Juniperkit huffed, plopping herself on the sandy floor of the nursery. She absent-mindedly groomed herself, watching a few other kits run around playing moss-ball. The lightweight, green ball came whisking past Juniperkit's nose, so close that she had to resist the temptation to reach her paw up and snag the ball of moss on her claw.
Juniperkit sighed.
Why am I the only one without friends? came the constant question ringing in her mind. The same small voice would flash back the same answer. Because you're adopted. Look at yourself; you clearly have the build of a runner, not a climber. Juniperkit inspected her paws. They had no bulk; just a small bit of muscle and bone. Hahaha! the voice in her head laughed. Like a rabbit! No; worse! Like a Fireclanner!
Juniperkit zoned out, forlorn. Instead of the present moment, her mind wandered elsewhere. She daydreamed about her real parents; no one had ever told her this, but she knew that she was adopted. Juniperkit looked nothing like Sorrelpatch, her adopted mother. One mossy-green eye like her's was the extent of their similarities. One might say that she just took after her father, but Juniperkit just knew in her gut that he wasn't in Treeclan. She could say the same for her mother. She remembered the territory outside of camp; maybe even outside of the clan. All she knew was that the forest of tall, ancient trees that she was born in was not inside of the camp.
Juniperkit would've continued thinking about her past, had the pawsteps behind the brown tabby been nonexistent. But at the faintest rustle, Juniperkit jumped up to be met with a pair of eyes.
