Brightflame yawned sleepily and rose slowly from his nest. He smiled a bittersweet smile at the bundle by his bed. It had been a gift from Falconwing. A smooth stone from their special place bundled with his favorite flowers: snowdrops, some marigolds and a tuft of Falconwing's fur. Bright was still sad about his death, but the clan still neededhealing. Speaking of which...He stretched sleepily and padded over to the herb store. This was mainly out of routine, he had memorized how much they needed to collect today. Checking obsessively once more confirmed that they were low on borage, marigolds and horsetail. Giggling childishly, he took a small clump of moss between his teeth and wet it in the small pool of water theyhad. Slowly and quietly he snuck over to Waterheart's nest...and...PRESSED IT AGAINST WATERHEART'S NECK!!!

Waterheart felt a press on his neck. He grumpily woke himself up to see Brightflame patting him with moss. He woke up and streched his legs. "Why'd you have to wake me up? I was have a wonderful dream, and I get woken up from moss being poked at my throat." Waterheart walked over to the herb store and noticed it seemed rather empty. Waterheart faced Brightflame, "Were you trying to point that out to me? I get it, let's go re-stock."

Brightflame nodded, "We haven't gotten herbs together in forever. I had to con poor innocent apprentices and warriors into helping me." He said pitifully. Giggling and bouncing over enthusiastically, he stopped next to the slightly larger Med. Cat and surveyed the warm, bustling camp. "And then we can finally have that whole chat you promised when I was named a warrior." He said this quietly, almost darkly, his normally bright and loving eyes shadowed with something... "Anyways," Their shine quickly returned, "We had better get going. There's a lot to do and we only have so much time to do it!"

Waterheart nodded, "Yes, there's much to do and we only have so much daylight." Waterheart led Brightflame to the normal place they gathered their supplies. He found a marigold bush and started to collect. He took this time to recall what was just said. Even the look in Brightflame's eyes tell me he's still upset about how I've been uncaring to him. Waterheart knew he was a father figure to his apprentice, yet it seemed he hadn't truly been one for so long. I really need to apologize to him for everything one day. He was proud of how far his apprentice had come. Brightflame had pretty much ran the clan single pawed for so long!
Waterheart gathered enough marigold and turned around to Brightflame. "We have our Marigold, what's next? You know this area top to bottom."

Brightflame paused, laying the bundle of marigolds at his feet. He looked around the sun dappled clearing, savoring the feeling of cool sunlight. "Borage." He said absent mindedly. His head was swimming with memories of watching Waterheart collect herbs here. After his father left Waterheart was the one he spent all his time with. It was no wonder that after his mate and best friend left aswell he became Waterheart's apprentice and a flaming h- "Borage!" He said, quickly clearing his head of all thought and bounding in the direction of the largest borage cluster. (WOO I TYPED IT ON THE BUS LIKE A BOSS)

(somethings came up haha, sorry. Just gonna post something on my phone to keep it going. I'll be on my laptop in like an hour.)
Waterheart followed Brightflame to the borage. "Well-spotted!" He began to collect the borage with his apprentice.

(Maximum effort then.) Brightflame twitched an ear thoughtfully. He obviously had a lot going through hishead at the moment. He sighed and began pulling the starchy leaves off the plant. (Besides I always reply on my phone so there.)

Waterheart noticed something seemed to be upsetting Brightflame. I promised him a talk a while back, maybe it's time then. Waterheart looked around the clearing and saw that the place was empty. He stopped going through the borage to face Brightflame. "Brightflame, is there anything you want to talk about? I know I have a lot to explain to you and things have just seemed....off lately. You know if there's anything you want to talk about, I'm all ears." At this, Waterheart sat down, positioning himself comfortably.

Brightflame stopped and turned to Waterheart, sitting across from him. "You were the one who was there for me when my parents disappeared. I spent almost every day with you unconsciously learning the herbs and techniques to become a Medicine Cat. When Blazefoot and Bluestream left, I turned to you but you were becoming distant. And then just now, when I needed you more than I ever have, you weren't there! You're the only cat I have left in my life...and now I'm not even sure I do have you!" He let it all pour out, everything he had been keeping in.

Waterheart sighed, letting Brightflame's words sink in. He felt the harsh tone and the truthful words. "You're right on many levels. You trained so well as an apprentice, and when you became a warrior I was proud of you. The countless hours you spent memorizing herbs and such with almost no disdain. I know I became distant to you, and that's something I regret. You grew up so much in that time I wasn't there for you, and it's made you into the great cat you are today. I'm not sure I'll be ever to actually explain what happened or why, but understand I never meant to get away from you."

Brightflame sighed and looked up, his eyes brimming with tears. "Hey um...I...um..." he swallowed thickly, thinking of something he hadn't thought of in years. He had given up on Blazefoot or Bluestream ever returning. That thought made his heart ache with loss, but there was still some hope. "Um...you and my parents...they were kinda your acquaintances, right? Do you...Um...maybe know where they went or um...why they never...came back?"

Waterheart sighed, taking time to recollect his past. He had not done so in a while, in fact he was still only a warrior when he had truly thought about it. "Well, as you know, I wasn't always a medicine cat. My parents, Flamestrike and Angelfur, were well acquainted with your parents. One day, I woke up and Flamestrike was nowhere to be found. They think he ran off somewhere far. I never was able to figure out what truly happened or even say goodbye." Waterheart seemed to stiffen up for a moment, but then continued. "My mother had never seemed to have gotten over that. She left the clan and became a rogue named Hydra. I did, however, get the chance to say goodbye to her. No cat has heard from her since though." Waterheart sighed, realizing it had been many seasons since that had happened.
"I began my training after with Firestorm to become a medicine cat, and I actually was able to see you grow up from a kit to what you are now. Bluestream and Bluefoot cared for you so much Brightflame. The day they went missing in the clan, everycat tried to find them, but they were no were to be found. I knew how you felt, so I watched carefully over you and was very excited when I found out you were to become my apprentice. And, you know the rest. What I'm saying is, we can't stop certain things from happening in our lives. However, things have a weird way of always coming around."
Waterheart felt like a weight was lifted off his chest. He knew there was still much to be talked about, but he was glad to get that out of the way.

Bright looked down at his paws, the cold ground numbing them. He shivered, "It just feels like every time I have to go somewhere, I come back and someone I care about is missing or dead." His voice was slightly bitter, and this was when he realized something. He didn't just blame himself for the death of Falconwing, he blamed Waterheart. What was Waterheart doing while Falconwing lay there dying? What was the point of having two Medicine Cats if one couldn't help the clan while the other was gone!? He looked at Waterheart with a steady gaze, "You could have saved him. You could have saved all of them. Why didn't you?" His voice had almost no emotion in it, just a twinge of pain.

(ooooo) Waterheart looked at Brightflame, with nothing but regret in his face. "That situation, all of it, not just Falconwing, was just a mess. That was something you shouldn't have had to experience. That was just way too much, even for myself. There was nothing I could do, it was too late by the time I would have been able to do anything. I wish I had acted sooner, and maybe we'd be having a different conversation right now."
Waterheart hung his head in sadness. "I regret not doing anything soon enough, I truly do."

Brightflame began to tremble slightly, "I...I can't believe this...I..." He squeezed his eyes shut, "If I hadn't left...none of this would've happened...I could have saved him. Saved all of them..." his voice was strained, "There's a reason for there being two Medicine Cats, and...And I guess I had to learn that the hard way..." Brightflame dug his claws into the hard ground, stripping out clumps of grass, "Or maybe I should have just stayed a warrior...then none of this would have happened. Maybe you could have been assigned a better apprentice than me..."
(Yea self pity woo Ahaha I'm gonna go make more cheesecake.)
