It was very early in the morning, but Batkit couldn't sleep. Unable to stay in the nursery when he had energy to spend, the young tom slipped into the cold clearing before making his way over to the warriors' den. Maybe messing with some cats would tire him out.

Entering the den, he stepped on someone's tail almost immediately, recoiling as he reprimanded himself for being careless.

Tanglepelt had been sleeping, her mind in a dream about hunting in the rivers and the rocks of IceClan. The ginger and white tabby she-cat woke to someone stepping on her tail. The senior warrior sat up, growling.

"Watch it!"

Unfortunately, he seemed to have awoken the slumbering she-cat. So much for playing pranks on the cats while they were still sleeping.

"Sorry," the kitten muttered. He was pretty sure that he'd get yelled at for being in the warriors' den now. What a way to start the morning.

Tanglepelt turned her head around to stare at the cat who had stepped on her tail. She narrowed her gaze at the kit. Why was he in here?

"What are you doing in here?"

Batkit didn't particularly feel like making up an excuse this time. "I felt like walking in here and seeing how many different color tails I could trod on before I got caught," he deadpanned. It wasn't exactly true, but it amused him.

The senior warrior snorted at the tom's explanation. But, she did soften slightly.

"Well, that's not a great idea. Some of the warriors are grumpier than I am."

"What else do you expect me to do?" he asked. "I'm bored out of my skin. It's more interesting to get lectured than to practice my imitation of a rock in the nursery."

[Tanglepelt]

At the rock imitation, she laughed softly, flicking her tail.

"I suppose I should know better. I was like that as I kit."

[Deleted]

Batkit twitched one of his ears slightly. "Isn't everyone? It's not as if the queens can pay attention to each and every kitten, so we're left to find ways to entertain ourselves for six moons."

[Tanglepelt]

Tanglepelt grunted.

"Speaking of the queens, which one is your mother? Oh, and I am Tanglepelt. What do they call you?"

He supposed that he could get along with this warrior, at least well enough to share some personal information with her. She wasn't obnoxious like many of the other cats.

"My name is Batkit, and I don't come from here. My parents were loners; they brought me here when I was a moon old because they couldn't take care of me through leaf-bare."

Tanglepelt gave a small grunt. So another outsider? Those have become quite common in the clans recently. She was surprised the leaders even let them join.

"Well, nice to meet you, Batkit."

He could tell that the warrior wasn't exactly enthusiastic about his non-IceClan blood. At least she wasn't snapping at him about it, though. Batkit expected to gain a few enemies in the future if others found out about his heritage.

"So I take it you're not going to lecture me about being in here, then?" the Birman asked with a small grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Tanglepelt shrugged, shaking her head.

"Nah. You're the second kit that's been in here, though."

"Only the second? I'd have expected for the curiosity of many other kits to get the better of them. Who was the first, then?" Batkit tilted his head slightly to one side, awaiting an answer.
