Flintpaw sat in front of the fresh-kill pile. He wasn't eating or even reaching for a bite for food. He was just staring at the dead animals in front of him. The apprentice narrowed his eyes in determination. "I will figure out which one is which...or Cloverstar won't make me into a warrior.." He muttered, his eyes shifting to a vole and a mouse side by side. There difference was small, but the apprentice would figure it out eventually. Flintpaw was so frightened by his ignorance that he thought about it at night, preventing his sleep.

It was morning when Cloverstar stepped out of her den, letting out a yawn as she did. The air felt lovely on her pelt, the sun was rising, and...there was an apprentice sitting in front of the fresh-kill pile. Not even eating.
Well, that was unusual, but probably nothing. She approached the pile and the apprentice, noticing the vole and mouse laid beside each other in front of him. "Good morning," she said cheerfully. "Do you mind if I have one of these?"
Granted, she was the leader, so she could just take it if she wanted to. But it just felt more polite to ask first.

Flintpaw flinched violently away at the sound of her voice. Oh no! Someone had caught him in his silly antics. His eyes widened when he realized it was Cloverstar. The young apprentice had never been this close to his leader and he definitely never had the opportunity to talk to her. Don't say anything stupid! This is your chance![/i]
She had referred to his studying. "No, I-" Flintpaw shook his head. "I mean yes! Of course you can." The apprentice's dark pelt twitched and he backed away from the prey.

Something seemed off, although Cloverstar couldn't quite place what. "Thank you," she replied airily, picking up the mouse and carrying it to a spot just a few whisker-lengths away. She settled down to start tearing into it.
Halfway through, once she'd gulped some of it down, she paused. Might as well make some conversation. "Your name's...Flintpaw, isn't it?" she asked. She was pretty sure she'd seen him around more than once before. "I'm sorry if I'm wrong, I'm, well, not that good with names," she added a little sheepishly.

Flintpaw's dark fur fluffed in surprise. "Yeah! That's me!" He had to control his excitement, but it wasn't working. The apprentice managed to flatten his fur, but his facial expressions were wonky. Flintpaw tried to keep a straight face, but at the same time he was trying to smile.
"It's okay if you're not good with names. You're our leader. There's so many of us." Well, not as many as Treeclan or Iceclan. Flintpaw liked how many cats there were. It was busy and quiet at the same time. I'm not good with much either...
