I do not know where I come from, I do not know where I'm going it was hard to stand on the brim of anything, let it be the brim of a nest, or the brim of the clan territory. at least, that was what whitekit thought. it was simply impossible for her to sit idly by and wait until she was old enough to stop sitting on the brim of the nursery. curiosity always overtook her when she looked out upon the clan camp, watching cats of all shapes, colours, and sizes, run around, minding their own business. she wanted to join them, she wanted to do something other than what she was doing; sitting on the brim.
she turned her back to the controlled chaos and padded deeper into the nursery, heaving a sigh. one day, she thought, sadness clouding her eyes. one day i'll be better than this. she couldn't understand why she was so willing to break the rules, and leave the nursery before she came of age, but here she was, willing to take the chance when no one was watching.
whitekit puffed a breath of steam from her mouth, and watched it as it floated away into the chilled air. her black form nearly blended into the back wall where she sat, she was only identifiable by her white toe, white smudge on her chest, and the white scar over her eye. she thought of the marking that resembled a scar. she knew it was only some white fur, but was it not a bit frightening? she hoped not, she hoped she would never frighten anyone in her life. she did not want to be known as a monster.
her electric green gaze swept the nursery, looking for any cats she could talk to. finally, her gaze met another's, and she smiled. I only know, that if I continue, I will not be able to return |

hazelkit tried not to make a habit out of laziness, as some might call it. but the nursery was so cold, and her nest so warm. the more she pondered about getting up and stretching her legs, the more the promise of sleep beckoned, pulling her down into the warmth, the safety of her nest. at last, she willed herself to surface, popping her head only to catch another kitten's gaze.
startled, she fell back into the nest, blinking mismatched eyes in a combination of surprise and sleepiness. embarrassed, she pulled herself up and onto the edge of the nest, into a compromising position. she swayed, and, with a great wobble, fell onto the cold floor with a squeak. a very high-pitched, and very, very loud speak at that. only then did she realized scraps of moss and bracken clung to her tabby fur.
thoroughly embrassed now, she got to her paws, offering her companion an awkward smile that was closer to a grimace. did she see all that? she wondered. stupid. of course she did. she isn't blind. then again, maybe she is, and i'm being insensitive. deep in thought, she almost forgot the kit standing in front of her for a moment. "ah, hi!" she giggled in an attempt to break the silence. "i'm hazelkit."

I do not know where I come from, I do not know where I'm going whitekit smiled as she watch another kit stumble from her nest, and choked back a giggle when she giggled.
"hello there," she answered her. "i'm whitekit. can i help you?" she referred to the little pieces of bracken and moss clinging to the kit's fur. I only know, that if I continue, I will not be able to return |
