The fiery sun blazed on the reddish brown rock wall that lined the river. The stone wall consisted of dull, smooth rocks. They sizzled in the summer sunshine. Scrubby trees branched out from the dry stones. The bit of vegetation grew thinly, with few leaves that sprouted out from the dark brown sticks. They rustled in the gentle breeze that flew from West to East.
Further upstream, the rock wall became more rugged. Jagged boulders and pebbles stuck out from the surface. Each rock was shaped perfectly with square and rectangular faces. The rocks were positioned in an unorganized manner, which made the canyon wall sharp and rough, despite the flatness of the individual rocks. As the rocks came closer to the water, the rocks became smaller, and broken up.
Millions of palm-sized rocks made up the shoreline. A shadow from the side of the canyon casted onto the congregation of stones below. The tops of the boulders were bleached by the bright sun, and the lower halves were darkened because they were wet from the river. Murky waves lapped the riverbank gently. They washed up sand, silt, and mud onto the side of the wide stream. The riverbank smelled of mud and freshwater. As the emerald water grew deeper, the waves grew higher.
The wild river churned up mountainous waves. The tips of the waves were as white as snowcapped peaks. Waves from the river produced mist which glittered in the steamy air. The troughs of the turbulent waves sparkled a dark green. They crashed against each other, which caused more giant waves to form. The river raged rapidly from its northern source, southbound. The sound of the rapids echoed in the unpopulated canyon. Few animals or people lurked to absorb the deafening noises of the untamed river.
In the middle of the water was a shining blue raft. A gold stripe stretched all the way across it. It was made of rubber, so it glistened in the hot sunshine. The raft was smooth and wet from its voyage through the river thus far. Light bounced off the raft, which glinted in its bright surroundings. The raft carried two men and their luggage. Its rear was pushed up ever so slightly by a large wave, which caused the bags to topple.
The men’s luggage got drenched from the water that poured over it. The orange bags were strapped down with black ropes to keep them from getting flung into the rapids. As the raft twisted, turned, and bounced through the river, the bags jumped and slid a bit on the floor of the raft.
A tall man stood in between the piles of luggage and supplies. The middle aged person wore a blaze orange life-jacket which was buckled tightly, and a faded red hat. He held a saffron paddle in his left arm to steer the raft in the appropriate direction. The man squinted his eyes into the bright horizon to see where they were headed. He anticipated a sharp bend in the river was nearing. He breathed heavily as his nerves ate away at his adventurous attitude.
Below the tall man leaned another man. He wore a tangerine safety vest as well, and a periwinkle-and-white baseball cap. The person pressed his hands against the front edge of the raft as he peered into the distance. Fear filled the man’s heart, and his facial expression showed his emotion. As nervous as he was for the oncoming challenge, however, he was excited to be in a dangerous circumstance. He cracked a large smile and showed the world that he was ready for anything. Since his jaws were parted to show a smile, mist from the angry waves sprayed into his mouth. It tasted muddy. He closed his mouth and watched the swirling water ahead.
