HornetstripeOlivekit paced swiftly throughout the nursery, her tail twitching in annoyance. There was literally nothing to do around here. Nothing. It was starting to get to her; the never ending boredom. Why couldn't she just be an apprentice already? The she-kit growled lightly, flopping to the ground dramatically. Of course, she was smart enough to think of ways to amuse herself, mostly with riddles. Yet, riddles were absolutely pointless if you already knew the answer. I guess I could just ask with someone else the riddle, she thought, wrinkling her nose slightly at the thought. She wasn't the best at socializing. I wonder if Pantherkit's around, curiously she rolled onto her paws and looked around for her brother. Strangely she didn't find him, instead her eyes landing on another she-kit. "You," she mewed, not quite sure how to start a proper conversation. She padded close to the she-kit, wracking her brain for a good riddle. That was a good way to start a conversation right? Well, I guess I'll find out, "what comes down but never goes up?"

Hornetkit wasn't having the most productive day. Translation: she was having a day just as productive as she usually did. The snowfall had thinned out that morning, and she was left without something to do for the day, which absolutely sucked in her opinion. Fairly disappointed that watching snowflakes was out of the question for a fun activity, and the fact her paws were too cp;d to climb the smaller trees scattered around camp, the she-cat grumpily poised herself in the Nursery, taking to cat watching to waste time until her paws thawed out.
Quite unusually, there was another kit pacing around behind her, seeming rather annoyed. This had been going on for a little while now, but she didn't question it. Kits did strange things, her included, so who was she to interrupt a perhaps fun activity for her fellow Clanmate? Hornetkit tried to turn her attention back to the bustle outside the den, but the kit's growls behind her swiped her attention. Honestly, take a chill pill PLEASE, she thought, sweeping her tail back and forth in annoyance. Hunching her shoulders, she glanced back outside when the cat behind her spoke. Her heart skipped a beat and she felt her muscles stiffen, breath hitching in her throat. They sounded slightly irritated, and Hornetkit wondered slightly if she had somehow annoyed the kit, simply by being there. Turning her head slightly, but not making eye contact, she swallowed and waited to see if they would continue, leaning backwards when they approached.
""O-oh, uhm..." she stammered, her mind going blank. Was she asking a question? Just...out of the blue. A question. Blinking, the maine coon opened her mouth, struggling for words. After a moment, she shut it, took a deep breath, and racked her brain for an answer. "I-um...snow? It was snowing before, and that never went up..." She glanced outside at the light trickle of white, before looking over at the kit.

Olivekit blinked, surprised the she-cat had answered correctly; after all most kittens were rather daft in her opinion. "Correct," the she-cat mewed, now taking noticed that the other kitten seemed taken aback by her approach. Had she done something wrong? Olivekit was fairly sure this was how one went about starting a conversation; one cat would speak, possibly ask a question, and then the other cat would answer. Maybe she asked the wrong sort of question? Not that it seemed to bother the other she-kit that much, at least from what Olivekit could tell. The again, it wasn't like Olivekit was the type to be trusted in judging the emotions of others, it was one of the few things she found complicated. "I'm Olivekit, by the way," the kitten introduced herself, almost forgetting she had yet to do that, "and your a lot smarter than you look-- not to insult you, pretty much all kits look uneducated. I would suppose this is because most kits are," the she-cat shrugged, then thought up another riddle, "hmm... what's as light as a feather, but even TreeClan's strongest warrior wouldn't be able to hold it for more than a few minutes?"

Hornetkit's gaze drifted over the she-cats pelt, trying to recognise her. She had a similar scent to Brissa's kits, so she concluded that this was one of the bunch. Strangely, she hadn't seen her around before, despite her prolonged time spent in the Nursery. But then again, she didn't really have knack for remembering specific cats she hadn't interacted with before. There was a small moment of silence after the new cat said she was correct in her answer, and Hornetkit wondered what she may might be thinking about. She looked slightly confused, obviously contemplating something, but she quickly spoke again. Olivekit, huh? What's an olive? Sounds like a colour almost, but I haven't heard of it... She kept the question to herself and nodded, trying to look Olivekit in the eyes but failing miserably. "Thank you, uhm, I guess," she responded, her gaze fluttering to the side. "That is true, they are only kits, after all."
Trying to push down her awkwardness, Hornetkit bit her lip and tried to make conversation. "I'm Hornetkit. I believe you're one of Brissa's kits, right? I've met a few of your brothers." At her next question, the maine coon's eyes darted around as she tried to think up a response, wondering if Olivekit was bothered by the time it took her to think. Answering because of sheer worry, she stammered out, "u-uhm, I'm not too sure, really. Sorry."
(It's air, of course. My dad likes to tell me these riddles way too often, so I know quite a few :P)

"Right you are; good deduction," Olivekit compliment, her face set in its usual blank expression although she found it pleasing that the other kitten seemed competent in the ways of sleuthing, "and was I correct in hearing you say that you've met a few of my brothers? Hmph," the pale brown kitten's ear quirked in an interested manner, "I wasn't aware I had more than one. Oh well, I should probably get around to knowing who my family is one day; not that it's proven to be useful information. I have met one of my siblings though, Pantherkit I believe his name was. Rather enjoyable I guess, or at least not as incompetent as most of the children around here," the she-kit took a moment to sweep a lazy gaze around the nursery. "Oh, and, um, it's good to meet you, Hornetkit," Olivekit mewed, letting her eyes flit to the other kittens before briskly flitting away. She was new to this whole "politeness" thing, but she was pretty sure thats how it worked. She wasn't going to smile though, even though that's what the she-kit heard was custom; probably best not to scare her off with your emotional awkwardness, she thought, mentally grinning although her face remained in its custom expressionless state. "Really? Oh well, don't be too hard on yourself about it. Riddles weren't meant to be easy by any means. The answer is 'breath' by the way, not even the strongest cat in all the clans could hold that for more than a few minutes-- actually and IceClanner might be able to, but then again I've heard there more fish than cats," the she-kit rolled her eyes at the old joke, although their was the faintest hint of amusement in her voice.

Hornetkit forced a small smile out of politeness, keeping her gaze astray from Olivekit, and shuffled her paws. She glanced up at the she-cat's face for a moment, trying to pick out what she was thinking, but the blank stare threw her off and she looked away. The lack of facial expression made her somehow feel more comfortable, however, as she was so used to not expressing it genuinely herself. She nodded in reply to Olivekit's question, wondering why she wasn't aware of the presence of more of her siblings. She had a family accessible a any time, why didn't she take advantage of that and get tot know them? Hornetkit knew she would jump at the chance, and felt slightly disappointed when her acquaintance admitted to not getting to it due to the lack of useful outcome. I shouldn't judge her, really, but family is family. She chuckled slightly when Olivekit poked fun at her fellow kits, recalling the nearly identical comment she had heard from Foxkit the other day, and appreciated the common view from the kits about their rather daft Clanmates. "About your earlier question," she began slowly "I have met Pantherkit, as well as his brother, Foxkit. Quite a pleasant bunch, actually."
Hornetkit met Olivekit's eyes for the same moment she looked, and flickered away simultaneously. The stammer in the kit's words eased her mind a little, finding her common problem comforting coming from another cat. She didn't smile, either, enjoying the small silence not interrupted by a forced facial expression. She looked back up and nodded when Olivekit reassured her, and felt a small wave of relief. Breath, that was a hard one. How did she think of all these riddles, anyway? They're rather clever. Gaining a bit more respect for the quiet, mysterious she-cat, she attempted a small grin and laugh. "Your riddles are pretty clever, do you have any more?"

"Glad to hear it, Olivepaw mewed, her monotone voice holding a softer edge to it as she began to relax around Hornetkit. It was true that she didn't put much value into family; to her it seemed pointless when one mother in a clan birthed more than her fair share of kits. It wasn't normal, she believed, to keep track of all one's siblings since most cats had plenty; dozens upon dozens to paint a picture. Still, she was getting somewhat fond of this she-kit's company, and knowing that her blood was treating this cat fairly set Olivekit's mind to rest. After all, she had a feeling that some part of her would feel guilty if her kin mistreated anyone, especially if the cat they mistreated happened to be someone the pale brown kitten could see herself calling a friend. Eventually that is. After all, Olivekit found friendship somewhat nonessential and occasionally tedious, although talking with a mutual was proving to be entertain in the least. "Of course, the she-kit replied, her voice resembling that of pride; one of the few emotions that naturally flowed through the kitten. The kitten thought for a second. She cleared her throat before she spoke so that Hornetkit would know she would be stating the riddle, "feed me and I live, yet give me a drink and I die."

Hornetkit let a smile smile slide onto her lips when the seemingly almost emotionless she-cat gained a warmer tone to her voice, and quietly relished the minor victory. Finding a cat who could stand her presence as much as she could theirs was a rare feat, one she enjoyed for the small moment the victory lasted, before her mind returned to its previous nervous state. However, she felt a little more comfortable, and allowed her muscles to relax and gaze to wander over the pale brown kit, taking in her physical appearance and feeling herself memorise her appearance. She'd recognise her around camp now, at least. Wasn't the most useful ability, but maybe if she gained enough confidence a future conversation could be stricken up. The change in Olivekit's voice was curious, and intrigued Hornekit. She sure seems to be fond of her riddles. It's nice that she has a passion for something so clever. As the she-cat cleared her throat, she looked back over at her and listened intently to the short-but-difficult question. Hmm, that's a hard one... She thought carefully, her eyes wandering around aimlessly for a minute or two. As she pondered, uncalled for thoughts and images popped into her head, one of them being the Clans themselves for some reason. FireClan...Fire, that's it! A rare, confident grin popped onto her face and she exclaimed, "Fire, of course."

Olivekit watched the other she-kit curiously as she attempted to solve the riddle. The young she-kit found the way other cats thought to be somewhat fascinating, not that she could really tell exactly what was going on in the other cat's mind. Yet she was learning to pick up small, subtle hints in expressions that other cats made that clued to what they were thinking. She had found that someone with a taunt expression on, with their muscles held firm and their eyes set in a sharp, somewhat off-putting manner, tended to be concentrated. The grin that appeared on Hornetkit's face signified that the other she-kit had come to a conclusion, and the confidence that the grin held meant that the answer the other she-kit had come too was most likely right; otherwise she wouldn't be so confident in it. "Fire," Olivekit repeated with a nod, "correct. Good time too, I asked that one to my mother once and she spent forever trying to figure the answer out," the pale brown kitten rolled eyes, although she wasn't really annoyed. She didn't get to speak to her mother much, maybe once or twice in her life, but she found her to be fairly enjoyable. Usually. "Still up for more?" Olivekit asked, tipping her head to the side inquisitively.

Hornerkit smiled again, glad her answer had been correct. She was growing quite fond of these riddles, as the were fun to figure out and overall heightened her knowledge somewhat. Olivekit was intriguing her, and as for the source of all her riddles, she concluded the elders must be teaching her a thing or two. She chuckled at hearing that she had gotten the riddle before the Warrior, silently joyful at the fact. Wow, I'm actually enjoying myself. Huh, who knew some cats could actually make me proud of myself. "Heck yeah!" she exclaimed, not loud enough however to draw attention to herself from the neighbouring cats. She was surprised at her own burst of enthusiasm, wondering if the lack of sleep had perhaps contributed to it, but concluded that she was growing to be more comfortable with Olivekit, quite a rare feat indeed.

sorry about this taking so long! it feels like it's been a year since i last replied //shot Olivekit's eyes widened slightly at the other she-kit's words, and for a moment a smile twitched at the corners of her mouth. Quickly the she-kit suppressed it, although her voice was confident she had never been the type of cat who was comfortable visibly displaying emotions. Still, the fact that she had let a momentary smile slip onto her features was a feat for the she-kit, she usually wasn't that open with others. Probably because she had never managed a conversation this long before; for some reason other cats found her annoying. And somewhat rude as well, from what she had been told. "How about we try something a little more poetic?" the pale brown she-kit asked rhetorically, although her face was back to it's usual stoic default her olive hued eyes gleamed with emotion. She cleared her throat before she began, "it cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after. Ends life, kills laughter," Olivekit stared intently at her companion after she finished, wondering if wording a riddle differently would throw Hornetkit off her game.
