Duskpaw had yet another grin that threatened to split his face permanently.
He was fairly sure he heard some whispers about his smiles being a bit too... Wide. Something about how no cat should be able to smile that big. To Duskpaw, it sounded like they were all a bit down. Not really knowing how great it felt to smile. Honestly, in his opinion, the entire clan could do with some more smiling!
Sure, cats stared at him for smiling so much. But really... Would you rather be frowning and sad instead of smiling and happy? There were also cats grumbling at dawn about it being too early to deal with him... He wondered what 'too early' meant. He just woke up at a marginally earlier time than most cats. No biggie.
Spotting a cat who honestly looked a bit less than cherry across camp, he pranced across and sat his rump so he faced the cat, smile still intact.
"Yo! Who are you then?"

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN The oldest cat in IceClan stared sightlessly at Duskpaw in a disgruntled manner when the youngster trotted over to where he'd been relaxing. Believe it or not, Maplefrost had once been happy. But those days had apparently died along with his mother. Life was boring and empty now.
"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds," he deadpanned. "And I'm afraid if you don't know my name then there's not much I can do for you. The better question is, who might you be?" Duskpaw so far... Approved of this cat.
He was one of the Iceclan elders and even then, on the older side. Still... Duskpaw thought he was brilliantly poetic. He listened to Maplefrost's words, thinking about the tom's words. He contemplated them for a moment, with a wondering look on his face. Then he grinned again.
"Well... I'm Duskpaw!" He meowed brightly. "And well..." He crouched down and tapped the ground with his paw. "The world seems pretty intact to me." Then he rose back up to look Maplefrost in the eyes. "And you don't look much like death to me. You seem like a pretty brilliant cat with a lovely way of words, at least that's what I think." He finished, widening his smile almost impossibly wide.
((Nah I don't mind. It's perfectly fine!

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN It was a little difficult when you were blind, but Maplefrost managed to roll his eyes. "Figure of speech," he muttered halfheartedly. As far as young cats went, Duskpaw at least seemed somewhat tolerable. That was practically a record.
"I think you're a bit too optimistic, but it's appreciated nonetheless." A pause, then: "Maplefrost," he added as an afterthought. There was always the chance that nobody had informed Duskpaw of his existence beforehand. CloudClan only knew the extent to which IceClan's elders were usually ignored.
He let out a rumbling sigh to echo the distant thunder. The storm he'd felt in his bones might finally get here soon. "Who might your mentor be?" the calico questioned in a slightly resigned tone. May as well make conversation while he waited for the rain. WORDS: 132 || WRITTEN FOR: Duskpaw NOTES - n/a template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Duskpaw grinned at getting the elder's name.
He'd honestly never heard of Maplefrost before. He wasn't quite sure why... Honestly, he didn't hear much about the elders. He heard plenty about other things, yet the elders had always been omitted. They seemed almost like a forgotten afterthought. Duskpaw highly disapproved of this. He didn't know much about the elders, other than they were respected elders for a reason.
"Oh, my mentor?" He grinned impossibly. "My mentor is a brilliant cat named Dawnbriar!" He meowed brightly. Then his face fell into a face of slight confusion. "Eh... Too optimistic?" He looked upwards. "Well.... I think it's better than being pessimistic. That never helped any cat. Being an optimist helps cats stay up off the ground." He paused. Then he purred. "I honestly don't think too much optimism is a problem. You're free to think that, but I think it helps me always look at the bright side of things. However, that doesn't mean I'm thick or stupid. I still have a brain, I'd just rather see the good than the bad..." Then his face shifted into a frown. "... I feel like this conversation is getting a bit... I don't know..." He sighed.
"Sometimes I just off on tangents like this.... Then I'm always thinking after that the conversation wasn't a very happy one."

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN Cold wind ruffled the tom's dense pelt as he sat listening to Duskpaw's monologue. It had been a little surprising that the apprentice just launched right in - cats didn't usually like to prolong encounters with him. Letting the younger male talk himself out of breath was almost nice, but maybe Maplefrost was just lonely.
He'd nearly forgotten what it was like. Dusk's sanguine attitude reminded the Maine Coon of a younger version of himself. He could remember his days as Maplepaw vaguely; there had still been hopes and dreams back then, and friendly faces everywhere. Perhaps his own optimism had slowly died along with everyone he'd known.
"I never said you're dense," Maplefrost pointed out quietly once the apprentice had stopped talking. "It's just a different way of thinking than what I'm used to. Anyway - about that mentor. I believe I gave Dawnbriar her ceremony, back when Dustpetal wasn't keeping up with those." He winced a bit as he remembered that the former deputy was still missing. Another child gone. "I haven't actually met her, though. What's she like?" WORDS: 179 || WRITTEN FOR: Duskpaw NOTES - n/a template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Duskpaw's smile was back.
However, it was slight this time. It seemed more real. "Dawnbriar? I think.... I think she's brilliant." He looked skyward, observing the sky. "She's a fantastic mentor and cat in general." He closed his eyes, not lowering his head from looking up towards the sky. "... And sorry." He meowed slightly quieter. "I think I mentioned before I tend to go on long tangents. The words just sort of... Form themselves and slip off my tongue." He opened his eyes. "As for why I think Dawnbriar is fantastic.... I don't entirely know. I probably should have a reason, I just don't have one for you. I just know how I feel she is." Then his smile fell.
"Though there is something odd.... She knows on average how long Rockclanner fur tends to be for some odd reason." He took a deep breath. "... I never actually answered your question properly.... Well, she's bright. I mean, she's been friendly and warm. I don't get that feeling of warmth from other cats." His thoughts drifted off to the deputy, who he hadn't quite decided if that cat had been cold or warm in terms of attitude. He shook his head, trying to focus on the things at paw.
He drew out a long, slow, and deep breath.

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN Just as he'd anticipated, another rumble of thunder heralded the true beginning of the storm. Cold droplets started to splatter on the rocky surroundings. Maplefrost twitched an ear as the water streamed off his fur. It wasn't raining too hard yet, but he'd have to retreat to his den once the bad weather really kicked off.
"I suppose I'll need to chat with Dawnbriar sometime, then. She seems interesting enough. There aren't many like that, you know; intrinsically good cats are rare. I know I've done plenty of things in my life that I'm not proud of." That was one thing he wouldn't deny - the calico used to be pure and well-meaning, but that had shifted at some point. Probably after that disaster with Sparrowfur, the old FireClan queen. He still didn't like to think about it.
More raindrops landed on his face; annoyed, he shook them off and continued speaking. "You shouldn't apologize for expressing yourself. Talk all you want. It's too quiet these days, especially with only one denmate…" WORDS: 171 || WRITTEN FOR: Duskpaw NOTES - n/a template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Duskpaw flinched as a water droplet splashed on his nose.
Listening to Maplefrost's words, he knew there was a whole story behind what the elderly tom was saying. Yet, Duskpaw didn't want to pry. He had a feeling that it might be too private. Besides, he said he wasn't proud of it. Obviously not the tales you would flaunt in every cat's face. He'd dismiss it for now.
Then Duskpaw didn't say anything as Maplefrost told him to not to apologize for talking, for expressing his opinion and thoughts. He gave a slight smile at that. "Thanks. I'll remember that." He promised. He looked up. The rain would be coming down hard soon.
Maplefrost wouldn't stick around. He probably shouldn't either. Wouldn't due to get sick and miss training with Dawnbriar.
Though it wasn't exactly fantastic that the cold, wet rain had come to plague them when the snow had literally just melted.
"Looks like the bad weather is going to grace us with its presence soon." He murmured.

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN The main problem with Maplefrost was that he held grudges. Yeah, talking it all over with a friend might help him to let go of some older issues… but everyone he'd been close to was pretty much dead or gone at this point, and he wasn't really willing to have a big heart-to-heart session with somebody he didn't know well. Even Windflurry wasn't around much anymore. He wasn't sure what he would do if she left.
The calico muttered agreement to the statement about the weather. "Now's probably as good a time as any to head in," he meowed with a twitch of his tail in the direction of the elders' den. "You're welcome to visit another time if you'd like." WORDS: 121 || WRITTEN FOR: Duskpaw NOTES - Late and lazy post. Been low on RP muse lately. template by Margie @ Adoxography v2

Duskpaw turned to Maplefrost and gave a slight smile. He nodded.
"Thank you. I will sometime. I promise." He wondered if Maplefrost typically wasn't one to talk to apprentices. Young cats who'd hadn't seen much of life. Still... He thought it would be polite. Perhaps kind to take the old tom up on his offer. Someday. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next moon. Season....
He decided to stop thinking about it. After a short while while he had been thinking, he dipped his head once more and turned to retreat into the apprentice's den.

MAPLEFROST OF ICECLAN From what he'd seen, apprentices tended to be rather good about keeping promises. It was a strange quirk. Nevertheless, this at least reassured him that he wouldn't be entirely alone in his den for the next few moons.
Maplefrost flicked his ears, listening to Duskpaw pad off as the rain began to splatter down more heavily. He headed back to the elders' den moments after. It seemed like the roof was leaking again. Sighing faintly, the old cat just pushed a few scraps of moss over to catch the drips as he settled into his nest to relax.
