It shouldn't have been as much of a surprise that Maplefrost was the one calling a Clan meeting that morning. Another kit was ready to start the next stage of her life. After waiting for cats to gather, the blind elder spoke the familiar words.

"By naming this apprentice, we show that IceClan will survive and remain strong. Coalkit! From now on, you will be known as Coalpaw. Palewing, though you are young, you have proven that you are ready for an apprentice. You shall train her."

He nodded encouragingly in the general direction of the two, then hopped down from his perch and made his way back to the elders' den.

Excitement coursed through Coalpaw's veins. She was finally an apprentice! The black she-cat padded towards her mentor, Palewing, to see when training would start.

Palewing purred in delight as her name was called. Finally, an apprentice! She trotted toward Coalpaw and lightly touched noses with her. "You look like a promising she-cat. We'll begin training tomorrow. Try to be up before sunrise!" She smiled, nodding once to the apprentice before stepping back with the crowd. "Coalpaw! Coalpaw!"
