Hailpaw was sitting outside of the apprentices' den. She had nothing else to do. Her family and friends were absent, and she wasn't sure how she'd go about meeting new people. She just knew she'd end up looking like an idiot if she stumbled up to a cat and started talking. So here she sat. Waiting. Listening. Hoping someone would talk to her.

"Aren't you bored?" Raggedwolf remarked, looking at the strange she-cat from upside down. The warrior, bored himself, was laying on his back on top of the mound that was the warrior's den. With his head and shoulders hanging off the den roof, he watched Hailpaw, a lazy smile on his face. "You just going to sit there until you start growing vegetation?" |

The she-cat flinched when she heard the sudden sound of a voice. She turned her head in the direction it was coming from and cracked a smile. "I am quite bored. But I think it'd be pretty cool for greenery to start growing on my pelt." Hailpaw tilted her head. "Who are you?"

Raggedwolf laughed, not expecting the answer. To him, growing plants didn't sound so appealing. "I think it'd be kind of itchy." With a flip of his torso he slid off the roof, landing lightly on his paws. He shook out his raggedy coat before approaching the apprentice. "I'm Raggedwolf." He spared a moment to glance down at his untameable fur. "I suppose you can guess why. And you are?" |

"Maybe." She laughed a little, followed by a nod. "Pleasure to meet you, Raggedwolf. I'm assuming you look raggedy?" 'I wonder what "raggedy" looks like. I bet it's pretty.' She straightened up. "I'm Hailpaw."

"Assume?" Raggedwolf repeated with a bemused tip of his head. It almost sounded like Hailpaw couldn't see.....Oooooo. "Oh! You can't see me, is that it?" He guessed, quite bluntly. His voice was curious rather than accusatory, but the warrior had never been great with tact.

"Unless you're a wall of black, then yes, I'm blind." She shrugged. "But it's not that bad. At least I can still hear." Hailpaw liked how blunt the tom was. She'd never met a cat like that. "Tell me about yourself, Raggedwolf."

"Oh, wow." The words 'I'm sorry' almost came out instinctively but he stopped them. He doubted Hailpaw wanted pity, and his pointless apology wouldn't help either way. She seemed perfectly capable without her sight, and if she was training to become a warrior anyway she was definitely someone to be admired. "Well...." he trailed off thoughtfully. "I'm a warrior, obviously. Not that old, maybe twenty-four moons? I've never known my parents, but I think they were from outside Rockclan. My brother is Gullcry the previous medicine cat, and my favorite food is pigeon. I find rocks are cool." He'd never really been asked to talk about himself before so it had all just come out without a lot of forethought. |

She waited patiently for him to begin. She was curious to know what kind of cat she was talking to. 'A warrior. Alright.' This made her feel a little embarrassed. 'I should have been more polite to him!' Hailpaw purred once he finished. "Interesting. You like rocks? What kind of rocks?" She laughed. Pretty fitting for a RockClanner.

Raggedwolf hummed, trying to think about how to explain to to Hailpaw. "Well when water rushes over rocks for a very long time it erodes them, and they become very smooth and shiny. I like to collect the smaller ones and keep them." He hoped that was a good enough description for Hailpaw. He'd never really talked to a blind cat before and didn't want to be insensitive.
"If you're an apprentice, that must mean you're training to be a warrior, yeah? If you don't mind me asking...Is it hard? How are you finding it?"

Ooh! She knew what smooth meant. It was when things felt nice! "I'd love to check out your rock collection sometime. Only if you don't mind." She hoped he wouldn't care. Maybe it'd even convince her to start her own rock collection.
She shuffled her paws as he continued. Why was being blind so interesting to others? How much was she missing out on? "Uhh... My old mentor never took me out. I haven't met my new one yet." It was sad. She desperately wanted to explore the territory, but knew she'd get lost on her own. Hailpaw twitched her whiskers. Could this tom help her out? He seemed nice enough. "Do you think you could take me out into the territory? We don't have to be out too long. I promise I won't be a bother! Oh, please?"

"Oh ah..." Raggedwolf flicked his ears bashfully. "Sure, that'd be fine." He'd never had anyone actually ask to see his collection and he hadn't expected Hailpaw to show interest either. Though now that he thought about it, how things felt must be a pretty important part of her life, and he found himself much more eager to show her after that.
Mentor disappearances in Rockclan were certainly normal. He himself ha switched from Doestrike to Redfern when his first mentor had never introduced herself. It was an absolute shame that he couldn't understand. At least with his apprentice he'd stayed around until Snailtail had become a warrior.
His flicked his tail in mild irritation at Hailpaw's situation. "Of course I will. Spirits, I would have gone insane by now if I were you. Come on." He wasn't entirely sure on Hailpaw's capabilities so the ragged to flicked her shoulder with his tail as he moved away, curious as to whether or not she'd be able to follow by herself. |

He sounded a little hesitant. "I don't have to visit your rocks if you don't want me to." She quickly responded, not wanting it to seem like he had no choice. Maybe he just didn't want strangers fiddling with his collection. 'It would be cool, though. Something I can finally experience.'
Hailpaw perked up and grinned when he agreed to take her out. "Oh, thank you! I'll repay you, I promise. I'll do whatever you want. Clean your nest, fetch you prey... Anything! Thank you!" She began to ramble, only stopping when something tapped her shoulder. She sniffed, catching Raggedwolf's scent. 'That must have been his tail. Looks like we're off!' She purred and skipped along, making sure she kept the warrior's scent near. "Where are we going first?"

"Oh, no, no!" He exclaimed, shaking his head vehemently. He'd forgotten that Hailpaw would read everything in his voice and could easily misinterpret his hesitation. "It's just that no one has ever asked that before, I was a little surprised. I don't mind." He smiled automatically, even knowing Hailpaw couldn't see it.
He was actually a little excited to be taking Hailpaw out. It had been a while since he'd had an apprentice, and even though Hailpaw wasn't his it was nice to go out with one again. "That might be a little extreme," he laughed. "How about you just bring me a meal sometime?" He could handle a friend, but probably not a slave. "We'll climb up to Iceclan first. I want to see if the snow has melted at all. Do you know what a waterfall is?" |

"Oh!" She laughed, relief flooding over her. "Then I would love to. I'm sure you've got the best rocks in the land." Hailpaw's smile grew. She was filled to the brim with joy. Leaving camp and getting to look forward to a rock collection? Today was just full of happiness, and it was all thanks to this warrior. 'I like him a lot. I hope we'll become friends.'
"Sounds like a plan. What's your favorite kind of prey?" She perked up her ears and leaned forward. She needed to remember this for later. 'I gotta do it when he's not expecting it, though. That way it'll be a pleasant surprise!'
The apprentice cocked her head as he continued. 'IceClan?' She'd heard stories about the clan, but still doubted it being real. Why on earth would cats want to live in the cold? It just didn't make sense. Hailpaw shook her head at the question. "No. What's that?"
