bright blue eyes surveyed their surroundings with some distaste. the nursery had never been the most interesting place, even less so now that he was all alone. it couldn't have been that early; the sun had risen quite some time ago and pepperkit had woken even longer before that. yet not a single sound reached his perked ears, not a single movement caught his watchful gaze. typical, he thought, with a stir of irritation. the one time i need some company, nobody's awake. he flopped down in the middle of the nursery with a loud sigh. "isn't anyone awake?" he exclaimed.

I would've left the nursery long before, if it hadn't been for Brackensky's watchful eye. She rarely let me, or my four brothers, out of her sight for extended periods of time -- my theory was that she thought we were messed up in the head. A dead dad could do that to someone, and.. I suppose it had. I knew I wasn't considered 'normal' by the other kittens, and that could certainly be the subconscious reason.
Although, I didn't have much energy, so I wasn't sure what I'd be doing if I had been able to leave. I was partially tired, partially lazy in general. I had never been one of the typical kits, bundles of energy, and preferred calmer, more laid back activities over games and socialization. The sudden sound of a voice piercing through the silence -- honestly, I wasn't sure how nobody else stirred -- caused me to raise my head in curiosity and slight alarm. When I found the source of the noise, another kitten, I lowered my head onto my paws in hopes that they hadn't noticed me.

pepperkit blinked, certain that he had seen something, or someone, move. he had almost persuaded himself that it had been nothing, just his overactive imagination - an unfortunate consequence of his sleep deprived state, when he saw it move again. it moved more slowly this time. someone's trying to avoid detection, he thought, with an apprehensive twitch of his whiskers. he wasn't sure why he was surprised when his gaze rested on a fellow kit, fur grey-and-white not unlike his own. they looked like they were asleep, but pepperkit knew better. quickly, he padded over, blue eyes bright. "found you," he whispered, as if this was a game of hide-and-seek.

He hadn't noticed -- or so I thought. Honestly, the lengths I went to in order to avoid interaction sometimes were surprising. I just.. didn't see the appeal of socializing. So many cats' lives were based around social interactions -- it ruled everything in their lives: the way they saw themselves, others, etc. Sure, I saw the upsides to some relationships I suppose. Usefulness, support. But otherwise.. it was pretty pointless in my opinion. Why waste my time speaking to other kittens and playing useless games when I could be using my time in other ways?
"Found you." I opened my eyes fully, glancing up at the similarly colored tom. I sighed, raising my head and returning to a sitting position. He definitely wanted something, and I assumed it was social gratification. "Yes, you did," I responded with a singular nod, watching him warily.

a slight frown rested on pepperkit's face. suddenly unsure, he hesitated before sitting down, bracing himself for a complaint from the light-furred tom. he offered a half-smile, as if he couldn't quite decide whether to frown or to smile and had tried to compromise.
"hope you don't mind," he mewed in an almost conspiratorial tone, in an attempt to appease his companion. he seemed less than happy at pepperkit's presence, and he tried to take up less space, curling his tail tightly around his frame and tucking in his paws. "sorry if i woke you up," he apologised, feeling very guilty.
