Aspenpaw poked his head into the entrance of the apprentices den. He had just returned from a long day of training when- oh wait, no, he had just returned from trying to find a mentor who would train him since he didn't have one at the moment. He could go out by himself, but it didn't seem logical. He couldn't teach himself something he didn't even know. "I'm pretty much stuck in camp until I start training. Awesome..."
The tom scanned the den for any other cats, and once he was sure no one was around he padded inside. His nest was in a corner over to the right and he sat down on it. He tried not to think to much of the empty nest next to him as he made himself comfortable, swatting in boredom at a loose piece of grass falling out of his nest. What else was he going to do?

acornpaw couldn’t find silverkit again, and he could spot no sign of his siblings or his mentor, so it meant he had no other choice but to retire to his nest early. it was starting to become routine for him—waking up at the crack of dawn, meandering about doing the tasks his older denmates weren’t keen on doing (or at least doing properly), look around for amberflash or any of the few friends and family he knew, and go back to his nest when nothing more could be done. sometimes he’d snoop around, learn what he could by mimicing other apprentices while they practiced their own hunting stances and battle moves, though acornpaw knew he couldn’t really learn without guidance. he did what he could.
he heard the small murmurs of the apprentice before he saw him, and acornpaw lifted his head up from where it was resting on his paws to locate the sound. he found the tom farther from him, and the diminutive red-furred cat decided, what the heck, let’s go meet him. “guess you basically have the same problem as i do,” he called out, “except, well, i’ve really only gone out into the territory a few times.”

[woohoo someone replied to this thread c:]
The tom was startled to hear the other voice. He hadn't seen anyone in the den before... 'Am I really that oblivious?' Looking up to find the source of the voice, his eyes met with bright blue ones. Aspenpaw hadn't recognized this cat. He had a habit of being rude to others when he was in a bad mood, but he really didn't want to send off the wrong impression this time. He need to be... not himself.
"Figures..." the tom responded, glad the other apprentice could relate. "It seems like it'll be forever before I can get training done because I switch from mentor to mentor so often..." he grumbled, and then sat up a bit, fixing his posture. "I'm Aspenpaw, by the way. Sorry about my annoying complaining... I probably would have kept it to myself had I known you were in here..." he admitted, trying not get embarrassed. He had probably sounded childish...

acornpaw mustered an amused kind of half-smile, shoulders arching in a nonchalant shrug. "yeah, it's a real bummer and a pain in the tail. i get ya," he sympathized, though cleared his throat to continue, "but maybe you just haven't found the right match you know? for you mentor, i mean. not that i can really say anything about that; i've only gotten one mentor so far." wow, acornpaw needed to work on his social skills. how come he never noticed whenever he went off on a ramble? foxdung. he hoped aspenpaw didn't mind.
"i'm acornpaw," he introduced with a quick swoop of his head. "no problem. i'd be the same way, honestly. my ma says i could fight with a rock if i wanted to." the mention of his mother and temperament issues made acornpaw flush underneath his pelt, but all he gave was a sheepish, dorky grin.

"Yeah... I'm probably going to go look for a mentor tomorrow. I rather not sit here all day..." he admitted, tail drooping slightly. "Oh, so I guess your first mentor didn't work out either...? Well, tomorrow, we could... uh... look together?" he suggested, although it came out kind of awkwardly. He didn't really have any friends, and he assumed no one would really care to be his. He almost backed out of asking, because he didn't really care to be turned down.
"Acornpaw...? We both have "A" names..." 'Why'd you mention that? Who cares?' The tom groaned inwardly, but just decided to pretend like he hadn't said anything. "A rock, huh? Maybe I should try it..." he joked, his mouth tilting upwards. Rarely did Aspenpaw actually smile, it was more like some kind of lopsided grin. He probably looked pained. "Your mother, huh? What's her name?" He asked, although if he had thought it out more he probably wouldn't have. What if the question was too... personal or something? 'That was probably weird to ask... right?' Aspenpaw cringed at himself; He did that regularly these days.

acornpaw grinned at that, baby blues widening in the hopes that—hey, maybe he wouldn’t be by his lonesome for long. it was a tentative suggestion, the ruddy tom could tell by the shy tone aspenpaw’s voice took on when he asked, but it was an offer all the same. trying not to sound so eager, acornpaw bobbed his head and answered as coolly as he could with, “yeah, okay. got nothing to do tomorrow, y’know, with the no mentor thing.”
he purred mirthfully. “i guess we do. might be fate, don’t ya think?” acornpaw found a little satisfaction in that, actually. for what reason exactly, he wasn’t sure. he laughed, more than a little embarrassed. “it’s certainy an interesting pastime. i dunno though, why would you fight a rock?” the small tom perked up when aspenpaw encouraged him to share more information on his mother. acornpaw loved her to bits, and he took every opportunity he could to make others appreciate her like she deserved. “fawnskip! she’s the best ma i could ever ask for.”

Aspenpaw inwardly sighed in relief. Okay, so he could make friends. He just... needed to try. He didn't tend to make the first move...
Aspenpaw's face began to heat up at the other tom's comment. 'That was probably weird to say...' he thought, although when Acornpaw began laughing, the tom relaxed a little and chuckled a little himself. "Would I fight a rock? Hmm... I think it depends on the situation," he told him, trying to keep a straight face despite the obvious sarcasm.
Aspenpaw couldn't help but smirk a little bit when seeing how happy Acornpaw got about his mother. "Fawnskip? Hm, I haven't really talked to her, but maybe I'll meet her someday," he commented, trying to think of a time he had ever talked with her. 'I really need to put myself out there more and meet more cats...' the tom thought to himself, his ears falling back.

acornpaw was really liking the vibe he felt coming off of the other tom. it wasn’t a common occurrence for the sand-pelted apprentice to meet others—an astounding feat considering he was always surrounded by clanmates—let alone get along with them. he was a nice kid with a good heart, he liked to think, and he didn’t exactly shy away from interaction. it just didn’t.. click sometimes. aspenpaw was different; acornpaw felt comfortable around the tom, made him smile easy. it was a good feeling.
"well i’d feel sorry for the rock if you did fight it; you look like you don’t go down easy," he continued. perhaps it was a rather odd kind of conversation, but acornpaw was happy to indulge in any conversation, and aspenpaw didn’t seem to be disliking the topic. his cheeks heated up, suddenly smacked with the realization that maybe he might have gotten too caught up in his admiration for his mother. "mm, you should. she’s pretty great," he coaxed. "i’m not.. very out there either. only really got to know a couple of cats so far. is that pathetic? it probably is, heh."
