Ashpaw bumbled sideways as she padded out of the medicine den. “Morning Maplewing.” she greeted as she walked past the medicine cat. Being medicine cat apprentice, It was her duties to come out and check on sick cats that had left the medicine cat den for food or to talk. She spotted Mudtail, and, Knowing he was sick, Padded over. “Morning Mudtail.” She greeted the dark brown warrior with pleasure. “Need any medicine, Like mint?” She meowed. The tom only shook his head and she sighed. “Alright.”
“All cats gather 'round highrock for a clan meeting!” Darkstar yowled across the camp. Many cats filed out of their dens, one by one. Ashpaw joined the group of her fellow apprentices and sat next to Diamondpaw. “Hello Diamondpaw.” she meowed. “Morning, Ashpaw!” Diamondpaw meowed in her always cheery voice. “I heard Darkstar is appointing a new deputy today!” She said happily. 'I wonder who it will be since Doveflight passed.”
“Me too...” Ashpaw said with a sigh. “I know it has been a while since Doveflight died in the paws of Owlstar, And that it is clan custom to appoint a new deputy before Moonhigh, But now I will appoint this deputy. I know she is my sister and you probably think that's why I'm making her deputy, But it's because she's a quick thinker and an amazing cat. Maplewing, I know you are a medicine cat, But Ashpaw has learned to be a fine young medicine cat, And I am asking you to bring her to the moonpool for her to earn her name, Then become my deputy.” He meowed straightly. Maplewing looked shocked, But only nodded.
CHAPTER 2 Ashpaw's Fate
Ashpaw's paws trembled as she stepped up to the moonpool and dipped her paw in. She then touched her nose to the pool and fell in a deep sleep. Shadowstep, An old medicine cat, Appeared in her dreams. “Ashpaw, It is your time to learn that you're destined to do great. I wish for you to accept your destiny as a medicine cat and to earn your name as Ashcloud.” The she said, Her eyes suddenly beginning to turn white. “Clouds of ash will create the night air tasting of mint, soothing the darkened stars and crushing the leaves of the maple tree.” The figure then turned to black and faded away as Ashcloud woke up. “So, Ashpaw, How did I go?” Maplewing said, Rushing her apprentice up. “My new name is Ashcloud, Maplewing.” She said with a purr. “Ashcloud Maplewing?” Maplewing joked. “That's a strange name.”
Back at camp, Darkstar was on the highrock, sleeping under the stars, Though his den was only next to the rock. He was snoring silently, The noises of the night covering up the rest of the snores from the dens. She padded into the medicine den as Maplewing parted into the warriors den. Dawnclaw and Bluestripe guarded the entrance of the camp, But as Ashcloud went to step into the medicine den, A loud noise stirred Darkstar awake.
