for my bro
Jax padded along the sidewalk, the gray slabs of cement cold from a previous rain. The tabby fluffed up his long pelt as a monster drove by, sending a wave of cold air over him. Just be glad it wasn't water, he tried to sooth himself, but it didn't work very well. His paws tired from the day's trek, the tom padded close to a nearby two-leg den, curling up under one of the outdoor tables. The den, unlike most of the others, had an unsettling orange light pouring out of it, and that, paired with the roaring howling of two-leg's coming from inside, made Jax think that whoever own the place was most likely still awake. The tabby buried his face under his large paws, trying to block out some of the noise. Do they ever shut up? he thought with a pout, shrinking back as the door swung open and more orange light poured out into the street.

Whiskey let out a jovial purr as a fleshy paw ran down his back. His golden eyes flicked to the two-leg owner of the appendage, a female with a messy mop of blonde fur atop her otherwise hairless head. The bar's getting pretty crowded, he thought to himself as the two-leg continued to stroke him, maybe I'll go for a walk. Stepping forward, Whiskey met the two-leg's gaze. "Outside," he mewled sweetly, flicking his ears towards the door. The two-leg squealed excitedly, and Whiskey frowned, knowing the idiot hadn't understood him. "I. Want. To. Go. Out," he repeated, leaping off the bar and onto the floor until he was at the den's entrance. Finally his owner, the bartender, rushed over and opened the door so he could leave. Finally, the black-and-white tom thought, padding out of the den and out into the cold streets. Breathing in the fresh, crisp air, the young tom took a seat, ignoring how the wet sidewalk dampened his fur. A glint in the shadow's caught the tom's attention, and he turned to peer into the shadow's. "Anyone there?" he asked, his tone bored, seeing as he didn't really believe anyone would be stupid enough to wander the streets this late.

Jax turned to look at the den entrance, blinking away the pain that seared his eyes as the unnatural light struck him. Once his eyes had adjusted he spotted a black-and-white tom walk out of the den. He was about Jax's size, if not a little smaller, and strikingly familiar. Maybe he passed by the glade once when I was a kit? the tabby thought, though he highly doubted it. The other tom seemed his age, and the fact that he had excited the two-leg den most likely meant that he was kittypet. "Anyone there?" the stranger said in a familiar voice, making Jax freeze up. Thinking that he had been spotted, the tom came out from under the table. "Yes," he answered, his timid green gaze catching the other tom's golden one. I know him... I'm sure I do

Whiskey blinked, startled, as looked more carefully at the shadows. Sure enough the faint outline of a dark tabby had melded into the dark depths. He watched the larger tom come out into the dim light, surprised by his size. It took a second he realized that there was virtually no way he could beat this guy in a fight, and he was relieved that the stranger looked timid rather than hostile. "Well, it's a little strange to find cats walking about this late at night," the black-and-white tom mewed, signaling with his tail for the tom to come closer. "I'm Whiskey by the way," he introduced, putting on a charming smile, "my owner runs the bar over there"

Jax walked forward at the other tom's command, listening to what he had to say warily. Bar? he thought questioningly, figuring the tom was referring to the large two-leg den he had emerged from. He wasn't too sure what an owner was either, but, from other things he had heard, he figured that it was what kittypet's called the two-leg's that owned them. Are all the two-legs in their his owner? Jax thought, looking at the shadows of large forms through the cloudy, amber-tinted window.

"I can see you're not really the talkative type," Whiskey commented on the other tom's silence with an amused smile, "but don't worry-- I'm sure I can manage to talk enough for the both of us. Though it would be nice if you could give me a name to go with that pretty little face of yours," the black-and-white tom teased with a smirk. He looks a little familiar, now that I get a good look at him, Whiskey noted. A lot of cats came by his bar, though, so he didn't think much of it.

"Jax," the large tabby simply stated. His fur pricked a bit at the compliment, and he could feel a light blush dusting the skin under his thick pelt. He wasn't used to receiving admiration for his looks, and the comment unnerved him as well as embarrassed him a bit. Brushing off the flattering remark, the tom focus his dark green gaze on the streets, his eyes widening for a moment as a car zipped by. Startled, he jumped back, the fur on the back of his neck rising in alarm. I thought monsters stayed inside their den's at night, he thought. He preferred to stay away from the black-pawed beasts, knowing that they're even though they never seemed to leave the grey paths, they were more dangerous than they seemed.

"...Jax..." Whiskey repeated the name. It took him a few moments, but eventually he turned on the large tom, his amber eyes, which had turned golden in the faint light, widening. It had taken him awhile, but he could see it now. The same pelt, the same stature, he was even quiet like he used to be. It really is him isn't it...? the black-and-white tom thought, continuing to stare dumbly at his brother. After a few more moments of this Whiskey seemed to regain control of his mind again. "Wow, Jaxy, I thought I'd never see you again," the tom purred, leaning over and brushing his muzzle against the dark tabby's shoulder. He could smell it now, the familiar scent of Rose that linger on the three of them. "It's me, Berry," he explained, not moving away from his brother.

Jax froze up as the other tom brushed white muzzle against the tom's shoulder. The fur on the back of his neck bristling in embarrassment, the large tom just starred uncomfortably at Whiskey. He was defiantly sure he knew the black-and-white kittypet now, his appearance and scent were strikingly familiar, but the fact that he was being so affectionate while Jax still couldn't remember who he was made him slightly uncomfortable. His demeanor changed when Berry said his name. Dark green eye's stretching wide, the dark brown tabby just starred at his brother for a few quiet moments. When the fact that his brother (who he had been fairly sure he would never see again after Berry had left) was standing right in front of him sunk in he let out a low, throaty purr. "Good to see you," Jax mewed, placing his head affectionately atop the other tom's.

"Right back at 'ya," Whiskey purred, relaxing into his brother's touch. It had been a long time since he had seen the other tom, and a lot had happened in his life since then. "So, what have you been up to since I, er left? Is Rowan here too? I don't hear her. What about Regal? Did you ever actually find him?" the black-and-white house-cat rambled on, questions just lining up in his mind. Yet, in the back of his mind the tom knew he was trying to keep Jax from prying into what had happened in his life since they parted. There was nothing he really wished to remember or relieve.

"Rowan and Regal aren't here," Jax answered passively, shifting a bit so that he wouldn't crush his brother under his weight. "We found Regal, Rowan is with him. I'm was looking for Fae and Sky, but..." the dark brown tabby's low voice faded. All the evidence he had gathered suggested that Fae had died, and their was rumor that she had given up Sky to the "clan cats" before she passed on. Jax had grieved awhile when he had first heard this, but the thought of no longer being able to see her had settled in his mind. She's with mother now, he thought, glancing up at the stars. "What about you? What have you done?" the maine coon asked, keeping his eyes fixed on the stars.
