pepperkit sat in a warm corner of the nursery, watching his denmates through long, dark lashes. he would have been playing with them, except he wasn't interested; they weren't playing warriors or catch-the-squirrel or anything like that. those were fun games, interesting games that required at least some imagination or skill. all these kits were doing were playing with moss, throwing a clump of it into the air, trying to catch it, and failing miserably. he wrapped his tail around his small frame, not intending to move any time soon. if only they would be less noisy. "could you... be quiet?" he spoke up, his appeal no more than a whisper.

Ashkit had been watching a nearby group of kits playing mossball for barely four heartbeats, and already he was bored. He couldn't understand the attraction of the game; there didn't seem to be any goal, other than to toss a stale piece of moss about the nursery. It could be fun, he supposed, if they attempted to add a keep-away aspect, and maybe a point system. The kit's attention was pulled away from the game by a faint sound, perhaps a voice. Nearby, another kit lay in his nest, evidently as uninterested in the game as he was. There didn't appear to be any other cats nearby, so he had to assume this was the cat who'd made the noise. "What was that?" he called out quietly, his voice only loud enough to carry to the kit.

Raccoonkit had been playing with the littler kits. It was known that she could be loud at times. She enjoyed seeing the smaller kits miss the ball; she was just like that when she was that little. Sloppy was what some called it. However it was one of the best games for the kits to know each other and work on their dexterity. For a moment she mused on how her skills had gotten better. This caused her to miss the ball and she hissed.
Amber eyes glanced at Pepperkit when he mewed. "Oh, sorry." Raccoonkit encouraged the others to go to their own nests. The sun was almost hidden behind the cliffs of camp. She went to go to her own nest and almost tripped over Ashkit. "Sorry!" she tried to quietly mew. She side stepped him and went to her own nest. She lied down, but her curiosity got the better of her.
"What are your names?"

pepperkit blinked at his response, surprised that he had gotten one at all. "could you be quiet?" he repeated, before realizing, too late, that the tom wasn't one of the kits making noise. his ears flattened against the sides of his head, thoroughly embarassed. he won't like me now, he thought bitterly, trying to hide beneath his tail.
his humilitation, however, was forgotten when a she-kit piped up, having been one of the kits he had actually addressed. slowly, he raised his head, offering a small smile. "it's okay," he assured, getting a little bit of his confidence back. he straightened up, tail curling neatly over snowy paws. "i'm pepperkit."

The dark brown tabby blinked back. Pepperkit seemed friendly enough. Racoonkit wondered if they could be friends. He seemed shy, but Raccoonkit was used to initiating conversation. She was glad that he sat up. To her, that meant he was ready for a conversation.
Raccoonkit narrowed her eyes thoughtfully at Pepperkit. "Pepp..erkit? What is pepper?" She had never heard of pepper before. "Is it some kind of herb?" Raccoonkit sat down and tilted her head. Her fluffy tail wrapped around her paws. Learning was something she liked to do, which reminded her that she wanted to make a visit to the medicine cat soon. They were a cat she hadn't met.
