Okay, before you begin, this was an english project. We had to wrote an adaption of the Greek tragedy, Antigone. I chose the Lion King as my theme, and we wrote plays. This is my script.
WHO IS WHO?
Creon/Polynices= Scar (Leader of Pride Rock)
Eurydice= Zira (Scar’s mate)
Haemon= Nuka (Scar and Zira’s son)
Antigone = Sarafina [Nala’s Mother] (goes against leader)
Ismene = Sarabi (supports rebel, but does not assist in rebellion)
Eteocles = Mufasa (DEAD)
Messenger = Banzai (tells Leader of rebel)
Sentry = Shenzi (brings rebel to leader)
Cast of Characters
Scar
Zira
Nuka
Sarafina
Nala [cub]
Nala [Young adult]
Sarabi
Simba
Banzai
Shenzi
Ed
Lionesses
Hyenas
Scene One:
The lionesses weep, their beloved Mufasa is dead and Simba has disappeared, likely dead just as his father. They are gathered around Pride Rock, where Scar sits on top, giving his speech. It is dark and gloomy, reflecting their mood. There is only one cub among the group, Nala. She’s openly weeping over the loss of her best friend and betrothed, Simba.
Scar: Mufasa's death was a terrible tragedy; but to lose Simba, who had barely begun to live... For me it is a deep and personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era in which lion and hyena come together in a great and glorious future!
Hyenas: (Laughing)
Lionesses: (Gasp, then murmur uncertainly around each other as the hyenas surround them)
Sarabi: Scar! You can’t do this!
Scar: I can do what I want, Sarabi, I am king now! (chuckling slightly, sort of in an evil manner)
Sarabi: Mufasa would have never allowed it!
Scar: (stops and glares at Sarabi, leaning in) You will NEVER speak that name around me again! (calms down slightly) Is that clear?
Sarabi: (angrily) Yes, your majesty (slightly sarcastic)
Hyenas: (sit around lionesses, expectant looks on their faces)
Shenzi: Well, what’cha waitn’ for? We’re starving!
Banzai: Yeah, how come you’re all here yappin’ and not out there getting us food!
Sarafina: (angrily) Who are you to order us around?
Scar: (In mock forgetfulness) Oh, and did I forget to mention that the hyenas answer directly to me? I’m afraid they’re in charge, ladies.
Ed: (nods foolishly, giggling)
Lionesses: (slowly walk off stage, in a group)
Nala, Sarabi and Sarafina are left on the stage, Scar and the hyenas have left, though the laughs and barks can be heard for a while after they disappear from sight.
Nala: Mother, I miss him already.
Sarafina: Hush, Nala, I miss them too.
Sarabi: We must go on. The future is all we have to look forward to.
(All exit)
End Scene
Scene Two
The lionesses have all gone out hunting, forced to find food by the hyenas and Scar. It is late in the day, and the sun is hot and bright. For the most part, the lionesses hunt alone, so slowly they leave the stage. Sarabi and Sarafina stay together; Nala has wandered off with another lioness. The two lionesses do not start the hunt immediately, instead Sarabi checks around for hyena’s or spies of Scar. When she is assured that the area is safe, she turns to Sarafina with a worried look.
Sarabi: I miss them, Sarafina (in a sad, whispering voice)
Sarafina: I know, I know. I miss them too, but it’s been really hard on Nala (trying to comfort Sarabi)
Sarabi: I can’t forget about them, not either of them. Mufasa… he was the bravest lion I’ve ever met.
Sarafina: Sarabi! Don’t say his name, Scar might kill you! (panicked)
Sarabi: I might as well be dead! I’ve lost everything, my mate, my son… my only son… (begins to cry)
Sarafina: Oh, don’t say that! You have me, you have the rest of the lionesses. You are still a queen, Sarabi, don’t let this whole thing take that from you.
Sarabi: (bitterly) I lost my throne when I lost them.
Sarafina: …That’s true, but you can’t lose your grace. We need you as our queen now more than ever. The lionesses still look to you as their leader, more so than Scar. Don’t leave us, please.
Sarabi: I couldn’t leave, even if I wanted.
Sarafina: Thank you.
(moment of awkward silence)
Sarabi: Well, we need to hunt. If not for the hyenas’, then for ourselves.
(Both lionesses exit)
End Scene
Scene Three
The lionesses have returned to Pride Rock, and have made a pile of antelope near the base. The hyenas immediately snatch up the carcasses and fight over the meat, the lionesses left with nothing. One lioness seems ready to fight for her share of the meal, but Sarabi stops her with a simple gesture and a look. All of the lionesses are uneasy, and Scar has done nothing to give them their fair share.
Sarabi: (shouts angrily) Scar!
Scar: (annoyed) What could you *possibly* want?
Sarabi: The lionesses have had nothing to eat.
Scar: And whose fault is that?
Sarabi: The hyenas-
Banzai: (cutting off Sarabi) Hey, not our fault if they didn’t catch enough!
Hyenas: (laugh)
Sarabi: (glares at Scar) We caught enough for a meal, not a feast.
Shenzi: Well, we’re feastin’, so y’all better do some more huntin’!
Hyenas: (laugh again)
Scar: Apparently, you did not catch enough. Not my problem, dearie.
Sarabi: If you were half the lion Mufa-
Scar: (angry) I’ve told you, that name will NEVER be spoken in my presence. No, not in the whole Pridelands! That is your second strike, Sarabi, third strike is out. (smiles deviously)
Sarafina: (whispers) Come on, Sarabi, we’re going hunting again.
Scar: Oh, and a new Royal Decree: Only the King may reside in the cave in the Rock. The hyenas shall stay under the shelf of rock, the sheltered part.
Sarabi: And the lionesses?
Scar: (shrugs) Wherever else you can find, but it must be near Pride Rock, no exceptions.
Sarafina: What do you expect us to do, sleep outside?
Scar: If it comes to that, so be it.
Lionesses: (Ad lib, begin to protest in shouts or cries of ‘but-‘ ‘that’s not fair!’ or similar)
Sarabi: (lionesses silence when she speaks) Quiet! We’ll just have to make do…
End scene
Scene Four
Much time has passed since the last scene, the lionesses are thinner and the hyenas fatter. Scar, Zira and their son Nuka can be seen together, all smiling in a devious looking way. Nala is no longer a cub, and is among the lionesses, who have just returned from a somewhat successful hunt. They have a few carcasses that the hyenas immediately grab and run away with, fighting among themselves. Unease is among the lionesses, and Scar has noticed as such.
Shenzi: Hey, Banzai, Ed, come ‘ere. Looks like the kitties forgot something very important on their little hunt.
Banzai: (came over while Shenzi talked)Oh-ho-ho! Now how could they ever forget something like that?
Ed: (unintelligible giggling and gibberish)
Sarafina: And what would it be that we’ve forgotten? (hint of a snarl)
Shenzi: Why, the King and his family, of course!
Sarabi: Zira is more than able to hunt. She’s a lioness too, isn’t she?
Banzai: Well, she’s the Queen! So go on, now, hunt!
Lionesses: (mutter among themselves, but leave the stage slowly. Sarabi, Shenzi and Nala are still on stage when Scar speaks)
Scar: (Before all leave) Wait, Sarafina, Nala, I want to speak with you.
Sarabi: Will you both be okay?
Sarafina: Yes, we’re fine. Now go before you get in trouble!
Scar: Sarafina! Nala! (they both walk up to Scar, Zira and Nuka have left for the time being)
Sarafina: Yes, Scar?
Scar: You’ve seen my Nuka, my son. You know he’s the heir to the throne, the future king. Your Nala is a pretty little lioness and he’s taken a liking to the girl. Now, I’m sure you both won’t mind if we… arrange a little betrothal between the two?
Nala: What?! Mother, you can’t-
Sarafina: Hush, Nala. Scar, you can’t expect me to promise my daughter to a lion she hardly knows!
Scar: I’m not asking you that, Sarafina, I’m asking you to promise her to the future king. You’re guaranteeing her a happy future.
Sarafina: Or one filled with misery!
Scar: If you do not accept this proposition, you will wish you had.
Sarafina: Is that a threat?
Scar: Oh-ho-ho, you sound like my late brother, the fool. No, it’s not a threat, it’s a promise.
Nala: Mother-
Sarafina: Nala, quiet. Scar, we shall… consider this. Please, give us time. It’s not a light decision for a mother to make.
Scar: Very well. You have three days, then I expect your answer. (Scar exits)
Nala: Mother, I’ll never be Nuka’s queen, not as long as I live.
Sarafina: I know, dear, I know. We need to talk to Sarabi.
End Scene
Scene Five
That same evening, the lionesses are gathered in a small cave near Pride Rock. Sarabi, Sarafina and Nala are huddled In a group talking about the ultimatum given by Scar. The rest of the lionesses are gossiping, talking or sleeping.
Nala: -And then he threatened Mother!
Sarabi: Oh, great Kings, what did he do?
Sarafina: Nothing really, he just told me I’d regret it.
Sarabi: Had it been like it was in the old days, I’d tell you not to worry. But now a-days, Scar is dangerous. The hyenas attacked Uru today, I don’t know if she’ll pull through.
Sarafina: So what should we do? We can’t promise Nala to a family like that!
Nala: I won’t do it, either!
Sarabi: No, of course not, dear. How long do you have?
Sarafina: Three days, I don’t know if today counts.
Sarabi: Let’s assume it does. Either way, we need to get Nala out of here by the end of tomorrow.
Sarafina: But how? No one’s allowed to leave the Pridelands-
Nala: Or enter it.
Sarabi: I have an idea.
Nala and Sarafina: What?!
Sarabi: Sshh! Keep quiet! (glances around suspiciously) Alright, we’re three lionesses, no one would question a late-night hunting patrol, would they?
Sarafina: No, I wouldn’t think so…
Nala: And if they did, we could tell them that Scar or Zira or one of the hyenas had complained of hunger!
Sarafina: Anyone could believe that!
Sarabi: And while we’re out, we can slip Nala out of the Pridelands and she can run and seek out help for us or just save herself. Either way, it’s foolproof!
Sarafina: Sarabi, you are a genious!
Nala: I promise, I’ll find someone to help. My father is out there somewhere, so is a few rogues who might be willing to help.
Sarafina: That’s my girl!
End scene
Scene Six
Sarabi, Sarafina and Nala are out on their escape plan the next night. It is dark and the moon is but a sickle in the sky, not unlike a lion’s claw. The three are jumpy, but hopeful
Sarabi: We’re almost to the end of the Pridelands.
Sarafina: Sarabi, I can’t ask you to go any further than this. Scar has two grudges against you, you heard him. Third and you’re out!
Sarabi: Sarafina, I want to help!
Sarafina: I can’t let you do that, you’re too important to the lionesses for that. Please go, Sarabi, or I will make you.
Sarabi: Very well, my friend, but it hurts me.
Nala: Thank you, Sarabi. I’ll never forget all you’ve done for me.
Sarabi: It was my pleasure.
Sarafina: Now go! I think I hear hyenas coming, and take this zebra leg too, it’ll be a good cover story at Pride Rock
Sarabi: Good luck, may the great Kings bless you!
Sarafina and Nala: And you! (they walk on a bit more)
Sarafina: There, this is the edge of our territory. Out there is a desert, but there is an oasis if you can find it. I was there once when I was younger…
Nala: Thank you, Mother. I’ll bring help, I promise. (they hug and Nala runs off stage)
Sarafina: I believe in you, my daughter.
Suddenly, there is a loud giggling of hyenas and Sarafina is surrounded by a pack of them.
Shenzi: What’s this? A little escape trick? Scar’s gonna just love this!
Banzai: Oh, yeah, it’s a story he’ll just sink his teeth into! (hyena’s laugh)
Shenzi: Oh, wait, I got a good one! It’s a real heart-stopper!
Banzai: Oh-ho-ho! That’s not bad!
Hyenas lead Sarafina offstage.
End scene
Scene Seven
Sarafina is standing between two hyena guards, Scar has called everyone together to witness the trial of this traitor to the crown, trying to escape her duties and aiding in a rebellion conspiracy.
Scar: The lioness you see here is charged with treason, purposely breaking laws I had to carefully set in place to maintain order in the Pridelands. She is a menace to our society and a danger to you all. What do you have to say for yourself, Sarafina?
Sarafina: I saved her from being a slave and a puppet of yours, Scar, how could I ever regret that?
Sarabi: Wait, stop this! It’s not her fault, it’s all mine! It was my plan, my idea! Don’t hurt her!
Sarafina: She’s lying. It was all me, she is only trying to protect me.
Scar: Is that so? Well, Sarabi is a smart lioness, and already having two strikes, I’m sure she would not be a fool enough to add a third. And speaking of strikes, let’s tally yours up, shall we? Let’s see, treason, that’s one. Assisting a fellow in leaving the Pridelands without permission, that’s two. And using my brother’s name, that’s three.
Sarafina: When did I ever say Mufasa’s name?
Scar: Just now. Kill her.
The hyenas jump on Sarafina, and laughing and barking, she disappears from sight, devoured by them. Sarabi’s sobs can be heard as Sarafina screams.
End Scene
Scene Eight
It is many weeks later, the lioness’s spirits are nearly broken and everyone is facing famine. Scar is angrier than ever.
Scar: Sarabi!
Sarabi: (approaches him slowly, up the aisle of hyenas who snap at her. Yet she retains a graceful, queen-like stature) Yes, Scar?
Scar: Where is the food?
Sarabi: The river has dried up, the water hole is empty. There is no food left. We must move or starve.
Scar: We’re staying here, this is my kingdom.
Sarabi: Then you have sentenced us all to death!
Scar: So be it! I am King-
Sarabi: If you were half the King Mufasa was-
Scar: (slaps Sarabi across the face, knocking her to the ground) I told you, never use that name again!
Simba: (appears from a corner of the stage, like a ghost) Scar!
Scar: Mufasa?! No, it can’t be- You’re dead!
Simba runs over to his mother, Sarabi, checking to see if she’s okay.
Sarabi: Mufasa?
Simba: No, it’s me.
Sarabi: Simba..? You’re alive?
