The wolves are calling you home,
Their voices, wild and primal echo into the night
‘Run with us Brother!’ they beckon you,
Will you answer the call?
My bedroom window was open. How?
I had closed it before I went to sleep.
Did it matter?
No.
I could hear it,
The beating of the drums,
A constant rhythm, thrumming in harmony with my heart.
I wanted to be out there.
I wanted to let my soul run free.
Free me my brothers.
Help me shed this human skin.
Call me out into the moonlight.
Teach me how to dance.
Closer, closer.
I can hear them outside thy window.
The trees hushed whisper, alerting presence.
My heart races.
They are coming.
A howl, a click of claws on wood.
Out of bed, before I can blink.
At my window, I do stand and stare.
Wild gold eyes meet mine.
I am lost.
Take me.
We are in the forest.
One mortal surrounded by a pack of wolves.
For indeed, their ghostly voices sing otherworldly.
I should be scared.
I should run screaming for home.
I don't.
Alpha before me, down I kneel.
Leader, decided, Judged of Fate.
My life is his to decide.
A graze on the cheek, a greeting, a welcome.
I am his, I am welcome.
I am pack.
The alpha howls
The pack runs
The alpha leads, the alpha always leads.
I am human, but they don't care.
I race them and they let me win.
We run together.
I am changing.
I feel it in my flying mind, in my pounding feet.
In my all too human heart.
My bones snap, I feel no pain.
My skin melts, I notice nothing.
My body changes and reforms.
The wolves howl with joy, I howl with them.
I am wolf.
My pelt gleams in the moonlight.
Fur of black and amber.
A hear that yearns from freedom of human imprisonment.
Humans eyes in a wolf skull.
Reminders of what I once was.
What I am destined to become once more.
But until the sun rises, I am wolf.
The reckless spirit that can never be tamed.
It is sunrise.
I wake in my bed, how did I get here?
My clothes are torn, mud adorns every part of my body.
I am scratched and bruised, my body ache.
But my heart is soaring.
I remember.
I am wolf, I am free.
Remember me.
That night, the wolves call me home again.
Their voices, wild and primal echo into the night.
'Run with us Brother!' they beckon you.
