I padded up to the leader's den, remembering Hawkstar with a pang. He had been a good friend to me, but no doubt, Cloverstar would be just as good as a friend and leader as Hawkstar had been.
I meowed a greeting through the lichen. "Cloverstar? Are you in there?" I didn't know if she was eating or napping, but it was a medicine cat's responsibility to take care of the Clan leader. I had to check up on every single cat in the Clan at least once a week to make sure that they were okay. And the warriors thought they had it tough...

After a long day, Cloverstar had been dozing on and off in the leader's den in an effort to get more rest. Just when she'd finally fallen asleep, she heard a voice. Grumbling, she blinked her eyes open and looked up. It took a moment for her to register who it was.
"Snakefang?" She sat up, squinting slightly. "Uh...that's you, right? Yes, I'm here. Anything you need?"

"It is my duty to check on the leader of the Clan," I dipped my head respectfully to the leader. "I do believe that we haven't met properly. At least, as far as I can remember." I frowned for a moment, thinking. Had we met each other? The past few days had been very busy, as Sunblaze and I had been out collecting herbs. With newleaf here, the herbs were growing back, nice and fresh.
"Anyways, how do you feel?" I asked, trying to refocus myself. "Any feeling of sickness? Headache? Belly ache?"
I remembered something else, but I didn't want to press anymore onto Cloverstar's shoulders. She had enough being the new leader.

Cloverstar blinked. Yep, it was Snakefang. She tried to remember if he was right about them not having met. She'd seen him around, sure, but that seemed to be it. Come to think of it, she hadn't seen a lot of him the past several days, though she hadn't thought too much of it at the time. She wondered absentmindedly what he thought of the flowers and buds she'd strung around the den on vines; they gave the place more of a comfortable atmosphere in her opinion, but then again, she was probably in a minority when it came to den decorating. She certainly hadn't heard of any other leaders who had made any modifications to the den that was passed down among them.
She shook her head. "Oh...I'm okay. It's fine. I'll let you know if I start feeling otherwise."
The she-cat paused, a little hesitant about her next question. Had he been around when Hawkstar had been made leader? "Did you do this for Hawkstar, too?" she asked.

"I did. It is the medicine cat's duty to check on the leader of course," I said. "And everyone else in the Clan." I sat down. "Listen. Now that we've met, Cloverstar, the medicine cats are here to help guide you. If you ever feel like you need any guidance or anything, well, that's what Sunblaze and me are here for." I looked around the den. There were flowers strung up on vines.
'That's new,' I thought. 'Looks nice. I'm impressed.'
Then I looked back at Cloverstar. "We'll be next to you whenever you need it. Now, back to point, would you like anything? Fresh-kill? Water?"

"Ah..." Cloverstar nodded awkwardly, not sure what exactly to say in response. Just a "thank you" seemed inadequate for the situation. "Yes, I know. But thank you anyway."
With inopportune timing, her stomach gave a growl not loud enough to be heard by anyone but herself, but loud enough for her to know what it meant. She blanched, only to straighten up almost immediately when Snakefang continued to speak. "What? Fresh-kill? Oh, uh, it's alright," she said sheepishly, ignoring the increasingly hollow feeling in her stomach. "I mean, you don't have to trouble yourself with it. The pile's not that far from my den."
Great, she inwardly groaned. He probably thinks Hawkstar was crazy to pick me as leader. I'm so bad at this, I think I set a record for future RockClan leaders.
