we're standing on the sun The trees were silent, brooding, disturbed only as I brushed past their massive trunks. I preferred it this way -- a quiet forest had a sort of beauty that meadows or ice-capped mountains couldn't compare to. The way the light dappled the ground of worn trails and decomposing leaves, the way the canopies shut out the outside world; it was peaceful, one of the only things that could calm me.
I meandered down on of the paths, carved by thousands of paws before mine, that swerved between the trees and around roots. Occasionally I'd stop if I thought I heard something, gaze scanning my surroundings until I determined my aloneness. I was at peace, something I needed every once in a while, especially since the stressful news of the meeting.
Stopping, I allowed my gaze to sweep over the green-hued landscape, searching for the source of the noise. I found it a moment later -- a young tom, around my age -- and nearly breathed a sigh of relief that it hadn't been a warrior who would reprimand me for venturing so far.

Needlepaw lay on his back, stunning his pale stomach. He had spent the morning training at the sky tree, hoping that climbing up and down would strengthen his limbs. He didn't think his mentor, Swanbreeze, was strong enough to spar with; she was small and skittish, not exactly a warrior to aspire to be. At least she was kind, and Needlepaw figured that he could at least respect her for that. Still, he wanted to be strong, so he had decided to take all physical training upon himself. But for now his muscles were aching, and he was ready to relax.
The tabby's ears twitched. He leaned his head to the side, one ear pressed flush against the earth. Sure enough, he could hear the gentle sound of paw-steps. Needlepaw was tempted to get up, but continued to lay on his back when he caught the familiar whiff of TreeClan scent drifting downwind. He figured that as long as it wasn't Dogfang, or that tabby she-cat from the gathering, he would be safe. He shifted a bit so he could look at the direction of the approaching cat. "Hello!" Needlepaw called out, wondering if he had been spotted. His green eyes gleamed hopefully. He was tired but he still wouldn't mind a conversation.

we're standing on the sun I stood still for a moment, watching the brown tom. He was in quite the odd position, on his back, and I found it amusing. I let out a low chuckle, making sure that the other cat wouldn't be able to hear it. Honestly, though, he looked very comfortable and I was.. a little jealous that I hadn't thought of such a thing myself. I could use some sun.
"Hello!" He had noticed me, obviously, and I moved towards him slowly. I was in a good mood -- which always provided for better conversation. When I felt anxious or self conscious, my words were awkward and quiet. Which, in turn, only managed to make me feel even worse about myself. No, my good days were much better.
"Hey!" I chirped, moving closer to get a better look. I was taken aback by how much he looked like Thicketpaw -- my best friend who had, almost literally, disappeared off the face of the Earth. I got over my initial shock easily, but, knowing that I was horrible at hiding emotions and reactions, I knew it was likely he had noticed. I flicked my tail, trying my best to erase the awkwardness with a sloppy grin.

Needlepaw watched the other apprentice approached with lazy interest. His sun bathing had made him a bit drowsy, and he was content with not getting up. He did, however, shift himself a bit so that he wasn't straining his neck when he looked over at the other tom. "Nice day, isn't it?" the tabby mewed with a sigh, blinking curiously when he noticed the odd look the other apprentice had given him. "What? Do I have something on my face?" Needlepaw focused his gaze on the tip on his muzzle, cross-eyed.
He grinned, knowing he must've looked silly, then focused his gaze back on the other tom. "My names Needlepaw, by the way. Care to join me?" he brushed his tail over the sunny spot besides him, "tensions are so high in the clan these days," the tabby tipped his head back and looked up at fluffy white clouds through the sparse tree branches, "it feels nice to enjoy a quiet day what it rolls around." He could speak out passionately when need be, but even a loose cannon like Needlepaw needed time to relax and recharge.

we're standing on the sun I nodded in agreement, an open-mouth smile resting on my face, canines brushing against my skin. The tom seemed a little lethargic and sleepy as he spoke, his voice carrying out loudly in the silent forest in a way that almost made me flinch. I didn't want anyone to hear us talking or eavesdrop on our conversation -- that is, if anyone was even in the forest. "It is," I agreed, nodding.
His next statement made my face heat up as I realized he had noticed my sudden change of expression. "I, uh.. no, you're fine," I stammered, which only caused my face to heat more. "You just.. you looked like someone, is all," I chuckled in embarrassment, looking away. Already I was screwing things up -- just like usual.
"I'm Buzzardpaw," I responded, trying my hardest to regain my previous confidence. Interactions always seemed go downhill when I was anything but. I nodded, padding over to his rather large spot of sunshine, and settled down a few feet away from him. When he mentioned the Clan's tensions, I immediately wondered who's side he was on -- Yellowburr's or Arrowstar's. I opened my mouth, ready to ask, but closed it a moment later. His statement about needing a quiet day stopped me from proceeding, so instead I said nothing on the matter. I smiled and nodded, my gaze wandering. "Its so.. peaceful, too. Its nice."
