotic songs on the radio, such as “God Bless America” and others.
But the downside to all this patriotism is that it has caused so much turmoil throughout the country over these past few years. Some believe that the government sending troops to Iraq is wrong and that the war has lost sight of it’s purpose. Others believe that this war has become more of a “war over oil” rather than a “war against terror”. The gas prices, reaching over $3.00 per gallon, being the reason. A lot of people say that is a pretty unreasonable price, but they continue to stay loyal to America none the less.
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are guideposts that our countries were founded on, that’s why we hear about it so much in history class. They are important concepts, but some don’t appreciate what they mean, sometimes I admit I get bored. Some think that if you weren’t born in America you aren’t an “American” but truly the first settlers in America were foreigners themselves. What they don’t realize is that if you come to America believing in it and being patriotic, you’re an “American” and that’s that. Being patriotic can mean being a good Christian, following the law, and simply showing respect for your country despite politics and turmoil. You don’t have to be very obvious about it, that’s a choice.
All in all, to most patriotism still matters, but others can have their own opinion too. Patriotism doesn’t necessarily have to be symbolic or an item, it can be expressed by understanding how your country came to be, and that’s perfectly fine.
