Though Redpaw had been made an apprentice several days ago, he still wasn't comfortable in his new den. Perhaps he missed the familiarity of the nursery, or maybe he wasn't used to being one of the youngest cats in the den. Whatever it was, it was preventing him from getting sleep, and that agitated him. As he rolled into a new position, hoping once again to find a comfortable spot, he heard what sounded like a small sigh. By his very nature, Redpaw wasn't a shy cat, but being in an unfamiliar den surrounded by cats he barely knew did put him a bit on edge, and so when he called out, his voice was timid. "You can't sleep either?" he called in the general direction of the other cat.

Naturepaw sat in thought, not really feeling like going to sleep. Then she heard a cat talking to her. She turned her head and looked at him with her mud colored eyes. "Oh. Yeah. But honestly, I just didn't feel like going to sleep," Nature replied with a laugh. She got up and walked over to the tom. "I'm Naturepaw. What's your name?"

Redpaw was relieved to hear friendliness in this new cat's- Naturepaw, she'd said her name was- voice. He replied to the she-cat's conversational tone with a smirk, and said, "Nice to meet you, Naturepaw. I'm Redpaw." After a moment of thought, the long-furred tom sat up in his nest, allowing him to meet the other apprentice's gaze. "So," Redpaw added, any hint of shyness he'd had before gone, "what do you do for fun around here?"

Naturepaw laughed. "Well, it's ridiculous, but I actually like to train - even if no one else really likes to. I'm excited to become a warrior and protect my clan," she replied wistfully. "Also, I love to look up at the stars and find shapes, creatures, stories...A nice walk in through the tall grass is also fun, for me at least. I wish we had more trees, though. It would be fun to scale them like Treeclanners." She smiled and then looked at the tom. "Well. What do you like to do for fun, then?" she asked, returning his smirk with a smirk of her own.

boop
Pinyonpaw shifted uncomfortable in her nest. She heard the chatter of two apprentices only a few fox-lengths away... and she was terrified by the growing fact they could possible start talking to her. Sure, she wanted to meet new cats... and make some friends in the process... but she wasn't good at socializing, or being brave or... any of the above. She was shy, and skiddish... and a bit lonely, too.
Though, hearing the one she-cat--Naturepaw--talk about her activities, the sandy she-cat couldn't help but grow calmer. Somehow, Naturepaw's words soothed her fear down to a minimum, since she started imagining herself enjoying those same things.
And that made her want to talk to them.
Raising her head, Pinyonpaw turned her stormy blue-gray eyes towards the apprentices, opening her mouth and about to pipe in her own friendly words... until her fear again returned in a rush of anxiety through her body, and with a squeak, her head shot back down into the moss and she buried her muzzle into her nest. I-I hope they didn't n-notice....

"Oh, well, exploring's pretty fun, and training as well, I suppose. And you can never go wrong with a good conversation," Redpaw replied, his playful smirk growing into a grin. Before either of them could say any more, the long-furred tom heard what sounded like a squeak, and out of the corner of his eye he noticed movement in a nest close by. Fixing his gaze on the nest where he'd noticed the commotion, he called out, "Sorry, did we wake you?" His tone remained friendly, his blue eyes still contained a hint of mischief; the squeal he'd heard earlier had sounded almost fearful, and he hoped that his carefree manner would help to soothe the cat who'd made the noise.

T-they did hear...! she thought in horror. Yet, despite the overwhelming fear that controlled her thoughts and actions, she didn't want to appear and rude and completely ignore the one who had spoke. So, in an extremely slow movement, she raised her head til only her stormy eyes could be seen and her fluffy ears. "H-hi...." she murmured, and then shook her head quickly at his question. No, you didn't wake me. she said almost calmly to herself. I'm just afraid of everything... including nightmares.

"Right, well, so long as we didn't wake you..." Redpaw said, not entirely sure as to whether he'd actually seen the she-cat shake her head or not; it was hard to tell in the dark of the night. "Anyway, I'm Redpaw, and this is Naturepaw," he continued, flashing the cat a friendly grin and hoping Naturepaw wouldn't mind introducing her to this new cat. "And what's your name, if you don't mind my asking?"

She was thankful Redpaw had introduced the both of them, since she would have most likely said their names at some point and would be accused of eavesdropping. Not that she completely was, of course... to a point....
"P-Pinyon... paw." she said softly, yet loud enough to be heard. It would be overly embarrassing if the two had heard wrong and started to say her name differently. And the thought to correct them scared her even more... would they get mad if she did? Or sad? Maybe they would hate her... Oh, I hate being scared of everything scary.... she whimpered.

"Pinyonpaw?" he repeated, making sure he'd heard her correctly. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Pinyonpaw," Redpaw added, his good-natured grin returning. "If you want," he called, glancing at Naturepaw a moment before continuing, "you can join our conversation. We were just talking about what we like to do for fun." He was pretty sure Naturepaw wouldn't mind Pinyonpaw joining them, and the poor she-cat seemed scared out of her wits; perhaps getting her used to new cats would help her in the long run.

Pinyonpaw nodded swiftly at his invitation to join. "O-okay...." she glanced at Naturepaw. Should she wait and let the she-cat speak next? Or should she just talk anyway? Redpaw looked friendly... Naturepaw sounded nice... but... could that all change in a second? "U-um... s-so what do y-you two l-l-like?" she murmured.

"Well, like I was saying, exploring is pretty fun. And conversations are great, so long as you have them with the right cats," Redpaw replied, mischief flashing through his clear blue gaze. "And I, for one, am one of the best cats to talk to," he added, smirking lopsidedly to let both she-cats know he didn't really think so highly of himself. By his logic, Redpaw figured that joking around with another cat was one of the best ways to get a cat to warm up to you, and he hoped this would hold true with Pinyonpaw. "Oh!" he interjected once again, "and training, which is something Naturepaw and I seem to have in common. But what do you like to do, if you don't mind my asking?" the long furred tom asked, his friendly gaze coming to rest on Pinyonpaw as he awaited her response.

Redpaw went on about what his likes were, and Pinyonpaw listened carefully while shooting the silent Naturepaw many glances. She was glad Redpaw was being so friendly with her, but what of Naturepaw? Was she angry Pinyon had interrupted the two? Maybe she didn't like her already? Eep! she flinched away when Redpaw suddenly piped up about training. Her storm gray eyes clouded over with fear once more, and she looked away with flattened ears. M-me?
"I-I like...." she trailed off, fighting the urge to just curl up and lose her will to speak. "U-uh... w-watching the clouds... a-and exploring...." Pinyonpaw bit her lip. "I-I'm not a good f-fighter... or hunter...."

Redpaw was beginning to wonder at Naturepaw's long silence; maybe she was shy after all? Or maybe she liked speaking with just one cat at a time? Either way, he'd continue the conversation; the frightened Pinyonpaw seemed to be speaking for longer intervals, which was encouraging. "Oh, so we have something in common! That's cool," he replied, his usual friendly grin growing into a smile. "And you shouldn't worry about that just yet. After all," he added, his eyes dancing with mischief, "not everybody can be as good at hunting and fighting as I am." His smile changed once again into a smirk, and he said. "I'm joking, of course. I'm not that great at those things yet either; but that's what training is for," he finished, hoping he sounded encouraging.

Pinyonpaw waited for him to fall silent before she nodded slowly. That's what training is for. she repeated, and the risked a small--barely even noticeable--smile. "Y-yeah...." she squeaked.
