I watched as the mossball flew into the den as if it was in slow motion. My mouth gaped open and froze. Oh no. I stepped towards the mouth of the den. I felt like I was going into a fox den whilst covered in meat. "M-mossball?"

Maplefrost had been resting in his nest near the den entrance, and he was far from amused when something bumped into his nose. Green eyes, one blinded, blinked open… then immediately narrowed. What was a mossball doing here? Last time he'd checked, the queens hadn't moved in with him and Windflurry.
"Kit, whaddya want? It's way too early for this."

I looked absolutely mortified as I wandered in a little bit to be faced with a somewhat angry looking elder. I shuffled my paws, trying to find a good excuse. He'd probably eat me if I just said I'd woken him up by accident. "S-s-story?"

The calico grumbled loudly. Good thing Windflurry was a heavy sleeper - he wouldn't want Freezekit's antics to wake her up, too. "Right now? Shouldn't you be sleeping?" Maplefrost huffed. He stretched out a paw with several too many toes and speared the mossball beneath black claws.
"Who's your mother?" he demanded. Somebody was in for an earful later.

I looked out of the den, the sun barely touched the horizon which only left pale shreds of light to touch the camp. I looked back over with a sheepish grin. "It t-technically is morning. Cats d-do stuff in the m-morning," I murmured, still quite terrified. I had to keep my mouth from gaping as he started asking for my mother. It's not like I could get her in trouble! "Um... well... no one in particular...."

"Cats don't do stuff until after the dawn patrol has left," Maplefrost sniped back at the young tabby. "And don't start with that nonsense, unless your father was the one to give birth and care for you. Now answer the question." He usually wasn't this grumpy, but getting woken up so early by a pesky kit had gotten him fairly irritated.

I shrugged my shoulders stiffly. "There does have to, uh, be someone to get up first right?" I tried to give a little smile and hide the fear that ran around in circles in my eyes. "You see, I popped out of the ground."

The elder slowly and stiffly sat up, several bones popping in the process. Being a Maine Coon, he was usually larger than most other adults - and he practically towered over the kitten. "Yes, and the first one up shouldn't be a kit. The queens are doing something wrong if they can't keep you confined to the nursery at this hour."
He raised a catlike eyebrow at Freezekit's next words. "Ah - that makes more sense. I should've known that you came from the ground like all the other fleas, ticks, and pests."

"The queens aren't awake twenty four seven, unless you're telling me that you'd like to try it because it's so incredibly easy." I knew myself well enough to pity my poor mother. I snickered at Maple's witty comment, but took a moment to analyze it. "Not all pests come from the ground. A lot live in trees or in between rocks. That means you're a pest too-- we're all in between rocks right now."

"You little munchkins shouldn't be awake 24/7, either. There used to be a CloudClan-forsaken curfew when I was your age! Leave the nursery too late or too early and you'd get your ears boxed." Wow, that had been a really long time ago. Maplefrost could still remember the time he'd spent with Songkit and Lunakit in the nursery - but the memories were hazy.
He felt old.
The elder's fluffy tail twitched. "I suppose the queens never taught you proper respect, either. Do you even know who I am?"

I gave a little shrug. "Everyone is snoring away in there. If you sneak in and out, it's simple." I gave a sly little grin and a wink. I wasn't the noisiest cat regardless. "Well, I do know that you're very old and uh... pretty grumpy at that. Although that's probably partly my fault, I feel that you're not a happy go lucky kinda cat."

"Shouldn't be simple," muttered the long-furred tom under his breath. The cats of this new generation just seemed so eager to break rules. It was disheartening.
With a hint of a warning growl in his voice, Maplefrost spoke again. "We didn't have time to be 'happy-go-lucky' back in my day. You got up, did your work, settled down for some relaxation, and slept. That was it." Frowning, he added, "I bet you don't even know the names of your leader, deputy, and medicine cats at that rate."
