Fauna; the animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period. That’s what it used to mean. Decades have passed since that word meant anything like that. Now Fauna are the creatures that have taken over our world. Society’s main purpose has now been warped into a fixation of wiping the beasts off the face of this unholy earth.
There are two kinds of Fauna. Pitch Fauna, those who devour our colonies like ravaging serpents. Whether a Pitch devours you whole or takes you away to feast for it's colony is completely debatable for the beast itself. Then there are Lambent Fauna, species created by man to fight back against the Pitch. Lambent Fauna have been the Brigade’s partners for centuries. Created from the fragment of slayed Pitch, they were modified to suit man’s purpose.
For centuries our people haven’t been able to figure out how Pitch Fauna repopulate, for they have no physical DNA remnants nor the reproductive organs to reproduce. There have been witnessed though and have said they can possess the bodies of regular creatures, specifically wild animals. They devour their host’s soul hole and claim rights to their hollow body.

“It’s not a fleabag!” Rook called. The young 10 year old boy frowned. He had ruffled black hair and amber eyes. A scar protruded over his left eyebrow. “Its name is Alto for your information.” He raised an eyebrow. Rook started into his father’s blue gaze. Vale, Vale Frost to be exact. Age 28 and top rank member of the Fauna Brigade, said to be able to rip a Fauna’s head off with his bare hands. Although that was probably rumors he made up himself.
“Looks like one to me. Where did you get that thing anyways?” Vale questioned. “I found him..” He shrugged. “He’s a dog, he’s my pet.” Rook narrowed his eyes. “Whatever, I’m going to see Leika. She’ll think he’s cool!” He opened the door and slammed it shut. “C’mon Alto!” He called and the dog ran after him. Soon enough the young boy reached his friend’s house. “LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIKA!?” He called loudly as he knocked on the door.
A young 9 year old girl opened the door slowly. She had light brown hair with a cream streak. Her green eyes blinked in curiosity. “Oh, hey Rook!” She called back with a nod in greeting. “Who’s that?”
“Alto.” He replied. “My new dog. I found him hungry wandering the streets.”

This is later on I got bored of the part above and had muse to describe this part I thought of.
The dog’s body shifted black. Its legs morphing to longer, nimbler limbs. Its tail grew longer in an almost salamander-like shape. Its pupils dilated and turned a yellow-amber color. Its teeth sharpened and its muzzle elongated. A gray flame illuminated its tail. Its ears grew larger like that of a large dog or fox. It let out an enraged cry and swung its tail at the Brigade violently. “A-Alto..” Rook cried. So this was the capability of the Fauna. He had never seen them perform the act of taking over their hostage. That was rarely seen actually. It only ever happened in the hours of moonhigh. But right now Rook could care less about timing and this whole scene. His dog had been sacrificed to the beasts his people had been fighting for decades. “Altooo!?” He cried once more. A member of the brigade grabbed him by the waist and kept him at a resist. Rook struggled to get out of the grip, flinging his arms towards the Fauna. “Give him back! Give him back!” He hollered, tears streaming down his eyes.
The brigade with a signal from their leader pointed their pistols at the beast. Rook mumbled something about mercy but it was barely audible. He bit the man’s hand and broke free of the grip. He launched himself towards the Pitch Fauna. He broke the necklace off his neck and jabbed the beast with the key. A large combustion of light arose from the area that it could clearly be seen from town.
When the light began to fade dust clouds were soon present. The Pitch Fauna remained the same in appearance, still snarling but not touching a hair on Rook, who was less than a foot away. The beast snarled at the men with guns. It grabbed Rook by the scruff of his shirt and tossed him onto his back. It soon vanished as it ran towards town. The troops blinked in confusion but when their leader signaled for them to move on they followed the two towards the town.
The beast crashed through the window of Rook’s house. Vale was home and he lifted a brow but otherwise seemed unfazed. “My my.. What do we have here?” He questioned.
