Onyxclaw sat in the bushes, staring at the other warriors.... It's really here.... he thought. Onyx began to step forward, but he hesitated and looked down at his paws in shame. I can't go back...No one would even remember me...Would she even forgive me if she did? His heart wrenched as he thought of Shadow's reaction if he came back. He shook his head and laughed at himself. She'd probably tell me to get lost. Onyx looked back out at the den. But what if she doesn't hate me? What if... Onyx's eyes grew wide. There she is! Onyxclaw's eyes filled with hope. It may have been false hope, but he didn't care. There was Shadow...She was even more gorgeous than he remembered. "I have to go to her," he whispered aloud. Onyxclaw almost stepped forward again, but then he hastily backed away. "I can't do it. I can't. It'd be too painful for her...for me..." A tear slid down his dark face and dropped unto the dry, dirt-packed ground. He looked back through the little hole and saw her still there, just sitting. His heart ached. "I can't do this to her..." he muttered. He was starting to turn away when a twig snapped beneath his paws. He froze. Dread filled him for he knew she had heard him. Onyx turned back around and waited for her to discover him.

The weather was still fairly cool, the snow not yet raining down upon the Clans. Shadowfrost hoped it would stay that way. Her shorter coat wasn't much help in the cold. Right now, she was sitting in the Warriors' den just...thinking. Just thinking about life, about her friends, Clan, distant family, her mother and unknown father. She was just thinking, just about life. She shifted her weight to her other leg and sighed, staring down at the ditsy floor of the den. It was leaf-barre, yet the ground here was still dry. That's an upside, I guess, she thought, staring out the entrance of the den. Darn this cold weather. It had been about a moon since she had been out of camp for fun, rather than just hunting or patrolling. She hadn't done anything exciting, apart from make two new friends, so life had been pretty bleak. Nothing to do, no one to talk to... Shadow shifted her weight again and plopped down on her butt, not bothering to sit neatly, instead slumping down on her side, the dust flying up around her and coating her pelt as she landed. She had a strange feeling that she was being watched but she ignored it, figuring it was just some rude cat having an eyeful of her scar. Keep staring, buddy. I've got nothing to hide. The snap of a twig just outside made her ears prick and the tuxedo she-cat's head whipped around and landed on a small hole in the wall of the den. Squinting her eyes, she leered through the gap until she spotted a solid black mass lying on the ground. No, it can't be... Is it...? Onyx-no, don't get your hopes up, just get up and go check. It's probably some random Warrior who fell over or something. No big deal... As she talked to herself in her mind, Shadow stood up slowly and linked out of the den, keeping her eyes glued on the cat. As she got closer, her pessimistic thoughts began to disappear as familiar sights filled her eyes: his onyx black pelt, his beautiful amber eyes, his seemingly-always scruffy pelt... It was him.. It was- "Onyxclaw!" Shadowfroat barrelled forward and leapt on the tom before he could get up, wrapping her paws around his bulk. "Oh, CloudClan, please tell me I'm not hugging some random cat." she mumbled around his fur, burrowing her face into his pelt. She refused to move for a few minutes, staying with her paws wrapped around his middle and fur buried in his neck. Finally, ya big doof. You decided to come back. A sudden anger then overtook Shadow for a moment and she leapt up, glaring down at the tom. "What were you thinking, leaving me alone like that? You piece of fox-dung!" She cuffed him over the ear, claws sheltered of course, and stared lasers down at him, tears a of mix joy and betrayal streaming down her face. Onyxclaw ■ ■ ■ ALl of us get losT in darkness... Onyxclaw then heard her voice. How excited she sounded! He then felt her familiar hug as she tackled him. Onyx wanted to hug her back, but then she pulled away. Then he saw her anger. I knew it couldn't last long... he thought miserably. Onyx flinched at her words and her cuff to his ear. He refused to look her in the eyes. "Shadow, I -" Onyxclaw cut himself off. What could he say? He doubted anything he could say would mend her pain. His eyes glassy, Onyx looked past Shadow and then back down to his paws. His tail flicked in annoyance at himself. The cool breeze chilled him to the bones, even though his fur was thick enough to handle the brutality of leaf-bare. Onyxclaw took a deep breath and then forced himself to look her in the eyes. This may have been more painful than anything. He saw her hurt, her anger, her confusion, her sense of betrayal. "I wanted to come back...but..." He looked away again, too ashamed of what he'd done to his best friend.

Shadow flinched back as Onyx spoke, his rough voice seeming to instantly dry up her tears and loft her spirits. The utter miserable tone of his voice tore at her heartstrings, and the she-cat watched, her bottom lip wobbling as she fought back tears, as the tom looked past her and then down. He didn't mean it, I'm sure he didn't. He didn't mean to leave. Anyway, what does it matter now? He's back. He's for real, in the flesh, not just some figment of my imagination. The cold was biting, sending shivers down her spine. Even he has a longer pelt than me. Jeez, CloidClan, thanks Shadow suddenly shook her head violently, scolding herself for letting her mind wander instead of focusing on the situation at hand. She started down at him, her eyes widening as his amber pools ((ugh I hate describing eyes as pools)) met her own ice-blue ones. He was ashamed, she could see it. She wanted to go to him, to hold him and never let him go, but she forced herself to stay back, to wait for an exploitation, for at least something to explain his disappearance. Something to heal the re-opened hole in her chest. He spoke again but Shadow didn't hear what he was saying. She was making a decision in her head, fighting an imaginary battle. Just tell him. He might disappear again... No, it's too early, too soon. I'll wait. If he goes again, it just wasn't meant to be. Shadow shook her head and started into Onyx's eyes. "Just promise me you won't go away again, okay?" Without giving him time to answer, she jumped forward and, once again, wrapped her paws around him. "You better hug me back this time, okay?" she muttered, letting a soft purr escape her throat. "Don't leave me to do everything. And sorry about your ear," she added, leaning back to take a quick look at the ear she had cuffed. Onyxclaw ■ ■ ■ ALl of us get losT in darkness... Dreamers learn to steer by thE stars

I'm just glad you don't hate me, Onyx thought with relief. "Promise." This time, he hugged her, and he didn't let go for a long time. "You have no reason to apologize...I'm sorry I caused you so much pain...I'm just so happy to finally see you again..." he whispered gently into her ear. "I just hope you understand that living each day without you was like dying everyday..." Onyxclaw leaned back and looked her straight in the eyes. "I will never leave you again."

The FEEELZZ. Also, sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy

Shadow shook her head, face still pressed against Onyx's neck, and muttered, "No more apologies. It's all over now. I'm here, you're here, we're both here. That's all that's mattered. It's all going to be okay." Shadow chuckled softly at his next words. "Ditto. Loosing you was just...a huge hole in my life I could fill, no matter how hard I tried. But that hole's full now. All the rips and tears, they're all patched up." Shadow leant back and smiled gently as Onyx stared her in the eyes and uttered the sentence that made her heart leap. "You better not, Onyx. If you go, I'm coming with ya." She pressed her forehead against his and breathed in his scent, just holding him for a moment. An idea managed to worm itself into her mind and, without moving a muscle, she spoke softly, "How about we start afresh? Let's pretend you never left, we lived without each other, life was normal. How bout it? Think we can pull it off?" Quite reluctantly, Shadow pulled back and gazed into Onyx's eyes, a huge smile on her face. "We should go hunting tomorrow, for old time's sake. You in?" (it's fine! I had exams all week, so I haven't been able to get on much either! XD )

Onyxclaw smiled. "I think I'd like that..." he replied. "I know things won't be exactly like before, but I wouldn't mind starting over. I'm willing to try. And I think hunting together is a great start." Onyx then sighed and dropped onto the ground, looking up into the sky. Just like old times... he thought with yet another smile. He couldn't remember smiling this much in a long time...

Shadow nodded, glad Onyx liked the plan, and shuffled backwards to follow his gaze up to the sky. She stared up at it for a moment, before looking down at Onyx and noticing he was smiling, which made her smile too. "The sky's so pretty, so wide open. I wonder what's it's like to be a bird, to fly out in the wide open sky, to just escape reality and fly away. To be weightless for just a second and able to fly would be the most amazing thing ever." Shadow shook her head and looked down at her paws. "So, hunting tomorrow or now?" She looked back up at the tom and smiled, her unable to say anything else.

Onyxclaw nodded. "Yes, that would be nice...Only, I eat birds," he replied with a chuckle. "But to be free..." He sighed. "Now that would be something." Onyx looked up into the sky as a robin twittered and fluttered onto a high branch. "Huh? Oh, yeah. Now would be fine," he replied. "What?" he asked, wondering why she was staring and smiling at him.

Shadowfrost chuckled along with him and returned her gaze to the sky, letting her mind drift. Onyx's decision snapped her out of her thought and she looked back down at him and nodded, standing up and stretching her legs one by one. At his question, Shadow felt her neck go hot and she shook her head. "What? Oh, uh, nothing. I was just thinking..." Yeah, real smooth, Shadow. Shaking her head, she sighed and padded forward, stopping beside Onyx and smiling. "Come on, bud, let's get going before the sun starts to set."

Onyxclaw narrowed his eyes in confusion for one moment but he didn't have time to think about her answer. They were going to go hunting and have a great time together! Onyx smiled back. "Alright. Let's go," he replied. 'I'll think about all of this later,' he decided in his mind. He began to pad out to clan territory, leaving behind his mistakes and shame in those bushes.
