Silverkit was bored. She couldn't find a single other kit to play with, and all the warriors had brushed her off. She had heard that the elders told amazing stories though. With a yelp, Silverkit bounded into the elder's den and tripped over some cat. "I'm so sorry!" she mewed, head bowed in horror.

Of course. The one day Maplefrost decided to lay in the den entrance to soak up some sunlight, someone decided to come barreling through and nearly trampled him in the process. That someone was rather small and squeaky, which meant one thing…
Great. More kittens. Isn't that just what I need?
"It's fine," the blind elder grumbled as he sat up. As he very well knew, the queens would try to claw his tail off if he snapped at a youngster. That didn't mean he couldn't be a little sharp tongued, though."Whaddya want?"

Silverkit squeaked in excitement. Here was an elder! Maybe she could finally get that story. She had heard of the amazing stories about eagles told by Maplefrost. Or maybe Maplefrost could tell a story about his life. She sure looked like her life had been exciting. "Hi, I'm Silverkit. Will you please tell me a story?"

He let out a melodramatic sigh. Usually visitors were smart enough to bring food if they wanted something from him, and it had nearly been a full day since Maplefrost last tasted fish. He wasn't sure how much longer he could hold out. And who would keep his poor mate company if he keeled over one day from lack of scaly sustenance? No, no, this would not do at all.
"Hrrrm. A story? Maaaaybe if you fetch me a trout first…"

( Sorry Typo!!!)
Silverkit cringing in horror. She had forgotten to bring prey! She knew that most elders expected prey, but it had slipped her mind in all the excitement. With a quick mew of acknowledgement to Maplefrost, she bounded out of the den and towards the fresh-kill pile. Where are all the trout? Silverkit dug through the pile with increasing urgency. There! She grabbed the one tiny trout that was on the pile and was about to head back when something occurred to her. Maybe Maplefrost would want more prey! If it were me I surely wouldn't be full from that measly trout. She picked up a slightly larger carp and painstakingly lugged both pieces of prey to the elder's den, panting all the way. When she reached the den, she set both fish onto the ground and flopped panting onto the floor of the den. "Here you go, Maplefrost!" She mewed in satisfaction at a job reasonably well done.

He could hear the tiny pawsteps retreating back into the camp. Figuring that Silverkit wouldn't be back immediately, the elder took a moment to straighten up a bit more and do some quick grooming. Not that any tidying of his dense pelt could be fast. Maplefrost knew he'd have to settle down and actually devote some time to that before he went to sleep. He didn't want his appearance to be too ragged.
Soon enough, though, the youngster had returned. "I smell fish," he said, seeming pleased. He reached out a paw to snag the scaly prey - there were two, one definitely being trout. The other was a different fish he didn't know as well. Maplefrost started munching on the trout before he spoke again.
"About that tale, then. What sort are you looking to hear today?"

Silverkit waved her tail in joy as Maplefrost ate the trout. He accepted it! Well, truth be told she had no idea what sort of story she would want. She looked appraisingly at Maplefrost. His fur was slightly ruffled, but looked altogether neat. It gave him the look of a war-ruffled warrior. "Could I please have a story about you as a warrior? You look like a brave one!" Silverkit mewed excitedly.

Maplefrost considered this request as he finished the trout, leaving the larger carp for another time. Perhaps Windflurry would want to share it when she got back to the den. His mate rarely spent time sitting around here, so it was usually him telling the stories. Oh well. He might put on a facade of grumpiness, but the sightless calico really didn't mind talking to the occasional visitor.
"I suppose I can do that," he admitted. "As a warrior, I had a lot of adventures. How about… hmm. I can tell you about the time I found a secret part of the territory?"

Silverkit blinked up at the elder. She didn't know that there were any secret parts in the territory! MapleFrost must have been an amazing cat to have discovered that. With a contented sigh, she nodded and settled down to hear more.

"When I was younger, exploring was one of my favorite hobbies. IceClan has lived in these mountains for countless generations, yes, but there are areas where we don't patrol very often. Now, I happened to be fishing alone at a different stretch of the river one day. It was warm and sunny, but also windy… so when I leaned over the water to catch a trout, one sudden gust caused me to lose my balance!"
The elder's tail waved animatedly as he continued telling the tale. "I was so surprised that I fell right in with a big splash. All the fish were frightened off. I was a skilled swimmer, of course, so being in the water was no problem. But just as I was about to hop back onto the riverbank, I noticed something floating downstream! Somehow, by falling on that trout, I had managed to kill it."
"I swam over to retrieve it. Too late, though, I realized that the current was stronger. This part of the river was rather close to the waterfall. No matter how hard as I paddled, it made no difference - I was sucked away and got flung right over the falls!"
"What do you think happened then?"

Silverkit mewed in amusement at Maplefrost's luck. Imagine landing on a trout and killing it! It was certainly an unorthodox method of hunting. Gasping, Silverkit tried to imagine the fear Maplefrost must have felt, drowning and being thrown over a waterfall. Surely no cat could survive that! And yet Maplefrost had. "Wow! Did a CloudClan cat save you? Oh, I know! You got carried away by a hawk and went on an epic journey!" Silverkit's mind whirled with all the possibilities.

"Not quite," Maplefrost replied in an amused tone. "The bird was a different occasion; a tale for another day. Perhaps CloudClan was keeping an eye on me, though, for I survived the fall into the pond below. Lucky thing that I'm one of the larger members of the Clan. I'm not so sure if a small warrior would've made it."
He shifted slightly and curled his tail around his flank. "Once I climbed out of the water, I realized that I'd never been in this area before. It was as if a giant paw had scooped out part of the mountain. There were sheer rock walls around the pond, except for on one side, where a trail led back to the rest of the territory. And as I sniffed around, I discovered that there was a moss-covered ledge behind the waterfall! It would make an excellent hiding place for anything, really."
"Although I should've gone straight back to camp, I couldn't resist taking a rest on that ledge. It was actually quite comfortable. On a different occasion, I returned to the waterfall basin at night, and found that it is also an excellent place from which to view the stars. You should check it out yourself if you ever have the time… err, just don't try getting there the way I did at first."

Silverkit flicked her tail in excited glee. A secret moss ledge? It would make for a perfect adventure, maybe with Snapkit, with whom she had discovered a shared interest for stargazing. Maybe she could go and find the path leading to the waterfall! She nodded seriously at Maplefrost's quick addition to the story. She wouldn't want to be caught in that! Especially since she was quite small for her age. She would certainly be swept over the edge and hurt by the impact. She wondered if she should leave now. Maplefrost's story seemed complete, and she knew that most cats had no interest in entertaining an excitable kit for long. Eyes glittering, she looked towards the elder.

Tattered ears swiveling forwards, Maplefrost stifled a yawn. He was about ready to take a nap. Between the tasty fish and all that talking… yep. Resting in the warm sunlight was seeming like a better idea by the moment. The old cat tilted his head to one side and spoke after a while, seeing as his audience had gone silent.
"Hope I didn't talk you to sleep. Perhaps you'd better head back to the queens? It's been a while, and they'll be upset if they can't find you."

Silverkit dipped her head in reply and mewed,"Okay! Thanks for the story!" Maybe she would come back another day to hear more stories. Who knew? Backing softly out of the elders' den, she padded back to the nursery and curled up in her nest, settling down to a nice nap.
