So this is something I've been working on, I don't really know what I'm going to end up calling it. But ya, please comment with your opinion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Allie Trumons, a normal girl of 15, sat in the big apple tree that resided in the grassy meadow that bordered her backyard. Her long, red hair blowing in the wind as she surveyed the bouncing night phlox that covered the meadow in a blanket of white.
Her green eyes drifted first to the old wooden fence where she had had her first kiss, Eric had been his name, she recalled, slowly drifting back to that night.
His tan arms wrapping tenderly around her waist as she rose up onto the balls of her feet and brushed his lips with hers. Her father rushing into the backyard, waving his fists at them as Eric made a mad dash for the old weathered gate. Oh he had been livid with anger! He couldn’t take his little girl growing up, but the kiss was still hot on her lips, the soft words he had whispered in her ear echo through her mind.
I love you Allie, I always will
She shivered contently, her eyes now drifting to the old rubber tire Bria, Summer and her had hung on one of the apple trees many flowering boughs. The tire still hung there, the black piece of rubber basking in the afternoon’s sun.
They had gotten it from her father’s old pickup truck. The tire had been brand new then. But that had been last summer. As was the kiss, everything had changed, the tire was old and worn and her kiss with Eric was now nothing more then a brief spark in a dull landscape.
She sighed, brushing her hair off of her face then allowing her eyes to move on, this time landing on a fluttering piece of paper in the meadow. Pieces of paper got stuck in the grassy area all the time, but something was pulling her towards it, an almost magnetic charm to the purple piece of paper that fluttered dully from the ground.
She jumped from the tree, landing on the ground with a soft thud as she walked to the piece of paper.
Now that it was right in front of her she could see that it was an envelope, no bigger then a pack of gum, carefully wedged into the long prairie grass by the blowing winds of spring.
She bent over and plucked it lightly from the ground before turning it over in her palm.
It was smooth and there was only one indication that led her to believe it hadn’t just been blown there.
Her name was written in a loopy script across the front of the envelope. Her eyes grew wide as this information hit her. All sorts of questions started to fly through her head.
Why is this here? Did I accidentally drop it? Is it from someone I know?
Then something unthinkable that made her heart flutter
Could it be from Eric?
She shook her head, no, not possible, he left you remember? Deserted you without a single explanation!
She walked slowly back to her house, a dazed look on her pale face as she blindly crossed, first the threshold into her house then into her room. She sat on her widow sill and looked out onto the meadow, a peaceful air about the well-known place.
She held the envelope in her hands, slowly turning it round in her hand.
It was a deep purple with a gold seal, a regal deer pressed into the golden wax. With trembling hands she opened the sealed letter and reveal a single sheet of paper with a typed message imprinted on its flat surface.
Dear Allie,
You fill my world with light
And glow like the stars in the brilliant night
When I look into your crystal eyes
It’s like staring into truth among a world filled with lies
I’ve known you since grade 6; do you know me as well as I know you?
No. But every time I pass you in the hallway or sit next to in a class, I get lost in the depth of your green eyes.
If you want to know who I am, leave a note in the tire swing that was hung by your own delicate hands last summer.
I shall always wait for you, no matter how long it takes
Night Phlox
Her eyes grew wide as she finished reading. Someone in her class? Someone in her class had liked her since grade 6. That was 4 years ago.
She looked at the letter in her hand before getting up off of the windowsill and walking quickly over to her desk and picking up her phone, smiling at the words that she had bejeweled it with 3 months previous.
The now bejeweled phone read, ‘Bitter Sweet’ in bright red jewels.
Her friends had decided that over the summer they would decide the best saying for each of them. Allies was ‘bitter sweet’ because of her mean, shy yet kind personality towards people she didn’t know.
Bria’s phone had ‘Funkalicious Babe’ printed across the top in different colored jewels. Summer and I had both won that argument. She deserved that title with all her funky hair changes and drastic mood swings!
Now Summer on the other hand was some what normal, in hot pink jewels were the words ‘Silver Heart’
She chuckled, remembering the look of anger and shock on her dad’s face when he had walked into her bedroom to find her newly bejeweled phone.
She quickly tapped out two messages to her friends, both telling them of the strange yet convincing letter and asking them whether or not she should answer this mysterious stranger?
Every time she thought of the loopy script and the unknown writer, her heart began wildly fluttering in her chest. What if it was Eric? Finally showing he still cared?
She shook her head as if to clear it, no, it couldn’t be him, her life had just returned to normal after all the pain and turmoil. But she couldn’t think of that now, she had to concentrate. What should he write back?
‘Hi, thanks for the compliments but who are you?’
No, she had to be careful about this, if she did accept this into her life, what would happen? She had just gotten over the abrupt disappearance of Eric, was she ready for another relationship?
After about an hour of thought, she constructed what she found to be a suitable letter to this secret someone.
Dear Night Phlox,
I’m flattered, but wouldn’t you rather just tell me who you are?
I don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship yet, but I would cherish you as a friend!
Sincerely,
Allie
She smiled to herself as she slipped the single sheet into a plain, ivory envelope. As she walked back down and out the door she sealed it, messily writing Night Phlox on the front side of the envelope, using her hand as a table.
She looked back at the tire swing as she walked loftily back towards her house, maybe, just maybe, she could learn to live with this Night Phlox.
