"Fantastic idea, Clovepetal!" chirped Forestbreak. Glancing at Swirlkit, she nodded. "Deathberries. Those would do the trick, if we stuffed a mouse with 'em. But we'd have to evacuate the nursery first- we don't want a curious kit to take a bite out of that mouse." She glanced at the two kits.
"For now, we should plug up the hole with a rock or something until we can lure out the snake. And Cottonkit, we should take a peek into the hole before we do anything to see how many snakes there are."

Deathberies. It sounded dangerous. Good. It was something else to think about, anyway. This was a very serious subject. She nodded vigorously. Whatever death berries were- well, the name said it all really. ou know, death. In a berry. It was actually pretty simple.
"But we never know how many snakes there might be. I'm scared that we might have more on our paws than we can handle." Maybe two or three at the most would be the time for desperate measures. By the way cold fear twinkled in the cat's eyes when snakes were mentioned, Swirlkit knew that these animals were dangerous. It would be horrifying if some other cat were to get hurt. She gulped, holding down a wild panic. She wanted to make sure the snakes weren't sneaking around-- right now. But she knew it was safer here, in the coverage pf the medicine den.

"Do calm down, kit. The warriors will take care of everything." She smiled reassuringly. "The warriors of our Clan could easily take on a few mangy old snakes, huh?" She cuffed her ear gently and playfully. "And I'll bet those stupid snakes couldn't hurt a cat if they tried. The nursery should be safe, but we'll look into it just in case."
"Anyway," she continued, "snakes like to stay in the dark. That's why they have holes. I'm sure they'd never actually leave their hole unless we baited them." The medicine cat smiled calmly.

Swirlkit let her fur lay flat, realizing it had started to bristle. Her kithood has had much tension, and there were only two moments so far in her whole life that she might have actually felt calm. She cocked her head to one side when the medicine cats mentioned darkness.
"Do they come out at night, then?" She said, a glint of worry still remaining in her eyes. It might work to their advantage; but it might also put sleeping cats in danger. Kits didn't know how to be alert when they were woken. They never really had to deal with any kind of urgencies, either. Swirlkit glanced at Cottonkit, also realizing that her fur was still covered in goop. She was careful not to get any on her new best friend.

Forestbreak grinned and shook her head. "No, child. Snakes sleep at night, just like you and me. They wouldn't waste precious rest time slithering around." She smiled. "Anyway, their night vision isn't good. Even if they did come out, they wouldn't be able to see a thing." She ruffled the kit's head fur. "You have nothing to worry about. Trust me."
"Now," she continued, "I think you'd better rest. You can sleep here, if it'll make you feel safer."

Swirlkit smiled as the medicine cat ruffled her fur. She licked the medicine cat's shoulder appreciatively, and tried to catch Cottonkit's gaze. "Sleeping in here sounds safer," she agreed. Hesitantly, she added, "Can Cottonkit sleep in here too?" She didn't want anything to happen to her friend, and he needed to recover from the shock he felt when she had fell into the hole.
He needed to be here anyway. She didn't know how she could rest without his company. Cottonkit had been by her side through tough times, and he could be a lot of support to her. She turned to Cottonkit, hoping that the medicine cat would agree.

Forestbreak flicked her tail, purring as the kit licked her shoulder. When she asked if her friend could sleep in the den, as well, she rolled her eyes and laughed. "Fine. But I don't want you two whispering all night, all right? Clovepetal and I need our sleep." She nodded towards the russet medicine cat.
Forestbreak smiled, looking back and forth at the two kits. Young friendship was such a nice thing- total innocence, total trust in each other. She'd always been more of a studious kit, so to speak- she'd preferred to gaze at the stars than play mossball. As a result, her only kithood friend was Clovepetal. But she was fine with that- she'd forged plenty of friendships later in life.

Cottonkit smiled and began to jump up and down. "We won't we won't! We'll be the best kittens ever!" He meowed happily. A night in the Medicine Cats den! With his best friend! The thought overjoyed Cottonkit and his smile grew bigger. This would be fun!

Swirlkit nodded enthusiastically. A smile spread on her lips, and she felt the familiar playful feeling creep into her heart. "Well... You might want to cover your ears just in case. You know, all these dreams we have about dancing mice." She pretended to look at her paws in silent shame.
"Yeah. Those dreams can make us a little loud," she meowed jokingly. Actually, she had a dream like that once. Only it was with dancing leaves, for some reason. She looked back up at the medicine cat. "No, don't worry though. We'll be as quiet as snakes." Were snakes quiet? Maybe they were. After all, it had enough sense to be quiet long enough for kits to fall in its hole anyway.
