Juniperkit's head shot up, eyes wide. Her chest heaved. She looked around wildly, taking in her surroundings. She was in the nursery, like she had been when she went to sleep last night. Juniperkit breathed a sigh of relief. She looked around, this time less urgently, to make sure that she had not woken anyone up. A few moments later, she rolled to the other side of her nest, trying to get comfortable and go back asleep. But her dream still haunted her, and the moment the dusty-brown tabby closed her eyes, the dream came rushing back at her. A knot in Juniperkit's stomach formed when she heard the screams of her mother. Juniperkit couldn't go back to that horrible scene.
She suppressed a sigh. This was not the first time that Juniperkit couldn't sleep. She pulled herself up to stand at full height, which was hardly as tall as a robin anyway, and cautiously picked her way through the nests. She staggered out into the cool night breeze, chilling her to the bone compared to the humid nursery. But this was all too common; once a week, at least. She normally would sit outside, gazing at the stars for a few moments, before returning. She would walk past her nest and curl up next to her adopted mother, Sorrelpatch. With a new sense of security, Juniperkit would normally fall right back asleep; she would be tired anyway.
But today was different.
Instead of feeling a longing to just get a few breaths of fresh air, thsn be scared back into the confines of the nursery by a shadow or noise, Juniperkit sat outside of the nursery, her ears swiveling to detect and pinpoint any noise or movement in her surroundings. She eventually wandered over to the base of a flat boulder that was a particularly popular sunning spot within the camp. In the daytime, it would've been completely occupied, but now, during night hours, it was neglected.
Juniperkit lept to the top of the platform in a single bound. As her paws collided with the cool stone, the dusty-brown female turned her green and brown eyes to the vivid sky. She settled her paws on the smooth surface and watched the moon. Juniperkit saw a moving, blinking red object slide across the vast, starry sky. She stared in wonder, watching it disappear behind the trees.
Juniperkit had lost herself to the beautiful sight. She sat there, tail resting over small paws, mismatched eyes wide in an attempt to take in as much of the scene as possible. The tabby-coated kitten was so deep in thought and wonder to notice the pawsteps approaching behind her. They were extremely stealthy, but stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the peaceful silence. Juniperkit only turned to face the newcomer when she was simply a tail-length away, and visibly flinched in surprise. She soon regained her composure, but was not about to break the silence. Juniperkit simply flicked her tiny ear in greeting, and shuffled her paws awkwardly.
