VEX OF DEATHCLAN

In preparation for a day full of trekking around, both inside DeathClan's territory and out in the wanderer lands, Vex had decided to go hunting that morning. She traveled along the network of pine branches. It was a good thing that most of the trees here never went bare - evergreen needles were excellent for staying hidden up in the air.

Soon enough, the grey-furred adult arrived at the swamp. The trees were sparser here, so she had to hop to the ground. It only took her a few minutes of careful tracking and stalking to locate her prey: a rather slimy-looking frog. Vex happily killed it and glanced around for a good place to eat her breakfast.

But something else caught her eye. "Is someone there?" she called warily when she noticed a bush rustling.

Ωlullaby was crouched down, tail in a bush and faced towards a big fat frog. suddenly, a voice came out behind her and the frog jumped away. the feline hissed in annoyance, turned around and shoved through the bush. "well, yes, i am here. there also used to be a frog here. it was sort of 'accidentally' scared off by a cat that was hunting around here as well." she said, voice dripping with sarcasm and annoyance. she slumped down onto a dry patch of the ground and dug unsheathed claws into the soft soil. "so, i suppose we need to introduce ourselves now? isn't that what all cats do nowadays?"Ω

The amphibians were apparently out in force that day. A second frog hopped frantically past her, probably startled by her voice, and an irritated-looking youngling appeared moments later. "Well, it didn't look like you were being very stealthy in the first place," she pointed out. Most newer DeathClanners had a hard time getting used to the territory, so that probably wasn't all Lullaby's fault. She'd learn soon enough - especially seeing as the alternative was starvation.

"If you insist. I'm Vex. Who might you be?"

Ωlullaby gave a last faint flicker of annoyance with her tail, and then regained her calm. "sorry. it was my fault. i'm lullaby. it's nice to meet you, vex." she murmured, dipping her head to the adult. "how long have you been in deathclan?" she meowed, tilting her head to the feline and giving a small faint smile.

Figuring that Lullaby probably wouldn't take kindly to watching her eat after she'd just lost her own meal, Vex pushed her frog off to one side. "Hmm. How long?" the tabby repeated as she tried to recall when she'd first come here.

"Almost three seasons, I guess. It was the end of greenleaf when I joined DeathClan. What about you?" If she had to guess, Vex would say that the other she-cat had been around for a pawful of moons at the most, but she didn't really know.

Ωlullaby gave a small smirk, then smiled naturally and tilted her head. "that's quite a long time." she meowed, then blinked. "i've only been here for a few moons." she stretched her claws, smiling again. "so what do you do around here, apart from hunt?" she asked.Ω

Vex gave a small nod. "Well, a lot of cats pass the time by fighting… or just sparring. I'm not personally big on that. If you like to explore, DeathClan's territory is pretty big, and Drought allows us to roam outside of it too. Have you ever been to the badlands?" The outcast lands closest to RockClan were rather impressive; she'd never seen anything like it before.

Ωlullaby raised an eyebrow, but nodded sharply. "i heard yowls when i came here. maybe cats were fighting." she meowed, pondering this thought in her head. then she shook her head. "no, i have never gone to the badlands. what are they like?" she asked, smiling.Ω

"Wouldn't be surprised. Most of them don't keep their claws sheathed, since there isn't a reason to, so they can get loud." Vex wasn't the best fighter, preferring to take down her opponents with stealth and strategy rather than brute force. It was an uncommon method here.

The royal took a moment to consider Lullaby's question before she spoke again. "It's a strange place. As barren as RockClan's territory, but with strange rock formations instead of cliffs. The ground is a bit like sand - very dusty and dry. I don't really see the appeal in living there. Apparently there's a lot of snakes." She'd seen a few snakes, but had never managed to kill one. Not worth the risk of getting bitten.

"Huh?" Vex tensed for a second, wondering if Lullaby somehow knew about that one time - she'd journeyed through RockClan and into IceClan, then joined up with two other rogues for an ambush on a patrol. Two of the mountain-dwelling cats had died that day. She had been the one to take the life of the apprentice.

The tabby forced herself to relax. This cat was new; surely she hadn't been around when that happened. "No, but if you go far enough into the badlands, you'll come to the edge of their territory. I've heard that they don't patrol their borders as often as the other Clans. RockClan always was the weakest of the four."

There wasn't any harm in a tiny lie like that, right? No need to talk about her slight involvement in the Ravens' affairs.

"We can and have. RockClan was actually the first to fall under siege when Drought started the series of attacks that led to him taking over all four Clans. And if the rumors are correct, he's fought Cloverstar individually since then. I think it's pretty safe to say that the pattern will continue in the future." She shrugged noncommittally. Vex was good with information if nothing else; she hadn't been around for the old war, but had collected enough scraps of knowledge by now that it didn't matter. Even further back than that, the royal had heard about Fallacy and Artemis. Viper's reign was a bit fuzzier. And before that? It was hard to say if anyone remembered anymore.
