PROLOUGE

It was one of the coldest times yet in MoonClan. Ashstar shivered
and looked at Blackgoose longingly, hoping he would know what to do. “I don’t always have the answers. I was a medicine cat, but I am not anymore. This wind is uncontrollable.” Blackgoose looked down. “I’m afraid a dark cat has been born. This wind has only come once before.” Ashstar sighed. “Things have been getting worse. Leaf-bare has come, and my Clan is longing for hope.” She looked behind her. A dark she-cat was walking towards them. “Nice to see you again, Dashingtail. The wind is very strong. I hate it, and Blackgoose and I believe it means something bad.” Dashingtail whipped her tail around like she always did. “I agree. I may have not been here very long, but I know a few things about weather. This definitely is not normal, especially up here in MoonClan.” Blackgoose pointed down with his tail. “This is not good,” He mewed quietly. “Watch.”
Blackgoose, Ashstar, and Dashingtail watch as a white she-cat gave birth. She was yowling with pain and a tom, who was probably the father, was panicking. “HELP!!! SOMEBODY HELP MY BELOVED MATE!!!” They all looked up at each other. “How is giving birth bad? Is it just because she is in pain?” Dashingtail suggested with stupidity. “No, you mousebrain!” Blackgoose shook his head. “Don’t you sense it? She is giving birth to a dangerous cat. A cat that will use her power for evil!” Ashstar kept looking down. “I can sense it too. This cat will be mislead. We must do something. We must send 3 cats to save her from killing out of envy, anger, and ignorance.” Ashstar sighed and looked up at Blackgoose. He replied with, “I can sense something special in this other cat too. He possesses strength and wisdom. He will protect his sister from evil.” Dashingtail looked at Ashstar. “I’m no medicine cat, but I’m thinking the same thing. We need 3 cats in TimeClan with the ability to stand strong. We should get them to TimeClan through Hornetstrike. She will be mating with Snakeash soon, and the only soon-to-be queen.” Ashstar and Blackgoose shook their heads in agreement. “It shall be done.” Ashstar said as a conclusion.
A shadow rose upon them, covering the whole crowd of cats. They looked around and panicked. This had only happened once before. At it had meant something very bad and very evil…

CHAPTER ONE
Strange Surroundings

“Move right! Move left! Catch it catch it catch it catch it, you got it! Good job Ashkit!” Blazekit pranced around with excitement. Ashkit caught the pecan, and now it was heading his way. “Go Blazekit! Run left! Jump! Go right! Aw, mouse dung. You didn’t catch it.” Ashkit giggled. “Surely Blazestar, leader of TimeClan should be able to catch a pecan.” Blazekit toppled onto Ashkit. “If I’m Blazestar, I can rip you to shreds!” They rolled around on top of each other and tackled each other in a playful way. Icekit sighed and curled up into a tighter ball. Why can’t they mature a little? She thought, frustrated and annoyed. It felt like Hornetstrike could read minds. “They’re just kits, like you. They have to have fun sometimes. Icekit, why don’t you go play with them? They seem to be enjoying themselves. Go ahead.”
Icekit grumbled and padded over to her littermates slowly. She needed to get some sleep. Some strange yowl had kept her up all night a few sunrises before. It had kept her up the next night and the next. She needed to stop wondering and start getting involved. She thought all the tackling and playing was mousebrained. She wanted to leave camp and explore. She wanted to hunt and fight. She felt called to do something special. She stopped and turned to face Hornetstrike. “Can I go outside and look around camp? Please, Hornetstrike?” Hornetstrike sighed, knowing Icekit had a habit of looking in others’ things. “Yes, but don’t get into any trouble. It’s already enough trouble taking care of 3 kits.” Hornetstrike got quieter, as if she was talking to herself. “Plus, Foxkit and Hoveringkit are just as crazy as Blazekit and Ashkit.” Now she really did talk to herself. “You’ve got four more moons, Hornetstrike. Then you’re back to the normal life of a warrior. Only 4 more moons and you know it. I don’t think I can take it.”
On the way out, Icekit bumped into Snakeash. “Oh! Sorry little kit of mine! Where are you going?”
“I was just going to look around camp and talk to the elders and such. Why do you ask?”
“Oh, just wondering.” Snakeash smiled and slipped past her carefully.

When Snakeash was in the nursery, Icekit continued her walk out. The fresh-kill pile next to the high-rock was piled high. A border patrol had just come back with Ivystretch, Adderslash, and Birchflower. They looked liked nothing important had happened. She decided to keep walking. On her way to the elders’ den, she watched Riverfoot and Bridgeclaw sharing tongues. Riverfoot whispered something so quietly, that you couldn’t even hear the slightest squeak.
Icekit didn’t wonder long about what Riverfoot said. If it was about patrols, Riverfoot probably wouldn’t have whispered it, but Icekit didn’t particularly care. When Icekit got to the other side of camp, where the elders’ den was, she slipped inside and sat down by Pebblestep.
“Do you have any stories from the older days you can share with me? My littermates are being mousebrains, and Hornetstrike said to play with them, or stop being grumpy.” Icekit mumbled just loud enough for Pebblestep to understand what she was saying. “Well, I guess I could think of something.” Pebblestep grunted and started pondering.
Pebblestep was the nicer elder. He wasn’t as grumpy as Sorrelmouse, who would complain even if she had ONE, just ONE tick. She had learned this by speaking to the apprentices, especially Autumnpaw, who was Icekit’s best friend.
Finally, Pebblestep had a story to share about a battle from before Hornetstrike was born.
“A long time ago, there was a war between TimeClan and FateClan. I was only an apprentice at the time, known as Pebblepaw, and my mentor was Ruinedridge, a warrior you do not know. He died as an older warrior, but that’s not important. We were on a border patrol, you see, with Sorrelmouse, also know as Sorrelpaw. A few FateClan warriors had crossed our border, gathering herbs for their Clan.” Pebblestep stopped and coughed a little, taking a deep type of breath.
“Go on,” Icekit offered. This seemed interesting. She seemed to know where he was going with this.
“Ok, well, Ruinedridge confronted them, saying they shouldn’t be taking our stuff. As FateClan warriors would do, they ignored us and kept taking our herbs. I was told to go fetch our warriors and our deputy, so Evestar, then known as Evestroke, and tons of other warriors ran to our border to confront the herb-stealers. We attacked then one of their apprentices ran to fetch even more warriors and their leader-.”
Icekit stopped him to give her ideas. “Is that how Evestar became leader? Was Ashstar killed and Evestroke took one of Rootstar’s 9 lives, not knowing it was his last?”
Pebblestep coughed violently before he wheezed, “Very good. That’s true alright, but how did you figure it out?”
“Instinct, I guess.” Icekit pushed a pebble back and forth with her paw, not sure what to tell him. Soon she gave away and let an outburst come out. “I don’t know, I’ve been doing it with everyone lately and I don’t know how I do it and it scares me!” She began to cry, wondering about herself.
