The canyon, dry and cracked and dead, was the perfect backdrop for Rose as she padded lightly across the dusty ground, wildflower in mouth. She held the pretty snowdrop gently between her teeth, and walked with a strange intensity, deep blue eyes flashing. Now, where was that tree?
She found it quickly, a sad, lifeless corpse of a thing, a shell of what used to be a tall, strong oak. But the tree itself wasn't her aim in crossing the entire canyon, no, her aim, her goal, was the small nest of baby sparrows she had noticed the last time she'd been there. And yes, there they were, chirping little things that hopped around within the nest, mother bird nowhere to be seen. She dropped the wildflower gently beneath the tree, and was just about to turn and leave, mission finished, when a loud squeak caught her attention.
One of the sparrows, so small it was barely able to fly, tumbled over the nest, diving in a nimble skyfall towards her. Panic searing through her, she leapt forward and reached out to the poor thing with her nose, letting it land gently atop of her muzzle and setting it down next to the wildflower. She looked up; the parents were still nowhere to be seen. Fear coursing through her, she sat, tail curled primly around her paws, beside the baby bird, deep blue eyes flashing.

the canyon was one of zalmoxes' favorite places, so vast, so windy, and full of all sorts of trouble. he remembered visiting this place as a wee kitten, almost getting killed by swooping vultures and getting crushed by a rock. good times. but it seemed today that he would find a different kind of trouble.
he noticed a scorched oak, dead from dehydration, and a figure crouched below the tree. it was a she-cat, catching a falling something. his curiosity getting the better of him, he silently approached the tree, trying not to stand out amidst the red sandstone. hiding out behind a rock just a few fox-lengths away from the tree, his eyes finally saw what she was standing over; a sparrow chick.
a sparrow chick that still had feathery down covering its speckled body, eyes tightly shut and struggling to stand up. he was pretty sure that this cat was just going to eat the bird and move on with her day, but she didn't move, continuing to watch the fledgling. confused, he stepped out from behind the rock, awkwardly pointing at the bird.
"Uh, are you going to eat that?"
(Haha I'm not any better, I like this idea though)

Ears flickered instantly at the sound of a voice, eyes glaring with protectiveness as they settled on the tom, stepping out from behind the rock. A moon ago, Rose would not have been so untrusting but, as it has been proven to her, trust is dumb.
"No, and neither will you," she resisted a curl of her lip, instead keeping her tone icy cold. Her front paw moved, placing it directly in front of the fledgling, staking her claim.

zalmoxes' cocked his head at her strange reply. was she saving it for someone else?.. no. he could see it in her eyes, a motherly protection. For a bird... Prey... This cat is strange. Was she confused in some way? It was just such a... bizarre thing to do. I've certainly seen some weird things done by she-cats but this is a first.
"Uh... Alright." puzzled gray eyes flicking from the infant bird to the protective she-cat.
"Why?"

"Why does anyone do anything?" she didn't want to answer this tom's question because, frankly, she didn't know herself, and so she spoke in an annoying riddle. Her deep blue eyes quickly scanned the stranger up and down, narrowing them slightly when a name didn't come to mind. Was he new?
She didn't like new.
"These places aren't too welcome to foreigners," she meowed in a flat tone.

"I dunno," he shrugged, obviously not taking this as serious as she was. "That's a big string of questions I'm sure nobody wants to answer." he didn't really like to think deeply, much less talk. after he says it makes him feel silly for saying it.
"And I'm not a foreigner, I'm just passing through, that's all." not wanting to start a fight with this cat, he relaxed his fur as much as possible and kept a calm, clean look. he didn't even dare look at the stupid bird she was protecting (for some reason...)

woah plot jump rose is maleficent now cool
Maleficent glanced the stranger up and down, deciding that he wasn't an active threat and retreated her paw, but still kept a watchful eye on the sparrow to her side. A chocolate tail-tip landed in front of the hatchling, a minor hint of possession.
"What is your name?" her tone was light and indifferent.
