I looked around the busy clearing. Warriors and apprentices roamed about. Some were talking while others were doing various jobs.
Today I decided I needed to find a new place to explore. I'd already wandered into the apprentice den, but no one was there since they were pulled out to do training. Every time I poked my nose into the warriors den, I was yelled at by grumpy senior warriors. I hadn't dared enter the leader or medicine cat's den. They were strictly off limits unless it was an emergency. The only place left was the elder's den.
I wrinkled my nose in disgust. Elders would be even worse than the senior warriors. They are old, cranky, and smell of mousebile. Despite these things, I've heard they tell great stories so I padded over there anyways. I had nothing else to do.
"Hello?" I squeaked unsurely. "Can you tell me a story?"

Maplefrost had been sitting in his nest, grooming, when the young she-cat entered the den. Visitors were unusual these days. After all, the only elders were himself and Windflurry, his mate. Not many cats even knew their names anymore. Which was somewhat depressing, really - the blind cat had thought that retirement would be a bit nicer. It had turned out to be more boring than anything.
He raised his muzzle in surprise upon hearing Coal's voice. "Eh? A story? I suppose so. But who might you be?" Not being able to see the black cat, Maple assumed his visitor was either an older kit or a young apprentice. |

"Coalkit. That's a nice name," meowed the calico with a nod. He hadn't expected the kitten to know his own name, but perhaps IceClan's elders were not forgotten after all.
He curled his fluffy tail around his paws and relaxed. "I am, indeed, Maplefrost. So what sort of tale are you looking for today? I can tell you about a historical event or make something up - my imagination isn't quite gone yet." |

I tilted my head in thought. What story did I want to hear? "Hmmmm. How about a battle between Iceclan and another clan. It can be historical or imaginative!" I shook from excitement.

Maplefrost nodded slowly, silent as he considered his options. IceClan had definitely had its fair share of battles over the seasons. He figured he'd tell a real story for this particular request since Coalkit didn't seem to mind either way. "Alright. This happened during one particularly warm greenleaf. Everyone was relaxing in camp at sunset - a hunting patrol had caught a huge eagle earlier, so most of the Clan was indulging in a small feast. The last thing we were expecting was an invasion.""It was chaos. FireClanners swarmed us; they seemed to be everywhere. But they never fight fair. "They snatched a kit," the elder whispered in what he assumed was a dramatic way. "It was a tiny tom named Thunderkit who got a little too curious. Some warrior grabbed him and tried to make a run for it. It was lucky that some of our own cats were able to corner the thief..."
Though it was probably a little terrifying, Maplefrost knew that kittens these days could be reckless. It was important that they listened to the queens and stayed inside the nursery if the camp was attacked. |

I gasped. A kit? Does that mean I could be stolen from the nursery at any time? My ears flattened back, and my hackles raised. "Did they get the kit back?"

"Yes. A warrior named Mossfeather took down the FireClanner who had taken Thunderkit. The battle continued - but IceClan had gathered itself by that point, and the intruders were quickly being driven off."
"Sparrowfur, a FireClan queen, was one of the last opponents. I have… a bit of a history with her," he sighed, figuring that story would be best left for another day. "She got into a grudge match with Birdshadow. He's my only full brother - did you know that?" Maplefrost's family tree was rather chaotic, but not many cats actually seemed to know about his relatives these days. |

I grinned when Maplefrost said Iceclan was winning. One day I would be in battles like that and help the clan win. "Did Birdshadow defeat Sparrowfur?" I now shifted anxiously in my spot, wanting to know the outcome of the story.

He took a deep breath before continuing. "They did a lot of damage, though, and the medicine cats ended up quite busy in the aftermath. But at least the kittens were safe. Coalkit nodded quickly. She didn't want to get stolen! "I'll make sure to always listen to Lightfall!" The kit then smiled up at Maplefrost, "Thanks for the story! I'll make sure to follow you're advice. Maybe one day I could be the one defending the kits!"
