At first people think we're joking when they see our advertisements or intvitetations. Maybe they don't want to believe, maybe they do but just can't bring their narrow minds around it. But it's true. Here at the Double M ranch we do not have horses, cows, pigs, goats or even llamas. No, we have pegusi. Yes, that's right. Winged horses believed in by the early greeks and then the early Romans. Those are the creatures! Beautiful things, I assure you.
Well, the day this story begins is a regular here at my home.
My eyes opened to the sound of my alarm clock. It wasn't even light out yet. I smacked the snooze button, wanting to relish my last few seconds in bed before getting up. Taking three slow and full breaths of the early morning air I finally sat up.
Lightly smiling at my jobs today I stood and pitter-pattered to my closet where I went through my T-shirts till I found a blue one with white sleeves. I took that and selected my favorite pair of jeans. Quickly I changed into them (Well, of course along with underwear. But, who wants to hear about that?) then chuckled to myself, "No mucking stalls today, no cleaning troughs. I've got it easy."
So, running my hand against the walls as I went I walked to the kitchen door. I didn't even bother to grab some food. Taking a skip-hop out the door I began to walk to one of the stables. Particularly, the staff barn. This was where my two lovlies stayed. The view was beautiful, but I didn't pay much attention to it. It was my every day view. Beautiful, yes. But to me it was also boring and normal. Soon, without my taking time to go sight-seeing I was there.
I paused by the door to put my best smile on then walked forward. As I walked in I was immediately stopped by the boy who might as well be my older brother. "Hi, Max." I said."Heello, Caily." He replied. "'Horse' camp duties? That makes both of us." I smiled.
"So, you're the leader this year?"
"No, one of the guides."
I blinked. Who was the leader, then? I looked at him quizically, then shrugged. "Who're you bringing?" "Paint," he replies. "Alright, then I'll bring Joker."
Joker and paint were both paints. Joker had a white face and beautiful blue eyes, white feather wings, and other than that classic brown-and-white paint markings. He was on of my beauties. I went into the stall we used for tack and other things and grabbed a grooming bucket, his saddle, his bridle and his lead rope. I looked small compaired to the things I was carrying. Out the back of the barn and into the pasture I went with all the things. Putting them all down properly and out of the way I grabbed his haler and lead-rope. I sighed with exasperation as I realised I forgot his blankets. Max was in the doorway of the barn with them when I turned around. "Common, we have to make it to the arena barn to see which horeses were picked. Today, Caily!" he laughed. I put the blankets by the saddle. "Right," I said, breezing past him right to Joker's stall. He was stamping his hoof impatiently. I rolled my eyes and entered.
I fixed the bridle on his head, clipped the lead-rope to it then began to lead him out. It wasn't that I needed the lead-rope with him, but it would double as his reins with an easy adjustment. Pegusi tack. Sooo easy.
As we walked out I murmered to Joker quietly. Calling him my 'pretty baby', ect. Overdoing it, but he was. At the mouth of the door Max joined us at the other side of Joker. I tied him to a rail and we began to groom him. Max had the curry-comb, which he had stolen from my bucket, and was using it on Joker before I even had him tied up. I took the soft-brush and ran it over the spots he had gotten with the curry-comb. It was done in no time. I had just picked his hooves yesterday after riding him, so he didn't need that. I patted him, fixed his mane, then turned my attention to the saddle-blankets. Like I'd been taught to do I adjusted them before putting the on him. Thick, sweat absorbant pad about an inch before the other. Now the hard part. Max tapped Joker's wings and they spread obeydiantly. Quicky I flung the blankets on his back the best I could. I checked on each side, blankets were even. Next I grabbed the saddle and flung it on. Joker's wings then folded.
A pegusi saddle is modified from a horse saddle. Same basic parts of a western saddle, but just below where the stirrup is (Or just above, depending on your hight) there's and indent to hold their wings. This make it more comphy for them, but harder to to get on.
I did the cinch, the breast collar and then we were ready. I untied Joker, clipped the other end of his lead-rope to the other end of his halter then nodded. I was satisfied. "Ready?" asked Max. "Yup." I replied. "You need help getting on, don't you?" he asked. "Please?" I admitted. I put my left foot in the sirrup and He boosted up my other leg. I swung on, then turned Joker. He was an easy ride, always doing what he was told. "You ready?" I asked. Max walked into the barn and brought out Paint (who was already all tacked up.) Max nodded and swung himself on Paint. He began to walk him and Joker fallowed suite.
We walked the horses all the way to the arena barn, then we swung off. I patted Joker and unclipped one side of his reins, making them a lead-rope again. I heard a clattering in the barn and I could tell Max could too. Switching to holding his lead-rope with his hands he patted my shoulder. "Mmmk, little sis. Ready to meet one of the people who we have to spend the rest of our summer with?" He wasn't really brother, but I didn't care. I nodded and we proceed on together.
