I wrote part of a story and I need to see if people like it. So here it is.
Introduction
They knew from the moment I was born. My parents weren’t able to care for a special needs child like myself so they brought me to an orphanage. I was taken to the orphanage and have been living there ever since. If you are wondering what happened to me, I was born deaf and paralyzed from the waist down.
My name is Rocky and I am 12 years old now. I am still living in the orphanage. I have lived in many foster homes but nobody has adopted me yet. Life is tough when you keep leaving different schools throughout the years. I have no friends but my grades are important. Even if they aren’t very good. I am in a wheelchair. I can’t hear or move much. Learning is very hard for me but I have learned to read. I can move from my waist up but other than that I am immobilized. The people at the orphanage are nice I guess. But not like friends. The other children are adopted all the time. One by one they all leave. I can’t wait till it’s my turn to finally have a home.
Chapter 1
Silence
I roll outside into the backyard of the orphanage. The wind whips my wavy blonde hair out of my face. The other children in the building play around in the leaves. I sigh a big, heavy sigh. My breath turns to frost and floats away. The autumn leaves scatter the yard. I can’t hear the crunch of the leaves but the other children seem to love the sound. A little boy with curly blonde hair runs up to me with a flower in his hands. I smile and take it from his hands. He smiles to me and I smile back. Then he runs off.
The children look up from what they are doing so the bell must have rung. They run inside and I follow. It must be dinner time. I wheel in and the tables are set up. I roll over and they take away a chair from a spot and that is where I stay. A couple people sit at the other side of the table but they ignore me. I feel alone here. A nice girl with curly red hair comes over and sits across from me. I guess you could call her my friend. Her name I learned was Allie. The food is brought to the tables and I ate gratefully. I have a lovely dinner of mashed potatoes and turkey. They were leftovers from Thanksgiving. After dinner they bring out pudding and I ate a nice serving of it. Allie smiles at me and gets up to go play games with the other kids before bed.
I wheel over to the elevator and a boy presses the button I need to go. He also presses the button of his floor. He looks over at me as the doors close. I look at him and he looks away. I look at the doors nervously. The orphanage is three stories high and there are no stairs. The elevator stops on the second floor and I wheel out. The boy nods to me as the doors close and I am left alone. All the cots on which the girls sleep are in rows before me. I go over to mine and another orphanage person helps me into my pajamas. Then I wheel over and brush my teeth in the little sink in the corner. I wheel over to my cot and the girl helps me into bed.
As I lay there, my mind whirls with thoughts. Oh how I wish I could hear the leaves. If I could walk. Everything I can’t do flashes in my mind. How fun would it be to hear and move? I think about the beautiful animals I have seen in pictures. The horses. Such amazing creatures they are. I wish I could ride one. I have seen people on TV riding horses. That would be amazing to ride one.
My eyelids get heavy. I soon close them and dream of riding a beautiful white horse. With golden eyes and a mane made of silk. In my dreams I can hear. I can hear the click of the hooves of my horse. I can hear the birds overhead. The water by my side, swishing. My dreams are what my reality should be. I should have a life where I could do what I wanted to do. And not be stuck in a chair with wheels. I dream and dream, not wanting it to stop.
I wake up with a start. I have no idea what woke me but as I open my eyes I see Allie standing over me. She looks worried.
“Are you alright?” She says, forgetting I am deaf. I shrug to tell her I can’t hear and she laughs silently. She signs ‘Are you alright’ and I sign back ‘Yes. Why?’ Allie looks nervously at me. ‘You were crying in your sleep’ I look stunned. ‘I am alright now’ I sign. She sighs with relief, or that’s what it looked like. I smile at her and she helps me out of bed. An orphanage person came in and helped me into a t-shirt and a pair of torn jeans. Allie came back and helped me into my wheelchair and we headed down for breakfast.
When we get down to the first floor, a group of people are in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Allie pulls a chair away from a table and I wheel over into the spot. She sits and breakfast is put on tables. I look over at another table and see the boy from the elevator. I smile and he looks away nervously. I turn back to Allie and see sausage, pancakes, and milk for breakfast. I put some on my plate and take a bite of the sausage and pour syrup on my pancakes. I eat everything and back up. I bumped into another table and wince. Allie runs over and leads me outside.
She seems eager to get me outside. I don’t know why though. Once I get out there I know why. It was snowing. Snowing in the fall! It was amazing! Allie gives me a ball of snow and I throw it. The snow hits a tree and explodes. I smile and Allie claps. She throws snow in the air as the wind picks up and it swirls around us. I sign to her ‘Winter Wonderland’ she laughs silently and twirls around. Allie was so beautiful. Her red hair falls perfectly by her shoulders in tight curls. When she twirls, her hair seems to be flying. I smile and stick out my tongue. Snowflakes land on my tongue. She does the same.
An orphanage worker runs out and yells silently at Allie for bringing me outside. She cringes and walks inside. The worker wheels me inside and brushes me off; she wraps me in blankets and tries to make me warm. But to tell you the truth, I wasn’t cold at all. I signed to her ‘I’m not cold.’ She rubs my shoulders. I roll my eyes but let her warm me.
Allie comes over and looks like she apologized to the worker. The worker scowls at her and leaves. Allie walks over and hugs me. I hug her back. Allie then leads me over to a table with arts and crafts on it. I get a piece of paper and scissors. I fold the paper a bunch of times and cut out shapes. When I unfold it, the paper is turned into a snowflake. I color it with different colors and show it to Allie. She smiles and holds up her drawing of me and her together in the snow. I touch it and she touches my hand. I know we will be friends forever.
