Basilkit was feeling left behind. His older sister was already an apprentice and it felt as if he was never going to become one. He wanted to go to the territory. He wanted to climb a tree. He wanted to learn how to help his clan and not just sit in the nursery and wait, but that was what he had to do, all he could do. It was maddening, but as the days crept past the day when he would finally become an apprentice got closer.
It was only logical that during the night Basil dreamt of going into the territory with a faceless warrior whom, in his dream, Basilkit knew to be his mentor.
They walk for a long time, but Basilkit doesn't mind the view. It's new and exciting and something he's never seen before. The trees are changing too. They slowly start to lose their leave and then they grow closer together and pretty soon Basil is stuck in a thicket and and he's lost his mentor. He calls out but all he can hear is a distant laughter. Even in the dream Basilkit isn't ready to be anything more than a kit.
Basilkit wakes up in the middle of the night with a start. He immediately pass to the entrance of the nursery and sits down so he can look up and the stars. A few years prick at his eyes but he tries his best to keep them from falling. "It was just a nightmare." He reminds himself quietly. It doesn't mean anything. He's not going to be a bad apprentice.
One tear escapes and makes a trail down his face and Basilkit sniffs quietly and wipes his eyes with his own tail.
