What I needed
Prologue
I walk, out of my old life into a new one. Maybe a disaster was what I needed to reach a point where I felt myself strong and proud. No wave can knock me down. I’m no longer glass, I’m steel. I can withstand anything.
I sit down on the porch step. I look at my surroundings. The clouds, they are large storm clouds. Something is not right. I can feel rain, it slowly drums. Then it starts to come down in buckets. The wind picks up and blows my hair around. A loud siren calls in the darkness telling a warning. It paints a picture, a picture worth one word R-U-N!
My heart pounds as I run into my scared sister. Her blue eyes are wide and asking me to help her. All I can do is pick her up and run into the towel closet. My younger brother is already there; he hugs our cat and holds his blanket. I hold my siblings in close, the cat burrows in my lap. I wait for it; brace myself, for the coming storm.
“Lexi!” My sister cries as the wind comes closer. I hug my family closer, asking for it to take me and not my cat, or my sister, or my brother. Just take me I silently plead to the winds. I was at the mercy of the storm, now.
Chapter #1
I kick a tin can at a wall. The can hits it with a bang and the wall comes to the ground. A tornado did this to my town. Just one EF4. I want to cry into the dirt, dust and ashes, but I need to stay strong for my siblings. Jessica is wailing, Finn is nibbling on the corners of his blanket, and the cat knows better and is sticking close to me. Finn looks up at me from his shaggy brown bangs “What did this.”
I look at my brother, stumped by his question. I don’t want him to be afraid of a rainstorm or sunshine. I lied “Some naughty kid stole a diamond from the jewelry shop; the diamond was a monster’s. The monster was angry and stormed the city.”
I hear a cry from my sister, she was a yard away. My gaze drifts to where she is pointing, and I rush to her side.
