Brackensky yawned.
She stretched her legs after a less than perfect night of sleep. She gazed towards the sky. The sun had even risen yet. She groaned, not feeling up to going back to sleep. She dragged her paws as she made her way over to the fresh-kill pile and took a piece of prey for herself. She lay down and took a bite of it. She savored each bite, enjoying the luxury of not having to rush through her meal to catch her next. She yawned once more once she'd finished.
She breathed in through her nose and caught a scent. It was coming from behind her.She looked over head shoulder with a grin.
"Oh, hello there..."

Lace up your shoes Here's how we do Run baby run Don't ever look back They'll tear us apart if you give them the chance Don't sell your heart, don't say we're not meant to be Run baby run, forever we'll be You and me | Dogpaw was practically a ghost. He went about his daily routine of doing the chores no other apprentices seemed inclined on completing. He had already cleaned out the Elders' den and helped rid their pelts of ticks with mouse bile - a task he was averse to but was obligated to do all the same - and assisted in tossing out the prey from the pile that were soon to become crowfood. The burly apprentice was on his way to the nursery with cleaning out the moss beddings, and he happened upon one of the queens on his way.
His ears perked at her greeting. He respectfully bowed his head in return, his face void of any clear emotion but a mirthful light calmed the sea-green color of his eyes. "Good morning." His low voice rumbled, a stark contrast to the higher tones of Brackensky's own. |

Brackensky noticed the fresh moss in the apprentice's mouth.
She glanced over to where he seemed to be heading. The nursery... Huh. He must've been the apprentice stuck with that particular chore. She wasn't sure the nursery was in need of being cleaned... Though that might be the fact that she never really had done that herself while she'd been on her own. Eh... She'd probably figure out soon enough what a smelly nursery was like by comparing it to a clean one... Or something.
She gave a small smile. "'Tis a fine morning indeed... Cleaning out the nursery?" She inquired.

His own gaze followed her own to the general direction of the nursery before finding its way back to Brackensky. Dogpaw put down the bundle of moss in his maw, finding that it would be more challenging to engage in conversation with something in his mouth. He nodded. "I doubt the others find it worthy of their time to do meager tasks like this when they could spend their energy elsewhere." The cool honesty in his tone matched the tranquility of his sea-colored eyes, and they shined with interest as he added, "What might you be doing out here, miss Brackensky?" |

Brackensky smiled.
So perhaps this encounter might not be as brief as she had thought it'd be. "Mm... Your taking up of the chores speaks bounds as to your maturity." She remarked. Seemed he understood that things needed to be done, and left to fester they'd pile up until they were a huge monster of a mess that some poor soul would have to clean up. Ah, to be a naive, innocent child again. She was far from old, but she certainly wasn't innocent. "Oh... Just hanging around."

It felt nice to be acknowledged for his sense of duty and, apparently, his level of maturity. Few were the cats Dogpaw talked to, but even fewer the ones who saw the value in the simple tasks he did day to day. "Thank you," he spoke, voice clear and obviously thankful. He mirrored Brackensky's smile for a heartbeat and settled to his usual neutrality. He bobbed his head, humming, "A few breaks every now and then are things to be enjoyed, of course - especially for cats such as yourself who work so hard." Huh. He was unnaturally talkative today, it seemed. |

Brackensky enjoyed the smile that appeared on Dogpaw's face from her compliment.
Even if the smile disappeared soon after. At least the transition wasn't abrupt. Perhaps it was a bit sappy, however she always enjoyed seeing those around her at ease and in states of bliss... Of course, she wouldn't fault any cat for feeling down, but those moments of light were always to be treasured in her heart. Even if it was from a stranger or a mere acquaintance. "Oh no... I don't do much." While she had the title of queen and she was aware of her duties which would quickly become quite the pawful... She at the moment didn't feel like she was doing enough. She supposed it came from previously having to take care of herself entirely on her own.

"You might not think you're doing much at all in contribution to.. this grand scheme of clan life, but some of us beg to differ," he stated simply. The bicolored apprentice truly believed that the queens did the most work out of everyone, even Cloverstar and Flamepath. They were the providers of future generations, teaching and influencing the young ones in the hopes that they'd become good warriors and good clanmates. "Perhaps when I'm done with this," he gestured to the moss he had been carrying, "you'd like to take a walk with me? Hunt, even? That way you would feel less idle." |

Brackensky pondered Dogpaw's proposition.
She smiled as she nodded. "Hm... Perhaps one day I shall feel like I'm truly a better part of this clan. However, today is not that day and I think I shall take you up on your offer." She looked to the sky. "We have plenty of time... While you are finishing your chores... I shall remain here." She gestured with her pay to her still unfinished piece of prey, having been distracted by conversation. She resumed eating.

Words may not have been his strongest front—or the very least it was scarce to hold conversation—but he could communicate with body language just as well as talking. His whiskers twitched, and his blue-green eyes shone with a mirthful light. He bowed again to the queen before excusing himself to the nursery. The big tom maneuvered around the little ones, his big form a contrast to their smaller bodies. He rolled up all the dirtied, useless moss and replaced them with the moss he had. Before long, Dogpaw was already throwing out the old beddings by the dirtplace and making his way back to Brackensky. His neck tingled with a little ache after ducking down so much, but it didn't bother the apprentice. |

((Sorry for ever so extremely late reply! My muse kept dying whenever I looked at this thread...))
Brackensky had long finished her meal.
Then she proceeded to doze off to kill time until Dogpaw was finished with his chores. A short while later, she yawned and stretched her limbs, standing back up. She appeared to have returned to full consciousness just in time to see the apprentice emerging from the nursery. She looked over. "Are your chores done now?"
