Lightingpaw stepped into the apprentice's den for the first time. It wasn't as warm as the nursery, and the other cats here were indifferent to him. This was intimidating, but exciting at the same time. He waited to see his friend Mistpaw. She'd be a warrior soon, maybe, and she'd be busy with warrior duties. This was the time to see her, just have fun until they were too old to.

Mistpaw bounded into the apprentices den and spotted her friend, Lightningpaw, who had just recently became an apprentice. It made her happy and excited, because now she was able to see him a lot more than she use to. "Lightningpaw!" The gray she-cat smiled at her friend and licked his cheek in a friendly greeting.

"Hey there," he licked her cheek back. "Little bit lost today. How do you sleep here everyday?" he asked playfully. At least she seemed happy to see him. Lightingpaw looked at the grey she-cat, wondering what they'd be doing today.

Mistpaw laughed at Lightningpaw's comment. "It's actually not that hard, since there are some apprentices left. That's why I chose to sleep at the very back of the den." She pointed with her tail tip, to her nest in the very back corner. "So Lightningpaw, what would you like to do today?"

"I'll set up my nest over there too then," he decided, laughing at her emphasis on the word paw. He already felt so much older. It was surreal. "I'm not sure. What do regular apprentices do?" he asked her. He just realized that he had no clue what an apprentice did other than train.

Mistpaw flicked her ears and laughed. "Well, now you have more freedom, but we can't go out into the territory yet." She remembered her promise to Lightningpaw that once they were warriors, they would go out into the territory together. "It doesn't matter to me what we do."

Lightingpaw processed that. "That's nice," he said, blinking at her. He wondered if she remembered their promise to go into clan territory together once they were both warriors. He certainly did, and he was waiting for the day. "Let's go where the butterfly leads us," he suggested, noticing a bright red and black one in the air.

Mistpaw nodded and watched the bright colored butterfly. She crouched down like Silversky had taught her in their first training session. She playfully growled and started to slowly stalk the butterfly as it began to fly further into camp. "Let's go chase it!"

"Yep," he followed her. "Attack that butterfly!" he said, imitating her stalk, since he hadn't learned one yet. he saw it fly off to his left, and lost it in a shadow. "Where did it go?" he whispered to Mistpaw, wondering if she could spot it.

She smiled as Lightningpaw copied her move. It was a great learning experience for him if he hadn't learned the move yet. She saw that the butterfly had flown left into the shadows, at the same time Lightningpaw did. "No, I don't see it." She gently whispered back, slowly going into the shadows.

He waited before going into the shadows. He knew butterflies preferred the sunlight, so hopefully Mistpaw would be able to chase it out more easily than if they both went in. Lightning only hoped Mistpaw was thinking along the same lines. Otherwise, he was just abandoning her on the edge of the den. He mewed softly as a signal of his location.

The butterfly came out of the shadows, and soon after Mistpaw did also. She smiled at Lightningpaw and watched as the butterfly flew towards the fresh-kill pile. "Over there!"

He saw a flash of grey fur as Mistpaw chased it out and smiled. The butterfly was flying higher, and soon it would be impossible to catch. He followed it as far as he could, not wanting to miss what could be the last few minutes of their game. Lightningkit circled the fresh kill pile, not wanting to risk knocking it over. "What do we do now?" he asked. "Wait it out?"

Mistpaw went to one side of the fresh-kill pile and sat down, looking up at the buttterfly. It seemed to be waiting in one spot where they couldn't reach it, that was one smart butterfly. "I guess we could wait it out for awhile. It's up there where we can't reach it."

He nodded, still looking up at it. Mistpaw was right. finally tearing his eyes from it, he sat down next to it. "Till then, let's talk," he suggested. "Butterflies have nothing to do but float. We can't just stare at it forever."
