Lion in wait (p)

Fennelkit woke up from a particularily long nap, tiredly staring out of the nest for a few minutes. He forced himself out of the warm, cozy nest, stretching and focusing on his surroundings.

One of such surroundings was his brother Lionkit, who he hadn't bothered speaking to for some reason. Fennelkit decided that would be what he did today.

Unsure of how to approach him, the small golden tom padded up to the other golden kit awkwardly, sheepishly squeaking "Hello."

Ordinarily he wasn't like this meeting other kits, but this was his brother; someone related to him.

Lionkit was being a bit lazy today, batting a random piece of moss across the ground with half-closed eyes. His other siblings were off doing their own shenanigans, and the weather outside wasn't particularly pleasant. It was getting boring, not having anyone to talk or play with, though.

That's why when he heard a small, shy voice greet him, he almost immediately jumped up. "Hello there," He meowed, looking him over curiously, "Hey, you actually look kinda like me. Must be brothers, eh? Uh, anyways, I'm Lionkit. What's your name?"

"Oh-" Fennelkit leaped back a little when Lionkit jumped up, though it wasn't too noticable. Feeling slightly relieved that Lionkit recognized him as a sibling right away, he continued with a bit more confidence. "Mm-hm! I'm Fennelkit! I didn't spoil your moss, did I?" he sniffed the piece of moss quickly.

He stared at Lionkit's fur for a moment, taking in the details before adding, "I like your fur. It's got a certain charm to it, I think!"

Lionkit shook his head. He watched Fennelkit sniff at before giving it one last, lazy prod, and said, "Nah, I think the moss will be fine. Wasn't doing much with it anyway." He noticed the tom-cat looking at his fur, and tried to puff himself up, about to make a comment about how wonderful it looked today when Fennelkit beat him to it. Nice.

He replied with a wide grin. "Why, thank you! My other siblings don't ever seem to agree with me when I say that I look the best. I mean, it's their loss. Not everyone can be perfect." He nodded, looking back at Fennelkit and waving his tail. "At least you have a bit of sense!"

Oh. Nobody had quite reacted to a compliment of his like that before. He looked around before meeting Lionkit's eyes, admiring them.

"Oh.. You kinda do. Do they like your eyes instead, then? I like them." Fennelkit was complimenting Lionkit because he seemed to really enjoy it. Besides, hopefully he would like him more.

He glanced at the tail for a second as it waved and met his eyes again. "Oh, thanks."

Lionkit paused for a second, titling his head in thought before shrugging. "They're never really mentioned my eyes. I should totally ask them next time I see them though... uh, this is gonna sound weird, but how would you describe my eyes? They're probably stunning, but I just need to make sure." He'd caught a glimpse of them once, when it was raining, but he had a feeling a stray puddle didn't really do his eye color justice.

At Fennelkit's 'thanks', he nodded, paused again and decided to try something a bit different. "No problem, Fennelkit. I, uh, your eyes are pretty cool looking as well. Maybe that's where you got your name from."

"Oh, your eyes remind me of...." Fennelkit though for a moment, "...Sunlight, but shining through this one pretty round rock I found." he quickly went over to his nest and plucked a marble out of the moss, it practically rolling out of his mouth over to Lionkit. "I found it in the dirt.. There's a hole there, now."

Fennelkit smiled widely at the other compliment. "You don't need to say that.. My eyes are pretty normal."

Lionkit began to nod in agreement. The sun was pretty glorious, after all, not to mention how it basically dominated the sky. He stopped when Fennelkit mentioned some kind of rock, and watched the kit pad off to his nest. When his brother rolled it over, he stopped it with an outstreched paw, and he bent his head down to inspect it.

"Huh. That is pretty. This is the kind of thing you'd find from adventuring out in a cave or something! I wonder if there's any more around here." He gave it a sniff, before rolling it back over to Fennelkit. His grin widened.

When Fennelkit gave his modest answer, his grin turned into a pout. "No, seriously, they're really, uh, bright? C'mon, you're meant to say something like--" He cleared his throat and tried to imitate Fennelkit's voice "--'Thanks Lionkit, aren't they just the greatest'? Uh, maybe not like that."

Fennelkit made a happy noise, feeling big and important for a few moments, imagining himself as a brave cat exploring a cave.

He stopped when he discovered he'd given the wrong answer, immediately looking embarassed. "Oh, but everyone has blue eyes at some point. My eyes are kinda brighter than others', though... I guess."

Wanting to change the subject off of his eyes, he decided to ask if Lionkit had ever gone exploring and found something interesting. He had the discovery of treasure on his mind, what was he supposed to do?

He was ready for further argue his point, but he found himself shutting his mouth when Fennelkit almost seemed to deflate. Even that little happy noise he made had been cut off. Whoops. "Eh, at least you get to keep yours. You know, I wonder if any of the queens have ever named a kit 'Bluekit' or something for their eyes, but then they changed color."  

Lionkit gave a nervous grin at Fennelkit's answer. "Uh, totally! I mean, we are kits, exploring is just what we do, right? Plus, with Dustkit and Sandkit, it's kinda hard not to do that." He sighed. "I've never really found anything, though! Closest I've come to finding something was when I stepped on a bug, and found a bug on my paw." 

He shrugged. "What about you? Apart from the rock, have you found anything else?"
