"Nope!" She said after dropping the trout in the nest, sliding off of the larger cat and falling on her back before scrambling to her paws. "I'm Starlingkit! My brother is Wolfkit. Who are you? Lemme guess.." She began, sitting back in the mossy nest and looking the tom up and down. "Bigspot. No, no... Bigfeet! Largebelly."

His nose twitched as he tried to distinguish Starling's choice of prey from the recent scents of the prey pile. Was that fish? Trout? If it was, then he'd never enjoyed the company of a kitten more.
The elder flopped down in his nest, barely avoiding Starling. "Not quite," he purred. "Maplefrost. Though I'm surprised the former deputy didn't try to give me a different name during my retirement ceremony."

The kit pawed the trout closer to the old coot to take a bite; oh, so she had been far off with his name after all. "Well, why would he? A name change like that after SO many moons! It would just be weird." She said, wiggling her little nose.

Oh, it was trout after all. Maple happily took a bite and chewed for a moment before responding.
"She. The deputy back then was Dustpetal, my daughter. It's the sort of trick I can see her pulling - cats sometimes get their names changed when they become elders anyway. I'm surprised she didn't stick me with Fishbreath or something."

She giggled at that comment, "Well, I'm glad she didn't! Maplefrost is much better." She said, letting the tom eat his fill first. "So, did you and your daughter not get along or something? How come she isn't deputy anymore..did something happen?"

If fish was the only thing he could eat for an entire season… well, he might get a little tired of it by the end, but overall Maple would probably be overjoyed. The other Clans didn't know what they were missing. He tore off another chunk to savor.
"No, we got along well. She left a while ago and I've no idea where she went, but Robinfrost took over afterwards. Disappearances seem to be a common theme among my children."

"Hm..I'm sorry..Where did they all go?" She asked peering up at the elder, before her eyes lit up like she just got the best idea in the world. "I can be your kid!"

He shrugged, then regretted it when his old leg injury gave a twinge. Thanks to Flamingthorn, it didn't cause a constant limp anymore, but it did flare up every so often. Old bones and all that.
"Huh? Oh, I don't know if your real parents will take kindly to an adoption. Who are they?"

"My mom and dad are Petalfur and Ashfrost..but, I haven't even met my dad yet! I haven't seen much of my mother beyond nursing. You can just be my secret dad, like a special agent or something. I like you better anyway!" She said happily. "You can be Wolf's dad too! Wolf would love you absolutely!"

"Heard of Petalfur; she visits sometimes. Not sure about Ashfrost." That'd be one of the disadvantages of being an old hermit; he didn't really know most of the younger cats these days. Also… when had Petalfur become a queen? They needed more Clan meetings, not just for ceremonies, but to share news.
"Your poor mother's going to hate me. Doesn't she spend time with you, at least?"

Starling looked like she was in deep thought after his question. "You mean after being weened?" She asked, "No, I haven't spend any time with her beyond that..that was moons ago." The kit said, peering up at him with a little sad pathetic kitty look.

Jeez. Talk about paws-off parenting. The elder could understand Ashfrost maybe being too busy with duties for visits, but a queen's entire job was to look after her spawn until apprenticeship. Was that really so difficult?
"I guess it wouldn't hurt if you hung around here during the days…"

The kit looked absolutely delighty, "Really?" She asked, brightening up. "You sure she wouldn't mind? Maybe she won't even notice."

"Oh, I'm sure she will mind. But if this is really where you want to be, I doubt she's going to stop you." Maple took one last bite of the delicious fish. Then he nudged the rest towards Starling and raised a paw to groom. Old as he might be, the calico wasn't about to get lazy with his pelt - long fur was a nightmare when not properly cared for.

Starling started eating away at the remains of the fish. Boy, the elder sure did eat a lot.. at least she was just a kit though, so her stomach was still kind of little. When she finished her share she licked her lips and peered up at the elder. "Hmm..can we do something fun?" She asked the tom with bright, pleading eyes. Not that he could see.
