There was a bit of a chill that morning, nipping at the paws of cats that dared walk outside their cozy dens. Petalfur, being one that had thicker pads on her paws, didn't feel anything besides the wind in her fur, the fat mouse in her jaws, and huge clumps of moss under her chin and between her toes of her front paws. The Bengal set the moss on the inside of the Elder's den as she padded in. She had made a promise to one of the newer Elders, Maplefrost, to help out in the Elder's den since the apprentices didn't do so, and it was her round for some den cleaning. Petalfur had caught the mouse while out with one of her friends and former to-be mate, Tigerpaw, and decided to bring it to Maplefrost as a little gift. "Hey, Grumpyfrost," Petalfur meowed in a sweet, mocking voice as she set the mouse at her paws. "You hungry?"

At the present moment, Maplefrost was just about the furthest thing from grumpy. That wasn't to say that he was happy. Since the deaths of Redstorm and Shadefrost, the calico elder had felt hollow. He did not grieve; rather, he made an attempt to stifle all his emotions. What other option was there? Allowing himself to think about what he'd lost would be too much. So the tom tried in vain to pretend that everything was normal; his best friend and his mother were clearly still alive. Obviously.
Aaannd someone was barging right into his den. With Maplefrost curled up in a tight ball within his nest, Petalfur was left to set the prey down at his back. It didn't matter; he could still smell the food. "I don't want anything to eat," grunted the elder without moving. Now, this wasn't exactly true; he hadn't eaten for at least two days. But the idea of eating made him just feel nauseous. Maplefrost strongly hoped that this young warrior would do whatever she came to do, then promptly leave.

Petalfur frowned deeply. She knew Maplefrost had never been sweet to her, but something told her there was a different kind of unease in the air, something bitter like agony, but soft like dispair. She remembered that feeling herself, after her huge argument with her mate, Ashfrost, right before he left the clans, leaving her to feel responsible for his parting. Yet now that Petal and her mate were reunited and better than ever, she found it to be false. That in mind, she knew that, like always, she had to do something to cheer the tom up. "You know, you look like a squirrel curled up like that," she commented, bending to sniff Maplefrost's flank, which in her opinion, seemed rather thinner than the last time she saw him. Trick on lights? "Sit up and eat so I can soften your moss, will you?" Petalfur tried a smile, and also an attempt at a soft nudge with her paw, willing everything to be alright. She jsut couldn't stand to be in the middle of another bit of agony, not after having just spent the day with her second mate, Tigerpaw, trying to make up for choosing Ashfrost over him.

"Hrrrmph. I've never seen a calico squirrel before, have you?" Maplefrost supposed that he was probably fluffy enough to look like one of those tree-climbing rodents, with his thick pelt and dense plume of a tail. However, his fur was currently a bit ragged and unkempt in appearance, as if he hadn't been bothering to groom it.
The elder tensed slightly when he felt Petalfur sniffing him. Apparently she wasn't one for personal space. In response, he puffed up his fur just a bit, and attempted to curl into an even tighter ball.
He flicked an ear at the warrior's gentle command, still not moving. "Urgh. I told you, I'm not hungry. Who do you think you are, my mother?" Of course, Shadefrost was dead, so Petalfur obviously couldn't be her. Aaannnd now he was sad again.

Petalfur grunted to the calico squirrel comment, but just sat there instead of responding in a usual witty way. "Right now, since none of the apprentices are doing their duties, yeah, I have a divine right care for you," she retorted, responding to the growth of the volume of his fur by backing away a little. "Will you at least let me fix your nest? You probably have fleas in there." Without even waiting for a response, she turned and hooked the large ball of moss. Setting it aside, Petalfur clawed the moss around where Maplefrost was laying, piling it up into a meager mound.

A low growl rumbled in the elder's throat as Petalfur continued to chatter and prod. What a persistent cat! He already knew that his nest was full of fleas and ticks; he could feel some of them crawling around beneath his pelt. But he didn't particularly care enough to get mouse bile. That'd require going out into the camp, and there was no way he'd do that in his current state.
Maplefrost gave up and got to his paws, padding over to a corner of the den without looking at the warrior. If she was so determined to change his bedding, then whatever. He just wasn't in the mood to deal with anyone.

The she-cat ignored the growl like it was a leaf falling from the tree. It was real, yes, but it happened more often that one might think. Petalfur simply clawed at the bedding, determined to get the filthy moss cleaned off. When Maplefrost finally got up and moved enough for her to scrape all of the old parts of the nest away, Petalfur could have sworn she felt a tick find hold by her shoulder blade. I'll see if an apprentice actually wants to deal with that and Maplefrost's, she decided. "You seem awfully... well, different," Petalfur commented in a light, less pressuring way. "I don't even expect you to attempt clawing my fur off." Petalfur looked expectantly to the tom, kneading the new moss into the older to make it softer.

"Not in the mood," grunted Maplefrost from his corner. "Didn't you hear the news?" He assumed that Petalfur would already know what had happened. The murder of Shadefrost and Wingedpaw had been a big event. Likewise, word of Redstorm's sudden death should have gotten around the Clan by now. The elder sure didn't feel like explaining. Admitting that the two were gone would somehow make the situation more real, which was exactly what he was trying to avoid.

The Bengal shrugged, stepping back from the nest so Maplefrost could take back his throne if he wished. "I'm not much for gossip, and I was probably out hunting or patrolling and missed the announcement, if there was one," Petalfur replied, sitting back on her haunches. "That, or there's fluff in my ears. Not knowing every cat in this clan doesn't help, either." Was this news what had clung to Maplefrost and turned him into a soft, thin bag of skin and bones? Likely. It could be he was just trying to start a new conversation. "Is there a reason I should know this news?"

| You don't have to tag me, since I check my threads. But it doesn't matter. |
"There was no announcement. I just figured you'd already know that several of your Clanmates died over the past moon," stated Maplefrost in a flat and muffled tone. Had Petalfur really not heard about this? An apprentice, an elder, and a former queen; all gone. The calico hoped that Flamingthorn and Brightflame would be able to talk to the two who had been murdered while fighting the Ravens. He really hated that only medicine cats could speak with CloudClan; Maplefrost didn't want to wait until his death to talk with Shadefrost and Redstorm again. It wasn't fair.

Dead? Several at a time? How have I not heard this!? Petalfur couldn't believe her ears. "Dead?" She repeated, trying to tie ends together. "That's terrible! But how are you..." She blinked, looked at her paws, hoped she was wrong. "You were close to these cats, weren't you?" Petalfur continued, looking back up with a different kind of warmth in her eyes. The kind of warmth that comforted most cats and let them open up, and the kind that sets aside the terrible and worrisome aside for more space for the comfort and honesty. Petal knew what it was like to be in a point where she didn't know who to turn to, or if she should turn to anyone for anything. Depression had cocooned her and bit her each time she considered seeking care, and Petal was determined to help Maplefrost see through the ice in some way.

How am I what, still alive? Pah. I'm not that old yet; she'd better not get her hopes up. Besides, I wasn't the one out fighting those Raven cats. I wish I had been. Those fox-hearts...
"I was only close to two of them. Don't get me wrong, I was shocked when Shineheart dragged my mother and an apprentice back into camp after they were attacked, but I didn't know Wingedpaw well. And Redstorm... I was talking with him when it happened. The medicine cats don't know why." Maplefrost made a vain attempt to crush down his emotions. Mentioning Shadefrost and the elder tom was painful.

"Oh. I'm sorry," was all Petalfur could manage. She knew she should probably say something more, but the words took a while to organize themselves. It was hard for the she-cat to wrap her head around the fact that three of her own clan ages had died, and even more so so soon after the Deathclan invasion that had swept through the clans like a bought of Greencough with its misery. And since Maplefrost hadn't thoroughly explained how Redstorm died, Petalfur focused on the cats that had been attacked. "Who killed them?" She asked after a few moments, her voice curdled with anger for the murder of her clanmates. Shadefrost was Petalfur's friend, Tigerpaw's mother, which made her even more distressed.

The old cat didn't reply for several heartbeats. Come on, for CloudClan's sake, keep it together. What is breaking down in front of some warrior supposed to do? She's not even a close friend.
"Apparently it's some group that's been running around and terrorizing everyone. The Ravens, or something like that," Maplefrost replied in a somewhat strained tone. Well, he'd killed big birds before, and this one would've be no different if he'd had a choice in the matter.

One, two, three... stay strong. Conceal your anger. Smother it in nobility and your service for your clan, not the anguish and thirst for revenge that's settled in your heart like a claw at your throat. Petalfur took a deep breath, stretching her claws into the moss, trying to create a mental web of relationships in her head, which was what she was trying to do with her earlier comment, "how are you..". So, some furballs decided to invade the clans, kill some cats, and take off? Or were they still here? Petalfur had no idea. All she knew was that she wanted to be part of this fight, to do something to help her clan, maybe to go on some secret mission to vanquish a few enemies, or anything that could help her. Calm down. You're seeking revenge again. That won't get anything done at the moment. All you can do is comfort your clanmate. "Do we know what they want?" Petalfur asked, visibly struggling to contain her outrage. "Or are they just nincompoop rogues thinking they can take on Iceclan?"
